TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

THEORY CLASSES:

I have taken theory classes for B. Pharmacy (Final Year) students for 3 years

during the academic years 2003-2006 in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences,

Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. I taught Pharmaceutical and Medicinal properties on

the chemistry of Bio-molecules like Steroids, Alkaloids, Vitamins and Nucleic acids.

Previously I have taken theory classes for the M. Sc. Biotechnology first year students

during the academic year 2002-2003 in the Department of Biotechnology, Andhra

University, Visakhapatnam. I have taught topics such as Chemistry of Carbohydrates,

Lipids, Vitamins and Metabolism of Carbohydrates and Lipids. In the year 2006, I was

appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Andhra University,

Visakhapatnam, India. I have promoted as Assistant Professor (Senior scale) through

CAS in the year 2007. I have worked as the Principal Investigator during the years 2006-

2009 in the same department under the Women Scientists scheme on the project entitled

“Development of New Drug Molecules from Terrestrial Medicinal Plants – Isolation,

Chemical and Biological studies”.

LABORATORY INSTRUCTION:

During 2003-2006, I have conducted M.Pharm (Pharmaceutical Chemistry)

practical work involving Extraction, Isolation and Identification of Natural Products.

Previously I have supervised M. Sc. Previous students of Organic Chemistry in their

practical classes during the academic years 1993-2002 in the Department of Organic

Chemistry, Foods, Drugs & Water, School of Chemistry, Andhra University,

Visakhapatnam. From 2006 onwards, I am conducting practical work for Postgraduate

students of Biochemistry.

OTHER EXPERIENCE:

a) CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES :

Experience in the application of all chromatographic techniques like column, TLC, VCC, Ion-exchange, Gel filtration, GC, GC-MS, MPLC and HPLC, UV-Vis and IR spectrometry.

b) SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES:

Experience in the application of 1D (1H, 13C, DEPT) and 2D (1H-1H, 1H-13C COSY, HMBC, NOESY) NMR, Mass (EI, CI, FAB and MALDI-TOF) data in structure elucidation of bioactive compounds.

RESEARCH QUALIFICATION:

After getting qualified in the NET (Joint CSIR-UGC) examination in the year

1992 in Life Sciences conducted by Joint CSIR-UGC, New Delhi, India. I have worked

as JRF (CSIR) in the Department of Organic Chemistry, Foods, Drugs & Water, School

of Chemistry, Andhra University. During this Period, I have carried out isolation,

purification and structural elucidation studies of Marine Natural Products from two soft

corals. The work resulted in the publication of a research paper in Indian Journal of

Chemistry. Based on the progress of the earlier work SRF (CSIR) was awarded in the

same department. During this period I have carried out work on number of sponges and

soft corals and could publish three papers as a result.

I have continued research work even after Doctorate degree as the Council of

Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, India awarded Research Associate

(RA) Fellowship in the year 1997. My research work continued in the same department

till the fellowship was over by February 2003. Then I was awarded Senior Research

Associate (SRA) Fellowship by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)

under Scientists’ Pool Scheme, New Delhi, Government of India in 2002. I have joined in

the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Andhra University in March 2003 and

continued research till March, 2006. So far, I have published 34 research papers and

review articles on terrestrial plants and marine organisms. Later I was awarded

fellowship under the Women Scientists’ Scheme (WOS-A) of Department of Science &

Technology (DST), New Delhi, Government of India for three years (2006-2009). The

research work was carried out in the Department of Biochemistry, Andhra University,

Visakhapatnam as the Principal Investigator on the project entitled “Development of new

drug molecules from Terrestrial Medicinal Plants-Isolation, Chemical and Biological

studies”. Recently UGC funded Major Research Project entitled “Delivery of Natural

Products in the form of Nanomaterial” has been sanctioned by UGC, New Delhi, India

for three years (2013-2017).

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

1. BIOACTIVE SECONDARY METABOLITES OF MARINE ORGANISMS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN AND TERRESTRIAL MEDICINAL PLANTS:

I have thirteen years of experience in the collection, isolation and structure

elucidation of natural products from marine fauna (Soft corals, Sponges and Sea

cucumbers) of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of the Indian Ocean, employing various

chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. I have isolated large number of

ceramides, cerebrosides, diterpenoids, norditerpenes, polar lipid glycosides and various

polyoxygenated sterols and their glycosides from different species of soft corals, sponges

and sea cucumbers. I have also done anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and cardiotonic

studies on some of these compounds obtained in high yield and got significant anti-

microbial and anti-inflammatory activities. Some of the compounds were also tested for

anti-diabetic and analgesic activities. Later isolated a large number of flavonoids,

diterpenoids and polyphenols from medicinal plant, Andrographis paniculata.
