Tyson Cole and Burt Balancad were the players to beat at Knobbys’s July 9’s & Under 8-Ball event on July 5th as both players navigated the right side of the brackets to face off for the hot-seat.

Cole had notable wins over Bruce Hirose and Pete Barrios while Balancad had notable wins over Troy Ridder and Ed Scott. The hot-seat match was a close one with Tyson winning the match 2-1.

On the one loss side, Ed Scott ended John Waldecker’s tournament in 4th place. Waldecker had lost his first match and ran the one loss side until facing Scott.

Ed had no answer for Burt in the next match, with Balancad scoring the 2-0 win to earn another shot at Cole in the finals.

The first set of the finals saw Burt come back from a 0-1 score to win two games in a row for the 2-1 win. Instead of playing another set, both players agreed to a split of 1st and 2nd place.

Smith, Williams & Rowitz Win Stingers BCA Warm Up Events

John Smith

Players heading off to Vegas for the BCA Cham-pionships had one last chance to get their games ready (and maybe pick up a little extra spend-ing money for the trip) over the July 13th - 14th weekend at Stinger’s Singles and “Jack & Jill” scotch doubles events.

Saturday kicked off with eleven teams compet-ing in the scotch doubles event. This event would play down to four teams and then be temporarily put on hold to get the singles event started.

When the scotch event paused, Todd Rowitz & Susan Williams had just beaten Bernie Store & Mike Sandoval 6-4 for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Sophia Morquecho & Burt Balancad were facing Brian & Veronica Poore.Burt and Sophia were responsible for the Poore’s first loss, but Brian & Veronica had revenge on their minds. Things looked good early for Brian & Veronia as they raced to a hill-0 lead. That was when the wheels fell off and Burt & Sophia took control and won the match hill-hill.

The scotch players temporarily put their partner-ships aside as the singles event got underway with twenty four players competing.

This event saw John Smith and Bernie Store race to the match for the hot-seat. Smith’s path included wins over Frank Alvarez, Todd Row-itz, Doc Rice and Brian Reich. Bernie matched Smith along the way with wins over Susan Wil-liams, Sara Miller and Ed Scott.

The hot-seat match saw Smith score a hard fought win over Store, sending Bernie to the one loss side.

Play on the one loss side of the singles event saw Ryan Anderson bulldozing the brackets after an early loss to Sara Miller. Anderson won five straight matches, eliminating Troy Ridder, Sonia Flores, Doc Rice, Jerry Stuck-art and Ed Scott before having his winning streak brought to a halt by Brian Reich. After Reich’s loss to Smith, he eliminated Mike Williams and then ended Anderson’s one loss side streak.

Reich then went on to earn his spot in the finals with a win over Bernie Store, sending Bernie back to the scotch event to find her partner and get their semi final match against Sophia & Burt going.

Reich gave it all he had in the finals against Smith, but he couldn’t find an answer for Smith’s play and had to settle for second place.

The scotch doubles event ended with Store & Sandoval defeating Balancad & Morquecho, but falling to Susan and Todd in the finals.

The Most Important Shot

By Roger LongCertifi ed Instructor

Have you ever pondered if any one shot is the most im-portant shot in the game? If you have, what did you come up with? Is it the game ball? Is it the ball before the game ball? Or are you the type who considers every shot to be the most important? If you are the latter, I commend you for your dedication to the pursuance of good concentration, but I have a different perspective, myself.

I consider the break shot to be the most important shot in the game. And that goes for just about any game, whether it be 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball, 14.1, or One-Pocket.

Think about this with me for a minute. Regardless of a player’s skill level, a good break allows the breaker to retain control of the table (at least for that moment), while a bad break turns control over to the non-breaker (at least for

that moment). What happens after that “moment” will normally depend on the knowledge and experience of each player, but the quality of the break will still the determining factor in who gets fi rst crack at winning the game.

Take for instance, the game of 8-Ball. Whether I break the balls hard or soft won’t matter much if I don’t sink any-thing. My opponent will get to take control of the table by either sinking the fi rst ball or by playing a safety on me. The consequences will get even more severe if I sail the cue ball off the table, because now my opponent will get ball-in-hand, which makes his/her decision much easier.

The games of 9-Ball and 10-Ball are even more likely (than 8-Ball) to pres-ent run-out possibilities, and therefore, more precarious to the breaker who does not break well. In tournaments involving expert players, most sets are won by the player who controls the break the best.

In the games of 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and 10-

Ball, breaking well means sinking at least one ball, plus keeping the cue ball on the table (preferably, somewhere near the center).

In the game of 14.1 (sometimes called “Straight Pool”), the break is a de-fensive shot. If you screw it up, your opponent may just run oodles of balls on you.

The break in One-Pocket is similar to the break in 14.1 in that it is more of a defensive shot. The intention is to hit the rack softly, driving as many balls as possible toward your pocket, and leaving your opponent with no oppor-tunity to come with an offensive shot of his/her own. Not breaking well in this game can have devastating effects.

Most 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and 10-Ball tour-naments are run as a “winner breaks” format, which means that the winner of a game gets to break in the next game. In the game of 14.1, the winner of the lag gets to choose who breaks (and they almost always choose to have their opponent break). In One-Pocket,

the winner of the lag (or coin fl ip) gets the fi rst break, and then the break alternates from there. But no matter which game it is, the emphasis put on who gets to break is a testa-ment to the importance of the break, itself.

So maybe now you can see why I feel that the break is the most important shot in the game. Do it right, and you’re in control. Do it wrong, and you’ll greatly increase your chance of losing.

APA Phoenix Metro is proud to announce our fi rst Ladies only team will be attending the APA National Team Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada this Month. This is the fi rst year for us to send a woman’s only team to compete in the National event. Gina Nowlin, the APA league operator here in Phoenix said she was very excited about this team. “We have all waited a long time to be able to send a team and now all the hard work has paid off. These girls really deserve the chance to compete and we are all proud of them”, Gina said.

The team captain, Arlene (Arte) Lewis has been playing for the APA for over 8 years and has captained many teams since she joined and is currently captain for 4 teams including her Ladies team.

Erin Hammill, Arte’s daughter, is the co-captain of the team. Erin has been playing for APA since 1997 and is no stranger to the game. Rounding out the rest of the team is Christine Hanson and Diane Loram, who have not played for as long as Arte and Erin, but have just as much competitiveness and spirit as anyone in the league. The girls have only been playing as a group for one session but they all play well and have a great chance at winning it all in Vegas. Good luck ladies and above all, have a good time.

The ladies division of APA Phoenix Metro is looking for players for their new session, so if anyone would like to compete on a weekly basis contact the local APA at 602-920-9193.

APA Phoenix Metro held its 6th Captain’s Tournament on July 14th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. A full fi eld of 64 players showed up to represent their teams and play for the honor of having their name on the wall at Main Street Billiards to go along with the trophy and cash. Tim Daniel from the Raceway Bar in Maricopa won the 1st place trophy and $300 in cash. He played excep-tionally well fending off some very strong players that had their eye on the 1st place prize.

Some of APA’s fi nest players came out for a great day of quality competition and fun. Several of APA’s lower ranked players had a great outing with several of them placing in the top 8 spots, proving that the Equalizer Handicap System that APA uses allows everyone a chance to win.

The Captains tournament is held each session at Main Street Billiards and is a tournament that was created to show appreciation for captains in the APA. Gina Nowlin and her husband Doug Nowlin are the APA league operators in the Phoenix area. Gina says the captains are the players that are the most valuable person on a team. They are the ones that keep things organized and fl owing smoothly on league nights. They have a lot of responsibility and we just want to show them some appreciation. This tournament has become very popular and has grown each session since it was begun 2 years ago.

We would like to congratulate the following winners and thank everyone for making the tournament such a success.

1st Place - $300 - Tim Daniel 2nd Place - $150 - Cisco Sarmiento3rd Place - $75 each - Claudette Metz and Kevin Knuckey4th Place - $40 each - Heather Michelle, James Main, Craig Loram and Tony Muncie

We would also like to thank Thor and his staff at Main Street Billiards for host-ing this tournament each session. They always take good care of the players.

Mike, what is the difference in today’s new players as opposed to when you started playing?

Ok, I believe I know what you are asking so here goes.

Today’s player has advantages we didn’t have when I started playing.

First of all was the quality of the dart boards and the games that could be played. We had only 4 games on the fi rst elec-tronic boards, and no cricket. The dart weight limit was 12 grams, the weight of most bar darts today. You had only a few manufacturers of the soft tip darts and the tips were ter-rible. They would bend every throw. There were no real dart cases either, players used tin boxes, cigar boxes and any-thing they could. Darts were always getting messed up, bent, and the fl ights would never be

straight. The fl ights were made in two pieces and bonded together, this meant you would tear them up real easy.

Now darts are 20 grams with carbon shafts and made out of tungsten. You have Ruthless, L-Style, Fit Flight, and lots more great manufacturers of fl ights that will last lots longer. You have great cases like Dart Master (had to get a plug in) that protect the darts. The tips are lots stronger as well, not to mention all the great dart boards out there that play on line and are state of the art.

It is a totally different world today and the players are taking advantage of it to insure they have the best stuff money can buy. So if you are an up and coming dart player today, make sure you take advantage of all the great products out there that will defi nitely improve you game.

Just my thoughts and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Ask Mike Bull Shooters raises $1,600 for Yarnell Firefi ghter Families

It was a great day on July 20th at Bull Shooters. Thirty Six players showed up for a dart tournament/Fundraiser for the Yarnell Firefi ghter families.

Add lots of great pool players and it was a roaring success. When the day was done there was approximately $1,600 to be given to the 100 Club for the Yarnell 19 families.

Troy Vending , Bull Shooters, Kenny Wright, Dart Master and Suzie Lawson got together some great prizes for a great cause. A great thanks to all of them and and to Tracy Lange for helping get the event rolling. Another thanks to Gina Nowlin for getting the APA players involved in helping the pot get bigger. As usual our regular pool players chipped in as well.

To make it good for all, Bull Shooters added $360 to the tournament. A great event saw some great shooting for lots of players. When it was all over Andy Bates and Barry Yohnka took home the top spot outdistancing Eric Barron and Joe Campbell.

A special Thanks to all who contributed.

Bull Shooters’ Open Scotch Doubles

June 22 was the date for Bull Shooters’ second blind-draw open scotch doubles tournament. As maybe could be expected, the number of entrants were up slightly from the first go-around for this event, but the best news was that pro player, Tommy Kennedy, was one of said entrants.

Blind-draw tournaments have a way of sometimes humbling the best of players, but Kennedy was fortunate enough to get a very good draw in the person of one Charles Ward. And although Kennedy and Ward were challenged at times, they had relatively little trouble in vanquishing the rest of the field and taking home first-place winnings.

Finishing in second place was the team of Trevor Long and Jessica Johnson, with the team of James Main and Jessie Gardella taking third.

The next blind-draw open doubles tournament at Bull Shooters will be held on Saturday, August 17.

Bob Mizer was undefeated and took home the majority of the prize money at Kitty’s 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on July 13th.

Mizer was unbeaten on his way to the hot-seat, which he took with a lopsided 7-2 win over BBQ.

On the one loss side, Leo Satterwhite was on a mission. Satterwhite had lost to BBQ on the winners side, but wins over Johnny Garcia and Kitty showed that he was not ready to go home just yet. Unfortunately for Satterwhite, BBQ would beat him again and leave Satterwhite one spot out of the money.

Instead of playing the finals, Mizer and BBQ agreed on a 60/40 split of the prize money.

Eric Young came back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Terry Osborne and complete an undefeated run at Bull Shooter’s One Pocket Madness event on July 13th.

Young and Brett Huth made their way through the winners side and faced off for the hot seat, which was won by Young 2-1.

One the one loss side, Osborne was looking to avenge a late loss to Young. He eliminated Huth 2-1 to earn the right to face off against Young in the extended single elimination final match.

Osborne came out strong in the final match and took a 2-0 lead, only to see Young come back and win three straight games for first place.

The World Professional Billiard League’s 2013 season will continue to remain on hiatus during the next few weeks. At present, an exact restart date of the Las Vegas based league has yet to be announced. During the last few weeks, the WPBL has worked tirelessly to rectify the unforeseen circumstances which have interrupted the league’s 2013 season. The management will continue to make the WPBL players a priority in every business decision made. With that said, it was discussed that a possible restart date of August 1, 2013 may have been plausible. However, in order to align the additional finances as well as strengthen the business model, the WPBL will need to remain on hiatus for the time being. The WPBL players have continued their solidaric show of support during the stoppage of the season, and understand the importance of the league as it relates to the future of their careers as well as the billiards industry as a whole. Chi-cago Rocket’s Captain Rodney Morris had this to say: “I really love playing the game of Bonus Ball. I am looking forward to starting up again. After my recent US Open win, I’m anxious to continue the momentum.” As the management works to resume the season, the staff have also continued to work industriously compiling a collection of the league’s “Top 10 Moments from Weeks 1-6” for the fans enjoyment. This 13 minute video can be viewed on the WPBL’s YouTube channel.

On behalf of the WPBL players, staff and management, we would like to thank the fans and cue sport industry for their overwhelming words of encouragement for our continued success. Finally, it is our intention to keep everyone abreast of any new developments regarding the restart of the WPBL’s 2013 season as soon as that information becomes available. Please continue to follow the WPBL for additional updates: Web: http://wpbltv.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wpbltvcomTwitter: https://twitter.com/WPBLtv

WPBL Extends Hiatus

Beginning immediately the World Professional Billiard League will go on hiatus from the league’s current schedule. Over the next several weeks, the WPBL will begin a plan to correct mistakes made in the operation of the league by management. As most fans know, the WPBL endured unfore-seen hurdles during the launch of the league. As a consequence of the fraudulent practices by the original contractor on the WPBL Arena’s construction, the allotted operating capital for the league’s inaugural season had to be used to finish the construction on the arena. As a result, the WPBL has found itself in a difficult financial predicament only six weeks into the season. Un-fortunately, the business model was not executed according to the original plan and consequently did not allow for such a setback. The WPBL has now been forced to re-evaluate our business structure and restart with a cohesive strategy for success. During the next few weeks, the WPBL staff will take time to redistribute responsibilities and reform our strategies. Two weeks ago the players were informed of the league’s current financial status and have shown an allegiance of support to the WPBL by continuing to play during this time. Furthermore, the players are standing by our decision to recess the league’s season tempo-rarily in an effort to restructure. Both the WPBL staff and players have over-whelmingly spoke out with words of encourage-ment regarding the league. Most notably, Scott Frost captain of the Phoenix Fire had this to say: “This league is the present and future of pro pool and I need the fans and the world to believe me when I tell you there’s no other game on earth

we want to play. If you see the true passion of myself and all of the other players then you must believe we are behind this game and league 110% and look forward to the future as WPBL players!” Philadelphia Aces captain Darren Appleton added “I love the game, it’s the best game I have ever played. I believe in this game and I plead to the public to give it a chance, because it could be the best thing to happen to professional pool. This concept and game is where the future lies for billiards to become recognized globally and finally taken seriously.” We at the WPBL acknowledge the mistakes made op-erating the league. In the coming weeks, we will make every effort to rectify these errors with the cooperation of the staff, players and fans. The WPBL has every intention to continue the 2013 season by executing a newly developed business plan that has the support of the WPBL pros. During this time off, the WPBL will not only work to strengthen its internal structure, but help fans and skep-tics understand how Bonus Ball is played. We recognize that some people are having a difficult time understand-ing various aspects of the game, including subtle rules, or how the scoring relates to the statistics and league standings. In the coming weeks, we look to improve our relationship with our fans as well as the billiards industry as a whole by responding to industry concerns such as this. With the number of active billiards players declining throughout the globe, our goal at the WPBL has always to been to reinvigorate the sport whose rich history dates back to the 15th century, by adding proven con-temporary sporting elements to the game. At present, although numbering in the millions, billiards fans would have a difficult time finding “pool” on traditional broad-cast television. Our mission is to create an outstanding

production of a cue sport that is exciting to watch, challenging to play and esthetically pleasing to the eye. We believe that by building the first dedicated billiards arena in the world, it is evident that we are committed to advancing the future of the sport through the creation of Bonus Ball as well as the World Professional Billiard League. Finally, anyone who has bought WPBL PPV access will be contacted in the coming weeks regarding compensation for their purchase. On behalf of all involved, we want to thank the fans and the billiard community as a whole, for their patience and understanding during this time. The WPBL staff and players will diligently work over the next few weeks to make improvements in all aspects of the corporation for the betterment of league, the players and the industry. Please continue to follow the WPBL for additional updates: Web: http://wpbltv.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wpbltvcomTwitter: https://twitter.com/WPBLtv

Next up for Amado and Francisco was Mike & Nancy in the finals. Again, Mike and Nancy would be racing to four, while their opponents went to seven. That didn’t prove to be a problem with Martinez & Serrano scoring 7-1 and 7-3 wins for first place.
