Audi's sporting heritage was highlighted

at Geneva with a display that showcased

innovative design and impressive efficiency.

New Audi TT

The iconic shape of the original 1998 TT

sports car is echoed in the design of the

all-new TT (pictured above).

About the same size as its predecessor,

the new TT uses weight-saving steel and

aluminium with pioneering technology that's

to the fore in the all-digital Audi virtual

cockpit and minimalist interior detailing.

Engine choice comprises a 2.0 TFSI unit

available with two outputs, a 230PS version

for the TT and a 310PS unit for the TTS, both

using a heavily revised quattro system and a

six-speed S tronic transmission.

Of key interest is the highly efficient

2.0 TDI 184PS engine with six-speed

manual gearbox driving the front wheels.

Delivering a 0-62mph time of 7.2secs*

and a 146mph* maximum, the 2.0 TDI

is capable of up to 67.2mpg* on the

combined cycle, and CO2 emissions of an

unprecedented 110g/km*.

First deliveries are expected in late

2014, with prices still to be confirmed.

Audi S1 and S1 Sportback quattro

With a 231PS 2.0 TFSI engine and quattro

all-wheel-drive, the S1 and S1 Sportback

quattro (right) establish a new subcompact

sector in Audi’s renowned ‘S’ range.

0-62mph in just 5.8secs belies combined

fuel consumption of up to 40.3mpg and CO2

emissions from 162g/km.

Inside, ‘S’-model grey dials go with

a three-spoke flat-bottomed ‘S’ multi-

function leather steering wheel, Sports

seats in Milano leather/Olympic cloth, full

climate control, a six-speaker CD radio with

6.5˝ retractable colour display, Bluetooth®

interface and Driver’s Information System.

Available to order now, S1 prices start

from £24,900 OTR.*Preliminary data subject to confirmation

Sensational all-new Audi TT redefines an icon and heads sporting theme at Geneva

The Geneva Motor Show always means an exciting time of the year for us here at Audi, and with the reveal of the exciting new Audi TT, 2014 is another landmark.

It’s some 16 years since the original TT made its debut, and the all-new TT pays homage to that iconic design with technology that’s true to its origins as a truly practical sports car.

In fact, so advanced is the engineering under that sleek skin that the new TT 2.0 TDI will, despite its sporting character, be one of the cleanest models in the Audi range, with CO2 emissions from just 110g/km and combined fuel consumption of up to 67.2mpg.

Of course, such efficiency in our newest models sets a precedent for the others in our range, and we are delighted to be able to share with you the introduction of our new Audi ultra technology.

Audi ultra means reduced CO2 and improved fuel consumption. And with A4, A5 Coupé and A6 ultra models all offering significant BIK tax savings as well as reduced operating costs compared with the previous models, that’s a benefit to everyone.

Turn to page 8 to read all about it.

Audi wins through in FN50 reliability survey

A3 Saloon takes top What Car? award

Audi is the UK’s most reliable manufacturer

according to the 2013 FN50 reliability survey,

which has gauged the opinion of over 600,000

company car drivers served by the country’s top

50 leasing companies.

The FN50 survey, commissioned annually

by specialist fleet publication Fleet News, is

the nation’s largest poll of vehicle reliability. It

asks participants from the top 50 (by fleet size)

leasing companies to rank the best vehicles and

manufacturers for reliability, and then filters

each category into a Top 10.

Two Audi models – the A3 and A4 Saloon and

Avant – appear in the Most Reliable Cars Top 10,

the A3 ascending from seventh position in 2012

to fifth in 2013 and the A4 from third to second

place. The A1, Q3 and TT sports car also climbed

the rankings in the results, helping to secure

Audi’s dominant overall position.

“The holy grail is to achieve the lowest possible

tax and fuel bills without compromising the

sense of luxury and abundant performance”.

So said What Car? magazine in its editorial

introducing the Executive car class of the 2014

Car of the Year Awards.

It's fitting, then, that the Audi A3 Saloon

2.0 TDI Sport was the overall winner. Company

car tax of just £69 a month for a 20% tax

payer in 2014/15, or £138 for a 40% tax payer,

disguises the fact that the A3 Saloon’s punchy

150PS 2.0 TDI engine can power it to 62mph in

just 8.7secs yet emit just 107g/km of CO2 and

achieve 68.9mpg on the combined cycle.

That sense of luxury is fulfilled by a standard

equipment list that includes 17˝ alloy wheels,

dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth® interface,

an eight-speaker radio/CD player with a 5.8˝

retractable colour screen and DAB digital radio

reception, front sports seats and a three-spoke

leather sports multi-function steering wheel.

P11D prices for the A3 Saloon range start at

£22,770 for the Sport 1.4 TFSI 140PS manual.

Audi named ‘Franchise of the Year’ by AM, while Experteye rewards ‘Best Fleet Dealer Network’

New Audi Smart Display tablet opens up networking possibilities for in-car use

“Consistent investment in its product

portfolio, which now stands at 49 models, and

an unswerving focus on delivering an excellent

customer experience”, was how AM magazine

described Audi UK, which has been named

‘Franchise of the Year’ in the 2014 AM Awards.

Furthermore, the AM citation went on to

say: “...disciplined management of its brand

image and systematic execution of its sales

plans across all market channels ensured it

achieved this great result without overheating

any individual model segment”.

Audi Regional Network Development

Manager, Stuart Clarkson (above, centre),

collected the trophy on behalf of Audi UK from

AM Awards event host, Sophie Raworth, and

Rupert Keane of award sponsors, the RAC.

Top award for Audi from Experteye

Meanwhile, Audi UK also took the award for

‘Best Fleet Dealer Network (Sales) 2014’

from Experteye, the contract hire and leasing

industry research specialist.

A new portable tablet designed by Audi could

open up a wealth of new possibilities for

networking between the car and the internet.

The Audi Smart Display, shown in prototype

form at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las

Vegas, combines the latest consumer electronics

technology with the robustness and reliability of

a component designed for automotive use.

With a 10.2˝ full-HD display encased in

brushed aluminium, the portable tablet can

facilitate access to, and operation of, the car’s

infotainment system, but its capabilities extend

far beyond this.

Through a secure and stable Wireless Local

Area Network (WLAN) interface, and via the

familiar Android operating system, the Smart

Display can connect with the car and enrich

it with the state-of-the-art computing and

graphics power of its Nvidia Tegra 40 processor.

Passengers in the front or rear seats can use

the touchscreen to enjoy access to the internet

and control the radio, media and navigation

systems via the Audi connect system.

The award is based on feedback drawn

from Touchpoint, Experteye’s driver

satisfaction survey, in which 6,000 drivers of

leased vehicles nominated Audi for providing

the best service to fleet drivers in the ordering

and delivery of vehicles during 2013.

The survey requests driver feedback after

key events including vehicle delivery, servicing,

tyre replacement, windscreen and glass repair/

replacement, accident follow-up and vehicle

breakdown.

Rick Yarrow, managing director at

Experteye, said: “I’m delighted to present this

award to Audi, a tough category to win because

it is based purely on direct driver feedback

taken immediately after delivery of their new

vehicle when the service experience is fresh

in their minds.”

The Smart Display tablet can access more

than 950,000 apps, plus movies, music, audio

books and eBooks through Google Play, the

Android app store, and it can also receive video

from the car’s MMI navigation plus system.

The Smart Display plays through the Audi

sound system, while headphones can also

be connected via Bluetooth® or a standard

headphone jack. The Smart Display also

supports NFC (near field communication)

technology, enabling it to connect to Bluetooth®

headphones and mobile devices in general.

Page 4: Audi ultra: efficiency without the compromise New Audi TT heads

Audi contests this year’s World Endurance

Championship, and especially the Le Mans 24hrs

epic on 14-15 June, with a new challenge for the

R18 e-tron quattro race car (pictured above), as

both key competitor manufacturers – Toyota and

Porsche – adopt four-wheel drive for their LMP1

prototype contenders.

The move follows the trend started by Audi

in 2012, when it won Le Mans and the World

Endurance Championship outright with the first

R18 e-tron quattro.

Up to now, the use of four-wheel drive has

been permitted only above 120km/h (75mph).

For 2014, this speed-related rule is withdrawn,

and four driven wheels promise to deliver

significant traction advantages, particularly

at low speeds, for instance when the driver

accelerates on exiting a tight corner.

The 2014 R18 e-tron quattro will make its

race debut at the first round of the 2014 World

Endurance Championship at the Silverstone Six

Hours race on April 20. Find out more by visiting

S3 tops award-winning A3 Cabriolet range

Silverstone debut for 2014 R18 e-tron quattro

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet has already been

named What Car? magazine’s ‘Best open-top

car 2014’. Now, the first-ever S3 Cabriolet is set

to join the range, with first deliveries expected

to commence from July.

Immediately recognisable by its stylish 19˝

‘5-twin-spoke star’ design anthracite partly

polished alloy wheels, distinctive edged sill

trim and aluminium-look windscreen frame

and door mirror housings, the S3 Cabriolet also

comes with Xenon plus headlights with LED tail

lights. A subtle bootlid spoiler complements

the redesigned front and rear bumpers, and,

as with all Audi ‘S’ models, four tailpipes add a

purposeful touch at the rear.

Power comes from the 2.0 TFSI 300PS

engine as fitted to the S3 Hatch, Sportback and

Saloon, with quattro all-wheel-drive and a six-

speed S tronic transmission as standard.

Combined fuel consumption of 39.8mpg

and CO2 emissions of 165g/km belie the S3

Cabriolet's 0-62mph time of just 5.4secs and

top speed of 155mph, where conditions permit.

Infrastructure boost for electric recharging

The government has committed an extra

£9 million to boost the vehicle charging

infrastructure in the UK.

The scheme, called Go Ultra Low, promises

to open up the appeal of both plug-in hybrids,

such as the new Audi A3 Sportback e-tron (see

page 12), and pure electric cars.

In particular, £5.8 million has been

earmarked to increase the number of rapid

charging points, which can recharge a pure

electric vehicle to 80% capacity in 30 minutes.

There are currently more electric charging

points in London than there are filling stations,

according to the Department for Transport.

Speaking at the launch of the scheme,

Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg (above), said:

“This campaign is about opening people’s eyes

to the advantages of ultra low emission vehicles.

Government grants already knock thousands

of pounds off the price tag, which is great news

for the consumer, and means the UK is well-

positioned to take the lead on the development

of these advanced technologies.”

Budget 2014 in brief Benefit-in-Kind tax //

BIK tax bands for 2014/15 to 2017/18 are shown in the table (below). The current BIK tax rate of 5% (8% for diesels) for cars with CO2 emissions of 1-75g/km changes in April 2015, when it will apply to cars with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/km. Cars with CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km will be charged at 9% (12% for diesels). In April 2016, the 3% charge for diesel cars is removed but the lowest tax rate rises to 7% for cars with CO2 emissions of 0-50g/km, and 11% for cars with CO2 emissions of 51-75g/km.

Vehicle Excise Duty //

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates rose in line with the Retail Price Index in 2014/15. Cars with CO2 emissions of 130g/km are exempt from the first-year rate, and cars with CO2 emissions of up to 100g/km are exempt from VED entirely.

Class 1A NIC and fuel allowances //Class 1A National Insurance, payable in 2014/15 by employers on benefits including company cars and ‘free’ fuel provided for private use, remain as for 2013/14 at 13.8% of taxable value. The car fuel benefit charge, for calculating ‘free’ fuel for private use in a company car, rises from £21,100 to £21,700 on 1 April 2014.

What is Audi ultra?Audi ultra uses the most advanced and efficient technology available to deliver the lowest CO2 emissions and best fuel economy in each model range.

Audi ultra means exceptionally competitive cost-of-ownership figures, reduced Benefit-in-Kind tax and fuel bills, and reflects Audi’s commitment to sustainability.

Initially available in the A4 Saloon and Avant, A5 Coupé and A6 Saloon and Avant ranges, with more models to come, Audi ultra offers efficiency without compromise.

Here we look at the technology and benefits of Audi ultra in the core Audi fleet range and see how they compare with key competitors.

With no price increase over the outgoing 2.0 TDI

177PS predecessors, the A6 Saloon and Avant

spearhead the introduction of Audi ultra technology.

With maximum power increased to 190PS, CO2

emissions as low as 114g/km and combined fuel

consumption of up to 64.2mpg, the new A6 ultra

offers exceptional cost-effectiveness, reduced

BIK tax liabilities for company car drivers and no

restriction on standard or optional equipment

availability.

CO2 from 114g/km offers major BIK tax savings

The new Audi A6 ultra models are powered by a

highly efficient EU6 emission-standard four-cylinder

2.0 TDI 190PS engine, and are available initially

with a seven-speed S tronic transmission.

Six-speed manual transmission models will join

the range later in 2014.

Efficiency without the compromise

The new Audi A4 ultraAs with the new A5 Coupé ultra, the new A4 ultra

embraces Audi’s latest and most efficient design

and engineering technology to return the lowest CO2

emissions and best fuel consumption in the A4 range.

Powered by the same highly efficient EU6-standard

2.0 TDI 163PS engine with six-speed manual gearbox as

the A5 Coupé ultra, performance is brisk with the Saloon

achieving 0-62mph in just 8.3secs (Avant 8.6secs).

Yet the A4 Saloon 2.0 TDI ultra returns CO2

emissions of just 109g/km (Avant 114g/km) with

combined fuel consumption of up to an impressive

67.3mpg (Avant 64.2mpg).

The new Audi A5 Coupé ultraOutstanding efficiency blended with a truly dynamic

drive give the new Audi A5 Coupé 2.0 TDI ultra SE

compelling ownership appeal.

Peak power of an impressive 163PS belies the

A5 Coupé ultra’s CO2 emissions of just 109g/km.

Yet, it enables BIK tax in the 17% band in 2014/15,

equating to monthly liability for a 20% tax payer

from just £88, or £176 a month for a 40% tax payer,

applicable from 1 April 2014.

Meanwhile, combined fuel consumption of up

to 67.3mpg helps to keep you away from the pumps.

Advanced drivetrain technology

The new A5 Coupé ultra’s impressive efficiency is

achieved thanks to a highly advanced EU6 emission-

standard engine using AdBlue® technology.

The ultra-low emission system uses a DeNOx

catalyst, diesel particulate filter and injection of

AdBlue®, a biodegradable urea and water-based

additive that processes exhaust gases to remove

harmful NOx emissions.

Sleek looks, dynamic performance

The new A5 Coupé ultra blends its svelte and sporty

two-door styling with a large boot and comfortable

space for two adults in the rear.

Its smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission

helps achieve a spirited 0-62mph time of 8.3secs and a

140mph top speed (where conditions permit).

Comprehensively equipped

The new A5 Coupé ultra SE comes with luxurious

specification to match its sporting character.

Standard equipment includes 17˝ ‘5-arm’ design

alloy wheels, a ten-speaker Audi Concert CD/radio with

MP3 compatibility and DAB digital radio reception,

Bluetooth® interface, deluxe 3-zone climate control,

‘Milano’ leather upholstery, cruise control, light and rain

sensors and rear acoustic parking as standard, while

split-folding rear seats allow full use to be made of the

Coupé’s versatile boot space.

Refreshingly low BIK tax liabilities start from just

£80 a month for a 20% tax payer in 2014/15, or £160

a month for a 40% tax payer driving a new A4 Saloon

2.0 TDI ultra SE.

A4 ultra: a new addition to the range

The new A4 Saloon and Avant ultra models add to the

existing 2.0 TDIe 136PS, 2.0 TDI 150PS and 2.0 TDI

177PS derivatives in the A4 range.

Comprehensively equipped

In SE trim, the new A4 ultra includes 17˝ ‘5-spoke’

design alloy wheels, 3-zone climate control with digital

display, rear acoustic parking system, light and rain

sensors, an Audi Concert radio/CD system with MP3

compatibility and 6.5˝ colour display, 10 speakers and

DAB digital radio reception, Bluetooth® interface,

colour driver’s information system, cruise control and

power-operated tailgate (Avant models only).

SE Technik adds £4,025 of value for just £1,000 RRP

For an upgrade premium of just £1,000 RRP over SE,

the SE Technik trim level adds customer value of no

less than £4,025 RRP.

A top-of-the-range HDD-based satellite navigation

system, Milano leather upholstery, Audi Music

Interface (AMI), Audi parking system plus and metallic

paint all come as standard on the SE Technik.

The new Audi A3 Sportback e-tron: comparisons

Offering genuine everyday usability with outstanding

performance, the new Audi A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in

hybrid blends highly advanced drivetrain technologies

with the design flair of the Audi A3 Sportback.

An all-encompassing e-mobility solution

The A3 Sportback e-tron addresses environmental, fuel

consumption and cost of ownership issues to provide a

no-compromise e-mobility solution.

Combining a powerful 1.4 TFSI petrol engine with an

electric motor, the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron has a total

power output of 204PS, with peak torque of 350Nm,

making it one of the most powerful A3 models ever

produced.

As such, it can be the only car you will ever need, with

space for five plus luggage, performance that betters a

conventional Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI and the ability

to cover over 500 miles with no ‘range anxiety’ issues.

Exceptional performance and efficiency

Such outputs enable the A3 Sportback e-tron to

accelerate from 0-62mph in just 7.6secs and continue to

a 137mph top speed, or 81mph in pure electric mode.

Yet fuel consumption of up to 188mpg1 and CO2

emissions as low as 35g/km1 (NEDC figures2) make it the

most efficient model in the Audi range.

Government acquisition incentives

Government support in the form of the Plug-in Car Grant

is available to reduce the higher initial cost of an electric

car or plug-in hybrid.

The grant provides a subsidy of 25% (up to £5,000)

towards the price of a new electric car or plug-in hybrid

with CO2 emissions of 75g/km or less.

Extra funding for ‘Plugged-in Places’

The government has committed an extra £9 million to

boost the funding of the Plugged-in Places programme

in the UK, which supports the nationwide installation of

electric vehicle chargepoints. For further details see the

news item on page 6 of this issue of Progress.

For details of charging locations nationwide, see

www.gov.uk/government/publications/plugged-in-places

Charging points are also being installed by some

councils across the UK and by private sector providers.

By the end of March 2013, over 4,000 charge-points

had been provided through the eight Plugged-in Places

projects, with about 65% of chargepoints publicly

accessible.

Using data from chargepoint manufacturers, it is

estimated that non Plugged-in Places organisations may

have also installed about 5,000 chargepoints nationwide.

New S line Style and Sport Editions enhance Q7

S line plus, now for Q3

Q5 range the broadest ever

Two tempting new models have joined the Audi Q7 range, both based on the S line plus trim

and available with the 3.0 TDI 245PS or 4.2 TDI 340PS engines.

The S line Style Edition (left) is immediately identified by its 21˝ ‘five-arm rotor’ alloy

wheels in matt titanium finish and upgraded off-road styling pack, comprising a robust

underbody guard in stainless steel finish, chrome door handle inserts, extended wheelarches

and front and rear bumpers in bodycolour for just £1,500 RRP over S line plus.

For a premium of £3,000 RRP over S line plus, S line Sport Edition models (above) add

a defined sporting edge with 21˝ ‘five-segment-spoke’ alloy wheels and the exterior sports

styling package with front lower bumper spoilers, stainless steel underbody protection, large

side air intakes, extended wheelarches and dual oval tailpipes integrated in the rear bumper.

Building on the sporting appeal of the

S line trim, the Q3 S line plus (above) is

now available on all quattro models,

creating a new range-topper with extra

equipment worth over £3,000 RRP for a

premium of just £2,350 RRP over S line.

The S line plus trim level adds 19˝

‘five-segment-spoke’ alloy wheels, black

perforated Alcantara®/leather upholstery,

SD card-based satellite navigation, privacy

glass, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, Audi

parking system plus, cruise control and

metallic paint as standard.

Meanwhile, a new 1.4 TFSI 150PS engine

lowers the entry point to the Q3 range

to just £23,870 OTR for the 1.4 TFSI SE

offering an even more enticing proposition.

Available in SE and S line trims, the

front-wheel drive 1.4 TFSI models give

fleet and user-chooser customers a fine

opportunity at prices that start £1,725 OTR

lower than previously.

With an engine range starting with a 2.0 TDI 150PS unit offering

CO2 emissions from 154g/km to the mighty 313PS 3.0 BiTDI, the

Audi Q5 has established enduring appeal.

BIK tax liabilities start from just £136 a month for a 20% tax

payer in 2014/15, and with quattro as standard the Q5 offers true

go-anywhere capability and extra security in slippery conditions.

In common with all models in the Audi Q range, the Q5 is

available with the top of the range S line plus specification, as well

as SE and S line trims, offering a derivative to suit all needs.

S line plus adds 20˝ ‘5-segment-spoke’ design alloy wheels,

HDD-based satellite navigation, Audi Music Interface (AMI), a

power operated tailgate, Audi parking system plus, privacy glass

and metallic paint as standard to S line trim.

Premium: it’s an often-used term in the

fleet and leasing industry. One that should

be used to distinguish superior design,

technology, quality and – increasingly – the

entire ownership experience.

Yet it’s a description that often describes

a car’s upmarket features or a top-end

pricing strategy in the mainstream sector,

where ‘premium’ also carries with it a higher

price than might be usual.

So while emulating the typical features

of a premium brand, such as improved build

methods, higher quality materials and hi-

tech equipment, might be possible, it is far

more difficult to replicate all the factors

involved in the appeal of

a premium model.

For example, residual values play a key

role in establishing a car’s whole-life costs.

For traditional premium brands, residual

values are inherently stronger, helping

to ensure lower cost of ownership and its

desirability to subsequent owners.

CAP Consulting and brand positioning

Now, leading industry analysts are sounding

a note of caution for those with ambitions to

reposition their brands, or certain models, in

the premium sector.

As more manufacturers than ever plan

to establish a premium presence in the UK

car market, independent automotive expert

CAP Consulting warns that the ownership

experience is as important as the quality

of the cars they launch. Fast and efficient

problem-solving for customers is the key to

building success.

CAP Consulting Specialist, Matthew

Freeman (pictured right), says customers for

emerging brands are always taking a risk,

and argues that simply emulating existing

premium brands is insufficient to guarantee

success in the sector for new entrants.

“Luxurious dealerships, memorable

commercials and clever product placement

all have their part to play in placing a brand,

but the benefit they can deliver, at best, is

only parity with existing premium brands,”

says Freeman.

“The customer’s ownership experience

when, inevitably, problems arise is what

sets genuine premium brands apart from

those which merely launch higher quality,

more expensive, products. Going ‘above and

beyond’ the norm is vital to maintaining

competitive advantage.”

Bain & Company reveals that a customer

is four times more likely to defect to a

competitor if a problem is service-related

rather than price or product-based.

It’s one of the reasons why recognition

as the provider of an exceptional customer

experience wins the day, and why infra-

structure plays such an important part in

gaining customer loyalty.

Leading industry publication Automotive

Management (AM) named Audi ‘Franchise of

the Year’ in its 2014 AM Awards.

And the influential Fleet News FN50

annual reliability survey gauged the opinion

of over 600,000 company car drivers

from the UK’s top 50 leasing companies

in 2013 to name Audi the ‘Most Reliable

Manufacturer ’.

Furthermore, leading leasing industry

benchmarking and research specialist

ExpertEye named Audi ‘Best Fleet Dealer

Network (Sales)’ for providing the best

service to fleet drivers in the ordering and

delivery of vehicles. The data was drawn from

a survey of 6,000 drivers of leased vehicles

in 2013.

Such awards point to Audi’s commitment

to a premium customer experience. Through

the Audi Centre network, bespoke services

such as Audi Exclusive, which enables

a customer to achieve the ultimate in

personalisation, are as important to the

overall brand experience as AudiCam, which

allows a customer to view at first hand his or

her car undergoing servicing or repairs.

For Audi, premium is the delivery of a

customer experience that’s best in class,

accompanied by an invitation not simply to

participate in the brand but to become part

of a brand community.
