The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Day of Obligation

Vigil Masses Wednesday, August 14 4:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.

Holy Day Masses Thursday, August 15

8:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.

The parish office will be closed for the Holy Day on Thursday, August 15.

In addition, Campus Ministry at Monmouth Universi-ty has made arrangements for Mass to be celebrated on this Holy Day of Obligation on-campus at 8:00 a.m. in the Withey Chapel in Wilson Hall.

Annual Summer Missionary Appeal

Please join us in welcoming Fr. Ronald Sibugan, a missionary priest who will be visiting our parish this weekend August 10-11 to present a mission appeal.

Father Ron is a member of a worldwide congrega-tion called Augustinians of the Assumption or the As-sumptionists. They were founded by Fr. Emmanuel d'Alzon in France in 1845. Their charism is education in all its forms including working in school settings, parishes, pilgrimages, publications, and many more. They are rendering their services in 32 coun-tries. Father Ron is originally from the Philippines. He has been part of the congregation for more than 14 years now. He did his for-mation studies at St. John’s Seminary in Boston and was ordained as a priest in 2014 (happy Fifth Anniversary, Father!). He is currently working as Campus Minister at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.

The proceeds of the August 10-11 Mission Appeal here at St. Michael’s will be applied to the Assumption-ists’ work in Mexico, East Africa, and the Philippines.

FEAST OF ST. CHRISTOPHER PATRON SAINT OF CAR SAFETY AND TRAVELERS

This Sunday, August 11 immediately after the 12:00 Noon Mass, the parish priests and Fr. Sibugan will be available in the North Parking Lot for all those who wish to have their cars blessed. Please park in the area near the garage and between the statues of St. Anthony and St. Michael and the priests will be there right after Mass for this blessing and a brief prayer.

St. Christopher Prayer: "The Motorist's Prayer"

Grant me O Lord a steady hand and watchful eye.

That no one shall be hurt as I pass by. Thou gavest life, I pray no act of mine

May take away or mar that gift of Thine. Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear me company,

From the evils of fire and all calamity. Teach me to use my car for others need; Nor miss through love of undue speed

The beauty of the world; that thus I may With joy and courtesy go on my way.

St. Christopher, holy patron of travelers, Protect me and lead me safely to my destiny.

Amen.

As part of the ongoing implementation of the Faith In Our Future (FIOF) efforts in our Diocese and in our Cohort 17, the parishes of Cohort 17 (St. Michael’s, Our Lady of Hope (the merged parishes of St. Jerome’s and St. Mary’s), Christ the King, Precious Blood, and St. Dorothea’s) have been celebrating a “Cohort Quarterly Mass” roughly every three months on a rotating basis at one of the churches within our Cohort. The next of these Quarterly Cohort Masses will be on the Solemnity of the Assumption (Thursday, August 15, a holy day of obligation) at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Deal. All are invited and welcome. Fr. Butler and Fr. Nillo will be concelebrating this Mass at St. Mary’s with other pastors and paro- chial vicars of Cohort 17. Immediate-ly following this Mass, all are invited to participate in St. Mary’s procession to the beach for the Annual Blessing of the Sea. Following the procession, all are also invited to return to the St. Mary’s Parish Hall for refreshments and fellowship and to socialize with our Cohort 17 neighbors.

The monthly Youth and Young Adults Mass will be suspended during the summer months of July and Au-gust and will resume in September. This Mass is ordi-narily celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Please follow the bulletin for further infor-mation about this Mass.

The Baptism preparation classes for parents are con-ducted every third Thursday of the month. There will be no class on Thursday, August 15 (because of that day’s Holy Day of Obligation-The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). The next class is September 19. Classes begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Church. Please call the Parish Office to register in advance.

*This $115,280 figure is approximately 105.7% of our parish goal. It was received during the first 25 weekends of the campaign (tallied as of August 6) from 309 pledgers or check-writing contributors (and many unidentified, un-quantified cash contributors) all of whom comprise ap-proximately 11.1% of the 2,798 registered households of the parish. Thank you! The ACA’s primary phase is now concluded at our parish although the books will re-main open for subsequent pledges and contributions and for the redemption of pledg-es. This is our parish’s sec-ond consecutive year reach-ing and exceeding its ACA goal and only the second time (including 2018) in the parish’s history and in the Appeal’s history that we have reached the goal. Again, thank you and congratula-tions and may God bless you.

Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA. Your contribution does make a difference! Please help. Please contribute. Please make a pledge.

The two “thermometers” above com-pare our parish’s 2018 vs. 2019 re-sults-to-date in the Annual Catholic Appeal. The thermometers indicate very good news. Collection basket donations the past three weekends and a substantial recent anonymous pledge have put the parish over our goal. Thank you and congratula-tions!

Pastor’s Note: In last Sunday’s bulletin we published the first half of an Instruction on the subject of cremation

and related matters that was promulgated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican in Rome. That Instruction has brought together in one document the Church’s teachings with respect to the crema-tion of Christian bodies for burial or entombment. The document was promulgated in August 2016. Published below is the second half of the Instruction as issued by Cardinal Gerhard Muller on behalf of the Congregation. It states the principles that apply and govern when we Catholics are considering, and making plans for, certain end-of-life matters especially when cremation is one of the considerations. Cardinal Muller’s letter is published here for the purpose of providing accurate, definitive, and reliable information on the Church’s teaching to ena-ble our knowledge to be well informed and our consciences to be well formed. If there are questions, please feel free to contact the parish priests for further guidance. Funeral directors in and around our area will be provided with a copy of this Instruction and a request that they advise their Catholic clients of these teachings of the Church if these topics become relevant during funeral planning. 4. “The Church continues to prefer the practice of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased. Nevertheless, cremation is not prohibited, “unless it was chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine”... In the ab-sence of motives contrary to Christian doctrine, the Church, after the celebration of the funeral rite, accompanies the choice of cremation, providing the relevant liturgical and pastoral directives, and taking particular care to avoid every form of scandal or the ap-pearance of religious indifferentism.

5. When, for legitimate motives, cremation of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority. From the earliest times, Chris-tians have desired that the faithful departed become the ob-jects of the Christian community’s prayers and remembrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflection. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes “in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church”. The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their fam-ily or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgot-ten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possi-ble, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away. Also it prevents any unfitting or superstitious practices.

6. For the reasons given above, the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted. Only in grave and exceptional cases dependent on cultural conditions of a localized nature, may the Ordinary, in agreement with the Episcopal Conference or the Synod of Bishops of the Oriental Churches, concede permission for the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence.

Nonetheless, the ashes may not be divided among various family members and due respect must be maintained regarding the circumstances of such a conservation.

7. In order that every appearance of pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided, it is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. These courses of action cannot be legitimized by an appeal to the sanitary, social, or economic motives that may have occasioned the choice of cremation.

8. When the deceased notoriously has requested cremation and the scattering of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of the law.”

The Sovereign Pontiff Francis, in the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 18 March 2016, approved the present Instruction, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congregation on 2 March 2016, and or-dered its publication. Rome, from the Offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 15 August 2016, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path…

Knowing when to say “yes” or “no” are lessons we all can use. Both allow us to take ownership of our lives, our beliefs and desires. It is ok to say “Yes”.

“We can learn to say yes to things that feel good, to what we want - for others and ourselves.

We can learn to say yes to fun. Yes to meetings, to call-ing a friend, asking for help.

We can learn to say yes to healthy relationships, to people and activities that are good for us.

We can learn to say yes to ourselves, what we want and need, our instincts, and the leading of our Higher Power. We can learn to say yes when it feels right to help some-

one. We can learn to say yes to our feelings. We can learn to identify when we need to take a walk, take a nap, have our back rubbed, or buy ourselves flowers.” Unknown

The PATHWAY TO HEAL is for those that need sup-port with life's new paths and journeys.

We are a ministry for separated, divorced and widowed persons.

If you need a place to come and feel safe please plan on attending our group.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, August 22nd at 7:00PM

St. Michael's Living Room 6 West End Court, Long Branch, NJ

Please Join Us. All Are Welcomed.

PARISHCOUNSELINGSERVICES A joint effort of the Diocese of Trenton and Catholic Charities provides licensed professionals for short term counseling (up to six sessions) to parishioners dealing with dif icult issues, for example, job-stress, family concerns, and bereavement. Contact your pastor or parish priest for additional information and referral. The fee is $90 per ses-sion, but, if needed, inancial assistance is available through the Diocese of Trenton Parish Counseling Services.

Communion Visits

Please keep in mind that the parish priests and our lay Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are availa-ble and eager to bring Com-munion to parishioners who are in the hospital (nursing homes, assisted living facil-

ities, rehab centers, and hospices, too) and to parish-ioners who are at home but unable to get to church. Please contact Mary Valan at the parish office or Dotty O'Hara at (908)310-6497 to make arrange-ments. Hospitals and other healthcare facili-ties generally do not notify the parish office regarding their Catholic patients who desire to receive Commun-ion. And so it falls to the patient herself/himself or to a family member or friend to contact the parish office to make the re-quest. The parish priests will also very gladly make a hospital visit or home visit to hear a Confession and/or administer the Sacrament of the Sick in addition to bringing Holy Communion. Please remember to contact the parish office or Dotty to make these arrangements. Thank you.

Eagles Up!

Eagles Up! would like to thank all who support our mission. Our latest shipment of food, toiletries, snacks, etc. to troops throughout the Middle East was on July 30,

2019. The total shipping expense for transporting these mate-rials was $1,551.60. Forty-nine boxes were shipped, 32 of which were large flat rate boxes.

There is no level to which we can thank our overseas mili-tary servicemen and servicewomen for our freedom. Each box Eagles UP! sends is filled with appreciation and a little piece of home. The following is a thank you note recently received by Eagles Up coordinator Toni Seinfeld. Good Day Toni,

I am confirming receipt of your most appreciated package. Thank you.

I have the pleasure of being a guest of the Kingdom until July 2020. It has been quite an emotional and physical roller coast-er ride. Coming up on my 33rd year of military service.

Our thanks for the continuing support from the good Ameri-cans at home. And a huge personal thanks to you for coordi-nating this massive undertaking.

Thank you from all in the unit. We truly appreciate your kind-ness. LCDR Logistics Department Head

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1) In life there are people whom we can and do help. Then there are people for whom nothing seems to work. Whether it is financial or emotional support, reaching out as a friend, listening and giving advice and lots of pray-er, nothing seems to stick. It can be most disheartening and even painful when we want noth-ing but goodness for another and achieve very little or nothing at all. When every conceiv-able effort has been exhausted, what then are we supposed to do?

I am sure many of you share this unhappy circumstance. But has it occurred to you that Jesus experienced the same? Who more than Jesus desired and did all He could for the best for others? And yet, many turned away from Him. There is no getting around it, there are hearts that even the Son of God did not reach, which is very, very sad. I am pretty sure this is one reason why Jesus wept so hard in the Garden of Gethsemane. He aches for those who are not helped by His efforts.

As God, with a wave of His hand Jesus might have solved every problem in the world for every person. He didn’t. Sure He cured many a sick person and fed thousands, but He didn’t eradicate disease, hunger, oppression or suffering. Obviously He did not come to save us from our difficul-ties except for one: how to achieve eternal happiness. That is not to say Christ does not want us to solve what we can, however. He came to show us how to live in a broken world with broken people so that healing and resolution might follow.

God’s ways are not man’s ways, but we should try to make His ways ours. So what did Jesus do with those whom we call “hopeless causes”? First, He never gave up. In the struggle against sin, Christ did resist to the point of shedding blood. We are never to give up hope. Next, He was obedient, which may strike you as odd, but it is key. Scripture never records Jesus expressing His opinion or compromising the truth to accommodate, rather, He came down to do the will of the One who sent Him. To be effective, we need to be faithful to Christ and His Church in all things, not just those of our choosing. It is then we can be a light in the darkness. Finally, Jesus loved others without judgment or measuring the personal cost to Himself. You might say He was always ready to wel-come any person who can accept His embrace by leaving their sin behind.

Whether it be a spouse, child, brother, sister or friend; for someone lost in the muck and mire caused by sin we must never stop trying to find a way to love them back as Christ did from whatever snare Satan has caught them in. It is not easy, it is not fun and we can only measure our success by what we do, not what the other receives. Further, it is not a cliché: Love, being the presence of God, is the last best hope of humankind.

Remember that no cause is lost so long as God can love through us. So take courage. St. Judas Thaddeus, St. Rita Cascia, St. Gregory Thaumaturgos, St. Philomena, saints of hope for hopeless causes, pray for us.
