During the event, NNS President Matt Mulherin spoke with the group. “I hope this summer has provided you insight of what it’s like to work at Newport News Shipbuilding and I hope it was meaningful,” Mulherin said. “The shipyard has always been good to me and my family. I hope that you felt connected

while you were here and think about coming back to work with us again after graduation.”

Following Mulherin’s presentation, he answered student questions before leaving them with one last thought. “During the time you were here, we have delivered Minnesota (SSN 783), completed the structure of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and welcomed USS Enterprise (CVN 65) back home to complete its inactivation – you all are officially part of history.”

2013 MOE Award Winners Announced

ESGR Presents Award to ShipbuilderOn Aug. 2, Marsha Cundiff (O18) was presented with an “Above and Beyond” award from the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Cundiff was nominated for the award by a service member. The purpose of the award is to recognize employers at the local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits.

Shipbuilders Steering the Way

Shipbuilder Elected as IAAP PresidentIn June, Beth Hoss (E89) was elected as the 2013-14 President for the Virginia-West Virginia Division of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). “When I started my career in the shipyard in 2005, I never imagined being where I am today,” said Hoss, E89 admin. “I attribute my professional growth to hard work, family support, encouragement from company management and members of IAAP.”

Hoss encourages other admins who are interested in career growth, community building, education and leadership development to become members. IAAP has more than 22,000 members and affiliates and more than 500 chapters worldwide. To learn more about IAAP or to find a chapter near you, visit www.iaap-hq.org from a home computer. Annual School Tools Drive to Begin Aug. 21Newport News Shipbuilding’s 2013 School Tools Drive to benefit area children is set to run Aug. 21 through Sept. 6. Collection boxes will be placed in various locations around the shipyard beginning Aug. 21. Items needed include:

• Composition and spiral notebooks• Number two pencils• Three-ring notebooks• Notebook paper• Five-subject notebooks• Report covers

• Compass/protractors• Pens• Rulers• Markers/highlighters• Erasers• Colored pencils/crayons

• Glue/glue sticks• Pencil boxes

• Scissors (kid safe)• Back packs

RequestIT is replacing the ITR system on LiveLink and the online Service Desk web ticketing application. The new system is designed to improve fulfillment times, reduce approval delays and allow employees to make multiple selections in a single request.

the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park on Friday, Aug. 23 and the final event on Aug. 31 at Langley Speedway. The Communications Department will have a booth at both events and will be distributing posters, bottle openers, koozies, etc.
