The Transfiguration

One word dominates today's feast; 'light'. "Let Your

everlasting light shine upon us sinners." The world is a

dark, cold, and terrifying place. And this darkness is not

dispelled by the physical light of the sun. But then comes

the appearance on earth, the entrance into the world, of a

man, humble and homeless. He appears to have no power

or authority over anyone. Yet he tells people that this

kingdom of darkness, evil and death is not our true life.

This is not the world God created; evil, suffering and death

must and can be conquered. He is sent by God, His

own Father, to save people from this terrible bondage to

darkness sin and death.

Mankind had forgotten his true nature and calling, and

renounced them. With that the capacity to hear and see

God was lost. Mankind must come to believe all over

again that good is stronger than evil, love is stronger than

hate, life stronger than death. Christ helps, heals and give

Himself to everyone. Yet, people do not understand, do not

hear, and do not believe. Jesus could have revealed His

divine glory and power and forced them to believe in him.

He doesn't force Himself on anyone. He wants from them

freely given faith, freely given love, freely given

acceptance. He knew that in the hour of His ultimate

sacrifice and self-giving, everyone would flee and forsake

Him. He revealed a hint of His glory to 3 of His disciples

that light, that glorious victory to which we are all called.

"God is light and in Him there is no darkness." (1 John

1; 6) Christ is the divine light permeating the entire world,

transfiguring man. It is the divine light in which everything

acquires its ultimate and eternal meaning. Peter, upon

seeing this light and glory cried out; "Lord! It is good for

us to be here." From that time on, Christianity, the Church

are the joyous repletion of this; "Lord! It is good for us to

be here." But faith also becomes a plea for everlasting

light and thirst for illumination and transfiguration. This

light continues to shine, through the darkness and evil, like

a ray of sun piercing through the clouds. It is recognized by

the soul, it comforts the heart, it makes us feel alive, and it

transfigures us from within. "Lord! It is good for us to be

here." If only these words might become ours, if only

they might become our soul's answer to the gift of

divine light, if only our prayer might become the prayer

of transfiguration, for the victory of light. 'Let Your

everlasting light shine also upon us sinners.' 'In You is the

source of life and in Your light we see light.' (Fr. Alexander Schemann)

We give Him our time; He gives us His eternity.

We give Him our Humanity; He gives us His Divinity.

We give Him our nothingness; He gives us His all.

Празник Господнього Преображення

Оsoblyvosti Пraznyka

З Богослужіння празника випромінює духовна

радість, подив для Христової величі, сили і слави та

загального визнання Його Божества.

Господнє Преображення несе всім вірникам неземну

радість. "Все днесь наповнилося радістю, бо Христос

преобразився перед учнями" — співаємо на утрені. А з

тією радістю йде в парі великий подив для сили і слави

переміненого Христа. "Перед Твоєю смертю, Господи,

— каже стихира на вечірні — в часі Твого

Преображення гора стала небом і хмара простягнулася

наче намет, і Отець свідчив про Тебе. Там був Петро з

Яковом і Іваном, які мали бути з Тобою при Твоїм

ув'язненні, щоб бачивши Твої чуда, не побоялися Твоїх

страстей".

Та головний зміст і ціль празника Преображення є

глибоко догматичні: визнати і прославити Христове

Божество. На стиховні утрені перед празником читаємо:

"Прийдіть, вийдімо на святу гору і вірою побачимо

пресвітле Господнє Преображення. Йому вірно

поклонімося і закличмо: Ти Бог єдиний, що воплотився

і обожив людський рід". "Той, Хто колись — каже

стихира на вечірні — говорив з Мойсеєм символами на

горі Сінай "Я е Той, Хто е", сьогодні на Фаворській горі

преобразився перед учнями... говорячи з Христом

Мойсей і Ілля засвідчили, що Він е Паном живих і

мертвих та що Він — Бог, який говорив колись через

Закон і Пророків". На хвалебних утрені ми його

славимо: "Ти, що від віків е Бог — Слово, який

одіваешся світлом наче ризою, преобразився перед

своїми учнями, та понад сонце, Ти Спасе, засіяв". На

6-ій пісні канона сказано: "Тебе пізнали славні

Апостоли як Бога на Фаворі, Христе, зчудувалися і

приклонили свої коліна".

Маючи перед очима славу Христового Божества,

Церква взиває своїх вірників, щоб духом вийшли на

гору Фавор і були свідками його переміни: "Прийдіть,

— каже литійна стихира — вийдім на гору Господню, у

дім Бога нашого, і побачимо славу його преображення,

славу як Єдинородного від Отця. Приймімо світло від

світла та піднесені духом, Трійцю Єдиносущну

прославмо на віки".
