are classified as frontier so colleges are taskedwith creating more on-line and distance trainingprograms allowing rural Montanans the opportunityto earn a one-year certificate or two-year degreewithout leaving their community. The grant is alsoinstrumental in creating the first formal healthcareapprenticeship training program in Montana. The grant targets adults including veterans, displaced workers, the unemployed, and theunderemployed to fill the approximately 1300healthcare positions available each year. A strongeconomy requires a talented and trained workforcewith the skills to fill the jobs that are most in demand, and this is especially true in Montanas growinghealth care industry, Governor Steve Bullock said ofthe grant.Currently, Montana two-year colleges offer at least31 two-year degrees and 20 one-year certificates in bothclinical and allied health occupations. Most healthcarecareers pay a higher wage than other occupationsthat require an equal length of training. According toThe Montana Department of Labor & Industry 2024Employment Projections, with a two-year associatesdegree the average annual wage for a Registered Nurseis $61,814; Dental Hygienist is $68,591; and RadiologyTechnician is $53,377. The average annual wage for aMedical Assistant is $31,263; Pharmacy Technicianis $33,408; and Dental Assistant is $33,202 which areone-year certificate programs. The HealthCARE Montana project is housedwithin the University of Montana and works inpartnership with the Montana Department of Laborand Industry and the Area Health Education Centers(AHEC) located in 5 regions throughout Montana.Staff working on the grant include Health CareTransformation Specialists who serve as liaisonsbetween the grant and their college; WorkforceCoordinators who serve as liaisons between the grantand healthcare employers, and Health ProfessionsCareer Coaches who work directly with students toidentify careers that fit the interest and lifestyle of thestudent, assist students to prepare for and/or enrollin the program of their choice, and help to seek outavailable financial aid and funding for the student.
