Music Video Audience Feedback To find out what my audience thought of my music video for the song ‘Somebody Told Me’ I made a survey to ask the audience what they thought of the basic music conventions, editing, mise-en-scene, camerawork and what can be improved. The first two questions are used to find out what sort of person conventionally would watch this music video, I asked what gender and age the audience is. I found that a majority of people who watch this type of indie/rock music video are male in the age range of 11 and 17, this may be because the band members are in this age range and the audience can see the band as role models. What did you like about the music video? I asked this question to see what my audience enjoyed in the video and to see what is used a lot in indie/rock music videos. A majority of people said what they liked most about the music video was the fact it had a wide variety of camera angles/shots. Other things people liked about the video was the range of locations used e.g. the ‘wasteland’, the stage and other locations. And finally the fact the video is conventional to other indie/rock music videos out there. From this audience feedback I have found that a variety of camera angles are good for a decent indie/rock music video

Audience Feedback from Music Video and Ancillary Products

To get the audiences feedback on my music video and ancillary products I have made a survey on www.surveymonkey.com and have asked my audience questions about the video and ancillary products. I have asked about the editing, camera angles, basic music conventions and what can be improved. Music Video Audience FeedbackTo find out what my audience thought of my music video for the song ‘Somebody Told Me’ I made a survey to ask the audience what they thought of the basic music conventions, editing, mise-en-scene, camerawork and what can be improved.

The first two questions are used to find out what sort of person conventionally would watch this music video, I asked what gender and age the audience is. I found that a majority of people who watch this type of indie/rock music video are male in the age range of 11 and 17, this may be because the band members are in this age range and the audience can see the band as role models.

What did you like about the music video?I asked this question to see what my audience enjoyed in the video and to see what is used a lot in indie/rock music videos.

What editing techniques did you like in the music video?I asked this question to find out what editing techniques I used were liked by the audience and what editing techniques the audience thought were good for this genre of music video. A few people in my survey said they liked the black and white editing at the start where the band are performing on the stage, it is used in many other indie/rock music videos. Some other people enjoyed the shot reverse shots used frequently in the video and the eyeline match of the band member picking up the guitar. From this audience feedback I have found the audience like good editing techniques including black and white imagery and many shot editing techniques.

What camera angles/shots did you like in the music video?I asked this question to find out what camera angles/shots were my audiences favourite and what angles/shots they would like to see more in indie/rock music videos. Shots and angles that the audience liked were, the high low angles that showed the lead singers authority, the high angles in the wasteland, the pans when the band members are walking and the handheld camera used the ‘wasteland’. From this audience feedback I have found that the audience in this music genre like shots that potray a chartacters dominance and shots which are moving including handheld camera shots and pans.

What mise-en-scene features did you like in the music video?I asked this question to find out what mise-en-scene features my audience liked in my indie/rock music video. The mise-en-scene includes, settings, lighting, props, clothing and colours, so my audience gave me feedback on these features. The main feature my audience liked was the clothing worn by the band members, the lead singer wore a blazer which is worn by indie artists when performing and also other band members wore polo shirts and chinos also conventionally indie. Another thing people liked was the locations used in the video, they particularly liked the ‘wasteland’ because this type of setting is used in other indie/rock music videos. And finally the props used in the video was another feature my audience liked, we used a guitar, microphone and keyboard because these instruments are used in the song and in conventional indie/rock music videos.

What do you rate the music video out of 10?I asked this question to see what my audience rated my indie/rock video out of 10, therefore using this feedback I could see how much I need to improve my video so that it is up to the standards of a conventional indie/rock music video. From my feedback my audience have rated my indie/rock video between 5 and 8, this means if I improved a few features in the video it would be near the standard of a conventional indie/rock music video.

What do you think can be improved in the music video?I asked this question to see what my audience thought I could improve in my music video to make the overall video better and more like conventional indie/rock music videos. The main feature of my music video people thought could be improved was the pan near the start where it jumps a little, taking this into account if I was to make the video again I would either replace this scene or improve the quality. Another thing people think can be improved is the narrative, the video wasn’t supposed to have a specific narrative but obviously people in my audience enjoy a decent narrative instead of no narrative. Using this feedback, if I was to make the music video again I would make it with a narrative because my audience enjoy a narrative in an indie/rock music video. Lastly a few people in the audience think some of the camera angles and shots were too long and start to get boring, if I was to make

the video again I would use this feedback and make a few of the shots shorter to make the video a little less boring. And finally…Do you think the music video follows the basic conventions for an indie/rock music video?I asked this question to see if my music video was similar and followed the basic conventions used in other indie/rock music videos, using the feedback to alter my video to make it more like other indie/rock music videos and therefore better for my audience. Everyone in my audience feedback said they thought overall the music video met the basic conventions in standard indie/rock music videos. Some of their feedback included they thought the clothing used in the music video was conventionally indie/rock, the blazer, chinos and plimsolls are worn by many indie/rock artists in their music videos. Also the props used in the music video are used in many indie/rock videos and are conventional to this genre; guitars, microphones and keyboards are used in many indie/rock music videos. And finally the clips used in music video are conventional clips, the band performing in the video and many cutaway scenes are frequent in conventional indie/rock music videos.

In conclusion my survey has given me constructive feedback about my indie/rock music video, I now know what I have done well in my video and what I can improve on based on what my audience has said. I found out that I had many conventional indie features including clothing, settings and camera angles/shots and I also found out that I could improve the overall narrative of the video and some of the shots are slightly too long and could cause the audience to become bored.
