Kamloopa Powwow: Grand Entry lineup

A note from the outgoing Miss Kamloopa

Tansi, my name is Christa Sampson-Waskewitch and my tribal ancestry is Yakima Confederation and Plains Cree. I have been taught and brought up with strong traditional values from my grandparents, uncles and aunts on both sides of my family.

Being crowned for Miss Kamloopa Princess 2011-2012 has been a tremendous honor. Carrying the title has given a lot of insight of not only myself as a youth, but it has also taught me respect of who I am as a First Nations youth of Canada. Being a youth has its struggles of peers my age. I am proud to say that I am alcohol/drug free and I want to set a good example not only for my siblings but also for our youth. “Our youth can achieve anything without any substance abuse, it is okay to walk our cultural/traditional path and not to worry on any judgement.”

This past year, I have travelled to big powwow cel-ebrations to represent the Kamloopa people with dignity and respect.

I represented the crown of Miss Kamloopa throughout provinces in Canada and right into the United States of America as far as the Gathering of Nations held in Albuquerque, New Mexico to other states such as California, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. On my travels I met so many wonderful people on my trials in Indian Country.

I would like to acknowledge and give thanks to the Kamloopa Powwow Committee, Tk’emlúps Chief and Council and the Tk’emlúps people for welcoming and supporting me through the past year of being Miss Kamloopa 2011-2012.

Good luck to the candidates that will be running for Miss Kamloopa 2012-2013, it is a great honour and respect. May you all have a safe and fun time while you are here at the Kamlooopa Powoww celebration, Hiy hiy.
