    2150. AUSTRALIA: George V, 1910-1936, AE halfpenny, 1923(m),KM-22, key date for the series, a lovely example! PCGS graded EF40, R $500 - 700

Mintage of 1,113,000 is reported for the half penny in 1923, butbecause the great majority were struck from the dies dated 1922,

only a minute percentage were actually dated 1923.

A Key Date 1930(m) Australian Penny

    2151. AUSTRALIA: George V, 1910-1936, AE penny, 1930(m), KM-23,obverse 2 ‘Indian’ die, reverse A ‘London’ die, key date for theseries, PCGS graded VF35, RRR $8,000 - 10,000

Obverse 2 is the ‘Indian’ die, easily identified by the last stroke ofthe N of OMN pointing to a border bead. This penny obverse diewas used at the Calcutta, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth mints.

There are 178 border beads. Reverse A is the ‘London’ die, and can be distinguished by the relative position of the letters ‘ALIA’ ofAUSTRALIA with border beads, with the tops of the letters AL

aligned with and IA between beads.

The most likely explanation as to how this rare overdate wasproduced is by hand-stamping a numeral 2 onto one of the seven1921 reverse dies in stock in mid-January 1922 at the Melbourne

Mint, perhaps as an experiment to test the possibility of using someof the newly-pressed but obsolete reverse dies. Approximately 800specimens are thought to exist and thus one of the great rarities in

    Australian numismatics.

Al-Hakam b. ‘Awana is recorded by al-Baladhuri as governor of Sind at the end of the Umayyad period, apparently appointed by the

eastern governor Khalid b. ‘Abd Allah al-Qasri to fight in Sind for the Umayyads in 112, though his coins may have been produced for

several years thereafter. This piece differs from the examples soldin Stephen Album Auction 28, Lot 2122 (for $1400) and in Morton &Eden Auction 89, Lot 27 (for the equivalent of $1193) as in containsthe 2nd rather than the 1st half of the kalima, the reverse legend is

the same but slightly differently arranged, and both the style &weight suggest a dfferent mint.
