Recovery: Why the time after your workoutis more important than you thinkFor Leslie Brindl, being active is a natural part of life. Leslie, a 48 year old mother of two, works in law

enforcement. Her career and active lifestyle have kept her fit, but even training on her own with swimmingand running, Leslie just could not seem to lose those last few pounds.

I just want to get in better shape, lose the weight and learnbetter ways to do both those things, Leslie said.

With the help of Aaron Johnson, owner and personal trainer atFitness By Design, Leslie has found new ways to challenge herselfand get over the plateau.

According to Aaron, many people struggle with some element of

their fitness and nutrition regimen that holds them back. Aaron saidits like driving with the parking brake on. It can really hamper yourprogress.

A lot of people have an issue they dont notice because its beenpart of their lives forever. As personal trainers, its our job to pointthat out and help you get around it, Aaron said.

For Leslie, rest and recovery have been the major issues.Leslies sporadic sleep patterns and lack of attention to recovery inthe past have held her back. But now, with her focus on recovering

properly, she can release the brakes and get good results.Recovery (the time spent after a workout) is often overlooked as a more insignificant part of the fi tness

regimen. But what you do on your day off-or in the time following a workout-may be even more importa nt than

the workout itself. For Leslie, who has a pretty good level of fitness already, this has definitely proved true.Aaron stresses the major principles of recovery for Leslie: hydration, nutrition, supplementation,

stretching and soft tissue work, refresher work, rest and de-stressing.Recovering properly can mean the difference between extended muscle soreness after a workout and

more comfortable, loose muscles. Leslie has noticed that applying the principles of recovery has lessenedher muscle soreness after workouts.

When I worked out in the past, I never used a trainer, and Ive always been really sore the next two daysafter a workout, Leslie said. With Aaron, I havent had that, though Ive definitely been working hard.

Aaron said that muscle soreness is part of any exercise program, but there are ways to reduce it. Part ofthat is warming up dynamically by starting slowly and increasing your range of motion, easing yourself intoa harder workout.

But even more key to keeping that post-workout soreness

at bay is hydration. This will keep bodily processes-metabolism and regeneration-functioning at optimumcapacity. Hydration is usually one of the biggest brakespeople put on themselves, and its one of the easiestbrakes you can release, Aaron said.

Another important element to recovery is refresher work.The natural reaction to muscle soreness or fatigue after ahard workout is to take i t easy and avoid movement. But notmoving actually makes the soreness worse. Aaronencourages Leslie to stay active in between sessions.

Post-workout nutrition is also a big concern. From myperspective and many other professionals in the fitness

industry, the most important meal of the day is what you eat AFTER your workout. Breakfast is a closesecond, Aaron said. He encourages Leslie to eat a good balance of protein and low-glycemic indexcarbohydrates after her workouts.

Leslie is also trying to make time for a healthy sleep pattern so she can give her body the rest it needs. Byapplying these principles and keeping careful track of everything in her accountability journal, Leslie isgetting the results she wants.

Im seeing weight loss, and different areas are getting firmer. I have a better waistline. Overall,everything just looks better, Leslie said.
