First Cast Despite the not so great weather, this summer has still proven to be a good one on the fishing front. Our club trip to the Whirinaki was a real success, with new leaders Roan and Dave adding their own original spin to the trip format. Having the trip before the club night also worked in our favour, because everyone attending had great fishing (and swimming) stories to share. On our last club night, we had a social gathering and Sausage Sizzle, with the South African sausage (or ‘boerewors’) proving a particular hit. A special thanks must go Chris Young for his relish – what did you put in there, Chris? Although I have heard all sorts of stories about fantastic fish being caught, I’m still waiting on trophy entries. It’s now easier to enter on our website, so get on there and get your names in the running. And don’t forget our greatest asset, The Turangi House and Puniu Hutt (Puniu Hilton), has been empty over the summer months - I look forward to your bookings. On a more serious note, I need to let you know that Bruce Willingale has resigned as Club Secretary. Bruce has been a member of the club since 1988 and has given a great deal of his time and effort over the years. Thank you, Bruce, for all your help. As Bruce’s replacement, we have nominated Paul Sharp. Paul is a real asset to the club and committee, and is making great strides in creating processes to make the committee’s functions simpler – including setting up an emailing system to send out invites for fishing trips and other information. Which reminds me – please can you ensure Paul has your latest email address? The next club trip is to the Puniu, to book your self on the trip email [email protected], I’m sure it will be great learning experience.

The rugby has started too. If Friday’s game has anything to go by we are going to have a great season, we’ll let the Crusaders have that one. Go the Blues!!!

Flytying Classes

Have you ever experience the pleasure of catching a trout on a fly that you have tied?

The club provides a series of fly tying lessons from May to September. The classes are designed for experienced and novice tiers. Many of our members have boosted their fly tying skills as a result of these classes. The classes are kindly conducted and produced by Derek Eustace and Frank Ciochetto.

We are now inviting club members to register, this can be done online or by contacting Derek or Frank (details below)

The classes provide practical sessions with all materials provided. After 1 or 2 lessons you’ll be able to take your “own tied fly” and catch fish (well we all know that there are no guarantees in the fly fishing life!). Many of the flies that we tie, tie in with the monthly club competitions.

The lessons are conducted from Whitehaven Hall, cnr Rangitoto Rd & Dreadon Ave, Papatoetoe, 7.30pm – 10.00pm on the 2nd & 4th Thursday each month May to September inclusive being:- May 10 & 24, June 14 & 28, July 12 & 26, August 9 & 23, & September 13 & 27.

We charge a small fee of $10.00 per person for the series that goes towards the expenses the club incurs. Ideally we should have 10 participants for the classes to proceed.

Interested participants (financial members only) please see me or Frank Ciochetto on March or April club night or phone Derek Eustace 278 6262, or Frank Ciochetto 278 9425, or email me [email protected]

Riffles – Swap Box

At the next club meeting there will be a ‘SWAP BOX’ for any bits and pieces that you don’t want – and maybe you might find something of use to

you too!Selwyn Hodder and Ian Rodger will co-ordinate this

for as long as it seems useful.See you using it at the next meeting.

12 March 2012 Club night Speaker

Kiyoshi Nakagawa

Yoshi, as he is popularly known, is a dedicated fly fisherman, having fished Japanese, American and New Zealand waters for more than 15 years with a fly rod. He has successfully competed at every level, and was New Zealand National Flyfishing Champion in 2010. He graduated from one of the top Boatbuilding and Design schools in the USA, his studies only interrupted by frequent fishing trips, targeting striped bass and various species of trout. Yoshi's speciality is wooden boats, fusing traditional Japanese boatbuilding knowledge with the latest high-tech techniques. In addition to fishing and boatbuilding, Yoshi is a passionate sailing enthusiast, having sailed and raced for 15 years.

Yoshi co- organised the 2006 National Championship Venue with Peter Scott and Steve Brown, and was also one of the organisers for the 2008 World Championships in New Zealand. He is a fly tying instructor for Umpqua, and was official fly tier for the New Zealand national team competing in previous Oceania and World Championships. He is one of 30 contributors of "New Zealand’s Best Trout Flies”, and is mostly found standing waist-deep in any fast-flowing river, short-lining his favourite dry fly/nymph combo in search of his next trout.

We look forward to Yoshi talk on all different types Fly tying materials and I’m sure we will all absorb his wealth of knowledge… I’m keen to watch him tie a fly on the big screen.

Regards Brian Young - President

Puniu Trip

Hi All,

As you would have seen on this years trip calendar the March trip is a beginners specific training trip aimed at teaching and improving a new/beginner anglers very basic fly fishing skills. The trip will be held collectively on the Puniu and Mangatutu rivers where we will focus on casting, fishing techniques and where you are most likely to find fish.We will cover the very basics of Dry Fly, Dry Fly Nymph Combo, Wet Lining and even Czech Nymphing.

We will have space for a maximum of 10 Beginner anglers on this trip to join the 5 experienced anglers who will be showing you the ropes. This is a very good and effective way to learn and pick up handy tips that you will use on the river for many more years to come.

When & Where:

The trip will take place on the weekend of 9, 10 & 11 March on the Puniu and Mangatutu rivers. These are two excellent rivers which offers anglers the opportunity to hook into both rainbow and Brown trout. The Puniu rises in the Pureora Forest in the central Waikato and flows over open farmland and bush country to join the Waipa River near the small town of Pirongia, near Te Awamutu. The Mangatutu is one of my personal favorites and offers, but is not limited to, some of the best Dry Fly fishing the Waikato has to offer. We will ALL be staying at Bryce’s Rock Climbing which is situated at 1424 Owairaka Valley Roada and is a short drive from both rivers.

What to Bring:

Well other than the obvious fishing gear you will need to bring along your own bedding or a sleeping bag. I would also like to encourage any fly tiers to bring along your vice for some evening entertainment and pattern swapping.

Meals:

We will be providing you with breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday morning as well as supper on the Saturday night. Each angler will need to provide his/her own supper for the Friday night as well as lunches for the other two days. Please feel free to bring along any snacks or refreshments such as coffee or you favorite brew.

Cost and Bookings:

The cost for this trip will be $105 per person and includes meals and sharing accommodation. Please send your booking confirmation to [email protected]. Payment is to be made by direct transfer to BNZ Account # 02-1263-0007778-083. Please ensure that you include your name and Puniu as a reference.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you on this trip.

Roan & Dave

Whirinaki Club Trip Report

Aniwhenua Lodge tomorrow to fish the Whirinaki River.

Clock watching all night, finally 5am with nervous excitement I’m off on my first AFAC fishing trip.

‘I travel light’ I had put in the email. I take a few things out put a lot more in. It’s dark when we arrive at Paul’s, I hope he doesn’t notice how much stuff I have, he has kindly offered me a lift down; he must be wondering what sort of idiot he’s getting stuck with, poo boy he’ll soon find out! We pick up Philip and stop at Matatmata McCafe for speed breakfast take a way.

Reaching our destination (Lake Aniwhenua Lodge Motel) and lovely wee cabin for me (about mid-morning), we quickly get organised; then it’s off to the lake FISHING. Paul arranged for Brian, Chris and Attie to take care of me for the late afternoon shift and would not leave me until they had arrived. We started fishing on the jetty then the local Waka group arrived to practice paddling, they were nicely tethered to the jetty where we were fishing so it was great for surfing, not so good for what we were doing. Paul then hops into his Kayak and fishes close by. So I moved down the lake edge while Paul paddles up and down the lake in his kayak minding me.

Brian Chris Attie arrive in good time and whisk me away to go river fishing. We walk up to where the guys believe it is fishable; but it all looks ok to me.

Watch your rod on the electric fence, says Chris, zap too late. Now you tell me to hold the cork bit. Chris is stuck with the newbie must have drawn the short straw; he looks at the flies I am so proud of with disinterest and gives me new ones. A floating thing and a little fly, I start casting madly (well swing my line in the air), catching trees, Chris’s hat and my back.... Chris tells me about casting ‘make a p he says, or is it a d or b or B no mention of whether its capitals hummm’.

We keep moving up the river Chris trying to keep me from falling in, I’m in all the wrong gear, but I have river bashed before, but not trying to stay dry the object of that is to get wet, and not carrying a rod. We climb a bank my rod is caught in trees and I lose Chris’s fly, he gives me another, the blackberries are delicious.

We catch up to Brian and Attie and continue to fish on until we can’t go any further; Chris kindly fishes me from the water as I float toward him. At that time they kindly present me with my own stick.

Back at camp we debrief and have dinner, everyone is very nice and I feel like I’ve known them for years. Fly tying demo’s after tea, I’m going to have to get into that.

At Saturday’s breakfast meeting we are put in groups and given bits of river, Dave and Hugh kindly offer to take me. We park at our nominated spot and walk to the river, horse’s, big scary things with teeth, I nearly jumped on Dave’s shoulders. Poor Dave, at the river I learnt I was nymphing and again p’s or

Page 8: AUCKLAND FRESHWATER ANGLERS CLUB INC · • General inquiries to: The Secretary, Auckland Freshwater Anglers Club, PO Box 63016, Manukau City 2241. Ph 278 1528 Classified Ads

b’s d’s were mentioned, I was told look at the water and see the fish, I nodded yes but I didn’t see them, casting and mending and watching the floating thing and don’t let the line drag flick over there and back this way and the fish over there, tangles and moving up the river slipping and sliding only fell half way 3 times, being in all the wrong gear, flies that don’t rate a mention, and I was so proud of them.

Dave saw a big fish and tried so hard to get me to catch it, or catch anything. Hugh was my minder for the afternoon, I think they thought if they let me out of there sight I’d drown, probably would have! I didn’t get a fish although I had some bites.

Lovely dinner that night, although I’d imagined I’d be eating freshly caught trout all weekend, I had joked on Thursday night when we were having fish for tea that I would be eating Trout all weekend.

I dreamt of fishing that night and for some strange reason my Mother’s false teeth, hummm. Sunday cooked breakfast Brian J was stuck with me today. We were off the same part of the river we fished yesterday apparently it was the best bit. We avoided the horse part. At the river I walk ahead as Brian had to do his fly and the minute I was by the water, a fish

Ngongotaha UpdatePeter, Here's a couple of pictures from a recent trip to the Ngongotaha River. Please feel free to use them in the riffles. I caught the 12 pound brown czech nymphing. Please give Kiyoshi Nakagawa credit for the pictures. Thank you,Dave Smith

I cast a letter, Capital D I had decided, and the fish went for it, but I was too slow, then everything came flooding back. I’d seen Dave crouch so I crouched and cast in the spot that he’d told me to look for, and Walla I got one, I let him go then foul hook one in the back a big one, let him go, and the rest of the day was the same in the end I was thinking jolly fish I don’t get to practice my alphabet. One fish took my, well Dave’s hook. Lots of falling in, but just onto my hands and knees I was perfecting the slipping at least. I had no net, and getting the hooks out was hard. Wanting to take one home I had to hit his head with a rock, that was horrible, but I’m a fisherman now and that’s what we do.

I can’t wait for the next trip.

Rotorua report courtesy of Bert Robinson

So long summer, roll on winter! One can only hope that this winter’s fishing will be a lot better than last and certainly better than what we experienced this summer. With a definite lack of continuous sunny days none of the lakes have reached temperatures that forced fish into deeper water or to the nearest spring inflow The positive side is that the smaller lakes have been cool enough to produce fish throughout the summer. This could also bring spawning fish a little earlier, especially as there has been plenty of food for them in the various lakes around the region. A slight change in spawning patterns over the past few years will also help anglers as there have been both early and late season spawning rainbows appearing in larger numbers. Hauparu Bay on Lake Rotoiti is one popular fishing spot that has had spawning fish coming in during March, more often than not.

Lake Okaro has produced some awesome fish over the past few weeks which is somewhat unusual for this time of the year and while most have been caught while fishing from the shore, a reasonable number have been caught from boats.

Lake Ngapouri has also kept anglers busy from time to time and even fishing from the boat ramp area has been reasonably successful, with black or olive woolly buggers taking fish. Check out the small inflow at the right-hand end of the lake as viewed from the boat ramp as fish often congregate there for cooler water as well as spawning later in the year.

Lake Rerewhakaaitu still has a very high water level, making for difficult access but those who are more adventurous have caught some great fish at times. Harling and trolling have also been very successful for some.

Fishing a cicada on the Rangitaiki River has been nothing short of spectacular as fish rise freely to one’s offering. Most of the better fishing has been in the river between lakes Aniwhenua and Matahina, though around Murupara has been fairly good too.The Whirinaki is also fishing well to cicada patterns

though if nothing comes up for your fly try going through the run or riffle with a double nymph rig just in case.

Most anglers seem to be fishing the Hamurana mouth, rather than the Awahou, though there has been very mixed results there. The water temperature below 18 metres stubbornly refuses to get above 20 degrees so fish are not really being driven out of the depths of this lake. Add fickle winds to the equation and you get a large pool of 10 or 12 degree water that keeps most rainbows well out in the lake. Brown trout, on the other hand, seem to enjoy cooler water and can be found in close to the stream mouth and in the bay to the left of the stream mouth. The next strong southerly should put an end to any thought of fishing coming in large numbers even though the lake temperature is continuing to climb by a few points of a degree. The Ngongotaha has been almost devoid of fish in the middle reaches, those that are there are around the 750 gram mark and full of fight. As we get into the month of March there should be an increase in numbers of rainbow trout coming into this stream to spawn.

A few fish can be found in the more open areas at the upper Waiteti Stream, though most are in almost inaccessible parts of the stream. There are still a number of brown trout holding in the stream but, as usual for this time of the year, there are more rainbows, some of which are around the three to four kilo mark.

Get strain in the membrane

Side strain as well as being the sudden onset of pain and point tenderness over the rib cage, is also an excellent technique for playing a fish. As a medical condition it is an uncommon injury, more associated with elite athletes, javelin throwing, ice hokey and motor sport. But for us flyfishers, sidestrain can be the saving grace when it comes to wild NZ trout. One reference to this technique I found recently was in Brian Furzer’s book Trout Fishing (1988). This book is new to the club library, donated by Jim Foord’s family. In this book it outlines the following advice on ‘side strain’:

• If a trout thrashes on the surface whilst hooked, apply side strain.

• If a trout is looking as if it will run a long distance, apply sidestrain.

• If it has taken a lot of line already, walk along the bank to increase the effectiveness of the sidestrain.

• If a trout has its head down whilst being fairly well under the rod tip, apply sidestrain to turn its head in a different direction.

• If a trout leaps from the water, give it an amount of slack immediately, and when the line tightens again apply sidestrain to keep it down in the water.

(source: Trout Fishing by Brian Furser)

The advantage of this technique stacks up pretty well as something to do all of the time. By exerting sidestrain you throw the fish off balance in changing the direction of the rod-tip and lowering the rod to reduce the rod angle away from the fish, making the fish work harder to take line.

This technique keeps the fish below the surface, decreases hook tears caused by direct upwards rod angles, gets the fish in quick (so it can be released in a lively state) and can halt the fish’s run towards snags.

All but the largest fish can be subdued using this technique. The key is to keep the pressure on, making the fish deviate from the direction it wants to run with your rod bent horizontal, parallel to the water surface. There is no need for brute force, the rod will do the work. Keep in mind that it is unsporting to use tackle which would enable an angler to simply haul a fish from the water.

To maximize this technique you can also sidestrike. Literally hooking the fish hard at the angle in which you would apply the sidestrain. This puts the fish off balance straight away and can mean the difference in landing a fish or not - especially in tight situations, in small streams, full of debris, or with very feisty fresh run fish.

In streams like the Ngongotaha in Rotorua where the stream is full of obstacles, and there may be a whole school of fish within each prime lie the sidestrike and sidestain technique can be deadly. By carefully planning your routine for playing and landing fish, you can theoretically catch the entire school and pick them off one at a time. Sidestrain can prevent the fish running up stream and scaring the school. Just remember that once each fish is revived to let them go down stream so they don’t swim back up and tell the others that you’re coming. One common occurrence is that once you have worked through a number of the smaller fish at the back you get to the monster at the front, the stream will suddenly erupt and all the side striking and side staining that you have practiced on the smaller fish will come to good effect and will count.

LegaSeaBringing Back the Bite

At our last meeting we were fortunate in hearing from Trish Rea who is promoting a new venture called LegaSea - Bring on the Bite. (Love that name!) Trish Rea has been advocating for non-commercial fishing & environmental interests for more than a decade. She has gained a broad insight into how the fisheries management regime operates and is keen to have the system operate to benefit all New Zealander's interests. She is very much involved in Option4 and the very successful Kawhai Legal Challenge that went to the High Court in the interests of the recreational fisher that many of you will have heard of. While the thrust is directed to sea-fishing, there are many common denominators of interest to the freshwater anglers. And what is LegaSea – what are their aims and objectives on behalf of the recreational angler?

LegaSea is a new and dynamic way to make sure that the Vision of “more fish in the water & a healthy marine environment” isn’t just a vision – but a REALITY. Given half a chance most Kiwis want to invest in this Vision – we are all islanders and abundant fisheries and healthy marine environments contribute to our wellbeing. It’s something that we all have in

common.

So the purpose of LegaSea is to make sure that the hard stuff that is needed to make the Vision a reality doesn’t rely on the generosity of just a few deep pockets.

If we each give a little - $20 bucks – then together we are able to collectively make a massive difference.

And isn’t that just the perfectly simple, no.8 wire approach to solving the problem?

We think so.

May I suggest that you look at their website http://www.legasea.co.nz/ to get a good idea of what they are doing – and indeed what many of the participants have done over many years. ALL donations to this great cause will be appreciated and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to drop Trish a line (no pun intended!) or give her a call. Her contact details are: email [email protected]; phone 0800 Legasea (0800 534 2732) or 0274 175 121.

National Trout Centre

Peter

Thanks to club member Sam Bourne for setting up the logo, we are vividly featured on the very excellent fundraising wall at the National Trout Centre at Turangi – see pictures below. The Trout Centre has gone from strength to strength and is a very worthwhile visit. The new Freshwater Aquarium (in co-operation with the power company GENESIS) has been very well done and you will see there native fish that many people have not ever seen. The historical story of fishing for trout in the New Zealand is very well told indeed and of course being there in time for a ‘Kids fish out Day’ is quite something again. Have a look at their website – www.troutcentre.com and make a point of calling in, it’s great.

8lb Browns on the TongariroWe heard from Ian Rodger at the February Club night that the Brown trout are feeding on Rainbows in the Tongariro. As the rainbows spawning runs are later it seems the brownies are taking advantage. My mate Tom Laurneson from the Shetland Islands comes to NZ most years to fish the South Island and North Island. I met Tom in Rotorua a couple of years back. Tom’s a family friend, he’s my father’s best mate from school’s, sister’s husband, anyway we both like fly fishing so get along pretty well. I keep Tom posted throughout the year on what’s been happening here, and we discuss sea trout in Shetland. We have kept in contact since, and he sent me a couple of photos recently worthy of sharing. Heather MacDonald from Turangi snapped a picture of one of Tom’s many Brownies. Cheers Sam

NewZealandFederationofFreshwaterAnglers(inc)Notice of Annual General Meeting and Plenary Session.

May I take this opportunity to invite as many of you, our membership, to our AGM and Plenary Session being held in Dunedin on the weekend of 28th & 29th April 2012.The theme of this year AGM and Plenary Session is:

PUBLIC ACCESS TO AND THE EXCLUSIVE CAPTURE OF OUR GREAT NEW ZEALAND FRESHWATER FISHERY

The issue of Exclusive Capture and ‘Access’ to recreational fishing water is of real concern at the moment. There seems to be increased pressure from commercial operators and private landowners to have “ private exclusive” arrangements and “ paid” access to our public waters... This is totally against the intent of the early settlers who wanted to escape the private fishing water such as in the United Kingdom and make NZ an example of every person’s right, with a licence, to fish all the available freshwater in NZ. Consequently, there is a tension between our draconian privacy laws and the legislation originally enacted to protect our right to fish freshwater. These things and the import of the Walking Access legislation in ensuring continued public access to rivers and lakes will be discussed at our AGM. There are also many other TOPICs of interest and concern to Freshwater Anglers I am sure that you will agree that while we are most concerned about the quality of the fishery, we have a wider interest than ‘just the fishing’. Issues such as the abstraction of larger and larger volumes of water for irrigation together with the contamination bought about by the increased livestock numbers, to the very ‘ownership’ of the water (‘Tradeable water rights’) are of concern to us too. Other Items which will be discussed include;- Water Quality & the increasing influence of intensive agricultureContinued pressure to introduce Trout farmingTradeable Water RightsWater Conservation Orders - sacrosanct or not?Hydro power and Gas Extraction and its demand for water - Alternative sources of PowerCanterbury, Otago and Southland water- The Management of its fisheries and the Dairy influence Please attend and contribute! For this reason it is most important that we hear from you, our membership, and your clubs, OF THE ISSUES THAT ARE OF CONCERN TO YOU. This is MOST important. Please take this opportunity and send in YOUR REMITS individually or as your club (see form attached) in good time for the AGM. (Send by mail – or by email - and on the subject of EMAIL we do want your email addresses. Communication is very important to us – both ways.)We look forward to seeing you at the AGM – or hearing from you beforehandJim Hale, President, NZFFAEmail: [email protected] Phone (06) 357 1569; mobile 027 3097500 Ken Sims, Acting PresidentEmail : [email protected] Phone (06) 3569402: mobile 021 391639Selwyn Hodder, Secretary Email; [email protected] Phone 09 5763459 :mobile 027 4470836
