Audra McDonaldAudra McDonald’s résumé makes dizzying reading. Whether it’s

Shakespeare or Shonda Rhimes, Jerome Kern or Jason Robert

Brown, she’s a multi-talented, genre-jumping performer whose

long and eclectic list of theatre, television and film credits

makes the term ‘triple threat’ suddenly seem woefully

inadequate.

‘Everything informs everything,’ she says, ‘even if the different

genres require different muscles. All the different strands of my

work nourish and feed into one another. When you’re singing,

you’re also making acting choices, and when you’re filming

a scene for television, for example, you find an almost musical

rhythm to your interactions with the other actors.’

She thrives on the variety – ‘All of us have multiple interests,

it’s what brings us fulfilment on a human level’ – but McDonald’s

schedule can be hectic, and keeping sane on the road is

a question, she says, of discipline. ‘It’s a bit of a monastic life.

When I’m travelling, I tend to keep to myself and stay quiet as

much possible. I always wish I could explore all of these

wonderful cities but unfortunately I don’t get out as often as

I’d like. When I arrive in a city, I go straight to the hotel to rest,

and often don’t leave until it’s time to go to the concert hall and

rehearse. Before going on stage, I get very quiet and turn my

focus inward. I try to conserve my strength, while preparing to

turn my soul inside out for the audience.’

When it comes to compiling a concert program such as

tonight’s, Audra McDonald is careful to strike a balance, drawing

on every corner of her diverse repertoire. ‘I want to give the

audience a full, multi-course meal,’ she says, ‘with a little bit of

everything: some comedy, some songs that are very familiar to

them, some unfamiliar music, and some old gems.’ Above all, she

says, ‘I’m someone who looks for challenges, whether they come

from old or new works. I’m constantly looking for material that

scares me, that will challenge me, and that will help me grow as

an artist.’

Sometimes that means exploring new material from emerging

writers or unearthing lesser-known treasures; sometimes it

means putting her own stamp on some of Broadway’s greatest

hits: songs which you could probably sing along with, given

half a chance. Are those beloved favourites – songs like ‘Climb

Ev’ry Mountain’ or ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ – especially

intimidating to take on? ‘The great standards come packed with

the whole history of all the different artists who’ve interpreted

them over the years,’ says McDonald. ‘It’s a very daunting prospect. But sometimes the lure of a great song is so strong that I can’t resist attempting it.’

Audiences familiar with Audra McDonald’s sensational Broadway career – she’s won an astonishing six Tony Awards, more than any other performer – might be surprised to see only a few of her stage successes represented in tonight’s program. ‘In a concert setting,’ she explains, ‘it doesn’t really make sense to recreate the given circumstances of a scene from a musical – but it’s also difficult for me to step out of character and sing a song out of context, when all the characters I’ve played onstage are still so much a part of my emotional muscle memory. If I’m not tied to the specificity of a particular character, it allows me the freedom to filter a song through my own personality and explore the themes that make it universally relatable.’

And it’s that personal connection, she believes, which is one of the greatest joys – for audience and performer alike – of live performance, be it a concert or a Broadway show. ‘It’s a visceral thrill that you can’t get anywhere else,’ she says. ‘I’m most fulfilled when I feel like there’s been a connection with the audience: something shared, something learned, something received. I want people to feel like they are in my living room – and vice versa.’

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Audra McDonald sings BroadwayEver since Show Boat pioneered the ‘book musical’ in 1927, we’ve expected a show’s songs and dance numbers to be woven into its dramatic fabric: to further its plot and develop its characters. Yet we also measure a song’s success by how well it stands on its own – whether its music and its message strike a universal chord.

There are shows which produce a string of such songs. Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess was an early example, and while the show itself took time to be recognised as one of the greats, its music caught the public imagination immediately. The score’s blend of spiritual, jazz and classical styles meant singers of every stripe could put their own stamp on its songs, and none proved more popular than the melancholy lullaby, Summertime – at 25,000 versions and counting, it’s now one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music.

Rodgers and Hammerstein also had a knack for songs which fit their characters to a tee, yet have been lifting out nicely ever since. State Fair managed a couple, including the skittish It Might As Well Be Spring, which won the pair their only Academy Award, but it’s arguably The Sound of Music, their final collaboration, which offers the richest pickings of all. The soaring Climb Ev’ry Mountain is a prime example of a song whose inspirational message has long since transcended its specific context, and if the lyrics of I Have Confidence are more plot-specific (‘A Captain with seven children…’) anyone who’s started a new job will nonetheless recognise Maria’s nervous stream of consciousness.

Lerner and Loewe, the other pair who defined Broadway’s Golden Age, enjoyed their greatest success with My Fair Lady. In fact so popular were its songs – Eliza’s show-stopping I Could Have Danced All Night included – that the original cast recording topped the US album charts for 1956, surpassing even Elvis Presley. Irving Berlin’s Annie, Get Your Gun is another show stuffed with enduring hits: the bluesy Moonshine Lullaby is a gentler contrast to the hijinks of singalong favourites such as ‘Anything You Can Do’ and ‘Doin’ What Comes Naturally’.

Not that the show itself need be a smash for its songs to take wing. Jule Styne’s Do Re Mi, about a two-bit conman, hasn’t been heard of much since its 1960 premiere, but thanks to singers from Doris Day to Aretha Franklin – and most famously Jimmy Durante – its love duet Make Someone Happy most certainly has. Rodgers and Hart’s Babes In Arms is better known in its radically altered screen adaptation than

SUMMERTIME AND…

Stephen Sondheim has described Dubose Heyward’s lyrics for Porgy and Bess as among the finest in musical theatre. Of the iconic opening line of Summertime, he wrote: ‘That “and” is worth a great deal of attention. I would write “Summertime when” but that “and” sets up a tone, a whole poetic tone, not to mention a whole kind of diction that is going to be used in the play; an informal, uneducated diction and a stream of consciousness…It’s the exact right word, and that word is worth its weight in gold.’

11

in its theatrical form, but the original score contains a plethora of pop standards which were cut from the film: I Wish I Were In Love Again as well as ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘The Lady Is A Tramp’ among them.

Indeed, Hollywood and Broadway have always operated a two-way system. Occasionally a composer is even enticed to devise new material just for the movie adaptation of a show. Stephen Sondheim wrote the solo version of The Glamorous Life specifically for the (less than successful) 1977 film of A Little Night Music, and it’s since been added to stage productions. Likewise Maybe This Time from Cabaret: though its air of brittle hope seems tailor-made for Sally Bowles, Kander and Ebb wrote the song as a standalone single, and it was only after its inclusion in the 1972 film that it was incorporated into the stage show. (‘I Have Confidence’ was also composed specifically for the film version of The Sound of Music.)

Pure Imagination underwent a different sort of importation: it’s the only song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to have been included in an otherwise newly written stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel. Even in the film, its touching innocence stands out amid the psychedelia. The lovable lullaby Baby Mine also originated in a children’s film – Disney’s Dumbo, for which it received an Oscar nomination – before gaining attention again in the 1980s after Bette Midler’s rendition in Beaches.

Sometimes a great song emerges from a movie which isn’t even a musical at all. The characters in Woody Allen’s Radio Days don’t sing, but the soundtrack of big band songs like I Double Dare You is integral to the plot. Moon River, one of the greatest musical moments in cinema, is the only song in Mancini’s otherwise instrumental score for Breakfast at Tiffany’s – and even then it only made the cut after Audrey Hepburn’s intervention.

For every song that’s an instant classic, there’s a clutch of lesser-known beauties waiting in the wings: gems which a concert program is ideally placed to spotlight. Raisin has rarely been seen since its 1973 premiere, but the sweet, smart lyrics of Whose Little Angry Man Are You? will raise a smile from many a parent. And although Hurry, It’s Lovely Up Here from On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, is less frequently heard than the show’s title song, its playful rhymes and sheer joie de vivre are irresistible.

Let’s Dance, a Fred Astaire–Betty Hutton screen vehicle, was overshadowed by Hutton’s next film (Annie, Get Your Gun),

THE REAL MOON RIVER

There is a real life Moon River. Johnny Mercer’s lyrics were inspired by reminiscences of his own childhood in Georgia, overlaid with echoes of Huckleberry Finn’s riverside adventures, and the people of Savannah, Mercer’s hometown, have since named an inlet of the Savannah River ‘Moon River’ in honour of their native son and his most famous song.

but it’s worth seeing just for the tongue-twisting tour de force of I Can’t Stop Talking About Him. The even rarer Gorgeous from The Apple Tree is in a similar spirit, a modern Cinderella’s hilarious and raucous reaction to her transformation from chimney sweep to film star. There are laughs too in the romantic epiphany of Vanilla Ice Cream from She Loves Me – a musical adaptation of the same play that inspired You’ve Got Mail.

A more nuanced take on newfound love comes in When Did I Fall in Love? from Fiorello!, the song’s intensifying vocal line mirroring the slow burning love it describes. Stars and the Moon from Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World tells the opposite story: it’s a wry take on romance with a sting in the tail. Adam Gwon’s I’ll Be Here has an even more tragic twist, made more shocking by the chatty narrative which precedes it, although ultimately it’s a searing statement about moving on. One could argue that Kate Miller-Heidke’s whimsical yet sharp-edged Facebook Song takes a similar theme – though the delivery (and language) could hardly be more different.

If pedigree alone can create a classic, then it may just be a matter of time for The Scottsboro Boys, whose 2010 premiere marked the final collaboration by the legendary Kander and Ebb. Go Back Home, sung by the men as they await execution, sits alongside some of their greatest numbers. There are even echoes of Cabaret in its depiction of fading hope: ‘Maybe times will turn, I pray so,’ sings one of the boys. ‘Maybe someday I’ll get lucky.’

Paradoxically, if any common thread unites all these songs, it’s variety. They’re songs of love and of heartbreak, of suffering and joy, of optimism and resignation. Some leave us in tears of laughter, others simply in tears; some we could sing along with note-for-note and others we might be hearing for the first time. All of them, though, achieve what a great song should. They take life’s biggest moments and grandest emotions and distil them into a few captivating minutes of musical bliss. What more could we ask?

AUDRA McDONALD SOLO

Audra McDonald’s most recent solo release, Go Back Home (2013), is a personal selection of songs, many by composers with whom she has been long associated, such as Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Stephen Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein. The tender title track – from The Scottsboro Boys – is by Kander & Ebb.NONESUCH 517766

Her previous solo release was Build a Bridge (2006) in which she looked beyond her usual repertoire to build a program of songs by artists from the pop world: Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro and Neil Young; younger songwriters John Mayer, Rufus Wainwright and Nellie McKay; and compositions by her long-time friend and collaborator, Adam Guettel, who wrote the title track.NONESUCH 79862

Earlier solo albums include Happy Songs (2002), a recording of numbers from the 1930s and 40s, which she made following the birth of her daughter. Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, and the Gershwins are just some of the songwriters featured on this uplifting album. How Glory Goes (2000) features a variety of music theatre styles, including standards from Harold Arlen and Leonard Bernstein, while her debut solo album Way Back to Paradise (1998) showcases a new generation of composer-lyricists, including LaChiusa and Guettel.

The orchestra’s first Chief Conductor was Sir Eugene Goossens, appointed in 1947; he was followed by Nicolai Malko, Dean Dixon, Moshe Atzmon, Willem van Otterloo, Louis Frémaux, Sir Charles Mackerras, Zdenĕk Mácal, Stuart Challender, Edo de Waart and Gianluigi Gelmetti. Vladimir Ashkenazy was Principal Conductor from 2009 to 2013. The orchestra’s history also boasts collaborations with legendary figures

such as George Szell, Sir Thomas Beecham, Otto Klemperer and Igor Stravinsky.

The SSO’s award-winning education program is central to its commitment to the future of live symphonic music, developing audiences and engaging the participation of young people. The orchestra promotes the work of Australian composers through performances, recordings and its commissioning program. Recent premieres have included major works by Ross Edwards, Lee Bracegirdle, Gordon Kerry, Mary Finsterer, Nigel Westlake and Georges Lentz, and the orchestra’s recordings of music by Brett Dean have been released on both the BIS and SSO Live labels.

Other releases on the SSO Live label, established in 2006, include performances with Alexander Lazarev, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy and David Robertson. In 2010–11 the orchestra made concert recordings of the complete Mahler symphonies with Ashkenazy, and has also released recordings of Rachmaninoff and Elgar orchestral works on the Exton/Triton labels, as well as numerous recordings on ABC Classics.

This is the second year of David Robertson’s tenure as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.

James and Leonie Furber have been SSO subscribers for more than 40 years and love the complex role the horn plays in orchestral music. So when the chance arose to support Robert Johnson’s chair, they were thrilled to take the opportunity. Over the years they’ve enjoyed getting to know Robert and exploring James’s eclectic music collection together.
