“From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two, two against

three.” We are bombarded with advertising that promise

products will make us feel better, look pret-tier, feel stronger, have an easier life and save money. Politicians are controlled by opinion polls and make promises they have no inten-tion to keep. In today’s Gospel Jesus paints a rather bleak picture of why he came, what he will do and the consequences he will suf-fer. He bluntly tells people that households will be divided because of him. An advertising agent or political adviser would tell Jesus he didn’t have a chance to sell his product or get elected. But Jesus was not running for office and the only product he was selling was the love of God and his Kingdom. Jesus knew his life and message had angered the Jewish and Roman leaders of his day. He anticipated the treatment he would eventually receive. And he knew we would be treated no better. He was preparing those who would follow him and try to imitate him for the treatment we would receive for seeking the will of God and trying to do it.

Patience is the virtue that most people find difficult to exercise. Whether it is waiting to get a cup of coffee in the morning or waiting to be the next one called in a doctor’s office, patience is something that we often lack. In a culture that runs non-stop, it is difficult to exercise patience. Yet, pa-tience is one of the keys in growing in the spiritual life. To remain calm in the difficulties of life, to remain at ease no matter what trou-bles arise we must grow in patience. St. Igna-tius of Loyola reminds people that in overcom-ing dryness in prayer, that one is to patiently wait for the Lord to work. Waiting for the Lord to work is a difficult thing to do. In order to do so well, we often must grow in two virtues. The virtues of hope and charity develops our ability to remain stead-fast in the Lord. To grow in hope, it is helpful to keep a list of all the good things that the Lord has done in our life. By keeping God’s ac-tions before us, we can grow in a radical hope. Likewise, a similar practice helps us to grow in charity. Charity is that virtue in which we are united to God in love. In order to grow in char-ity, it is helpful to surround ourselves with people who have our best intentions in mind. In surrounding ourselves with people who love us, we are more easily able to experience the love of God within our lives. When we grow in hope and charity, then we can remain calm in the difficult moments of prayer, and life. We will grow in patience and find that life is much easier to enjoy.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Knights of Columbus~Monsignor Peter Braun Council 17247 By Laura Shoulders

This past Wednesday, August 14, marks the 129th anniver-sary of the death of 38-year old Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. Born to poor, Irish-immigrant par-ents, he was one of 13 children. He left home to enter the seminary at age 16 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1877. He was assigned to St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecti-cut, during a time of severe anti-Catholic prejudice. Most of his parishioners were poor working class, many of them immi-grants themselves, who faced dangerous work conditions. The empathy and struggle he shared with his parishioners birthed his idea to begin a Catholic society to help strengthen faith and provide financial support to families in need. Founded in 1882, on the principles of charity, unity, and frater-nity, with the goal of uniting men of the Catholic faith and providing for the families of deceased members, today, the Knights of Columbus, has almost 2 million members and over 15,000 councils worldwide, with 374 of those councils being on college campuses. One of the newest councils of the Knights of Columbus is in our parish of Sts. Joseph & Paul, the Monsignor Peter Braun Council 17247. Shortly after its foundation, the council took a devastating blow when they lost their leader and Grand Knight, Barry Cecil. With a spirit of true brotherhood, the remaining members have vowed to see that Barry's dream lives on. Scott Ingram stepped up to assume the role of Grand Knight, and Mike Shoulders was nominated as Deputy Grand Knight. Other parishioners serve in the following Offices: Barry Strehl - Finan-cial Secretary, Chancellor - Jim Bailey, Recorder - Eric Humphrey, Treasurer - Ron Daugherty, Advocate - Beau Ingram, Warden - Chris Carrico, Inside Guard - Mack Pryor, Outside Guard - Jason Smith, Trustees - Steven Burch, Ben Strehl, Ryan Smith. Your Knights of Columbus council is working on some exciting things, and they are eager to give back to the community and our parish family. Last weekend they hosted the Men's Prayer Breakfast. They are donating money to help St. Vincent de Paul cover the deductible for the vandalism at their store a few weeks ago. In the future, you'll see a Rosary Stand in the church in memory of Barry Cecil. This fall should be exciting as they're planning to host a Cruise In Car Show and Burgoo sale as fundraisers. They also plan to partner with Precious Blood's Knights of Columbus on their coat drive and sausage sale. Historically and globally, the Knights of Columbus have been instrumental agents for change.

The Knights of Columbus is dedicated to the Pro-Life movement and March for Life. Since 2009, the Knights have funded 950+ ultrasound machines at pregnancy care centers in all 50 states. The K of C’s goal is to reach 1,000 machines by 2019. If each machine saves the lives of just four unborn children each week, the Knights will have saved more than 1 million lives.

The Knights have been a major supporter of the Special Olympics since the very first games, and have raised and donated more than $600 million and 4 million volunteer hours to the Special Olympics.

At the peak of the Ku Klux Klan’s power, the K of C stood as its most vigorous opponent. In one incident in 1924, hooded Klansmen abducted, severely beat and mutilated Fr. John Conoley in Gainesville, Florida. Knights armed with shotguns stood in the windows of the rectory, protecting another priest and the church itself from the Klan’s threats to burn it.

Patriotism is the fourth pillar of the K of C, following the founding principles of charity, unity, and fraternity. The Knights were instrumental in lobbying for the words “under God” to be added to the Pledge of Allegiance. And did you know that both the first American and the last American to fall in World War I were Knights of Colum-bus?

Babe Ruth, Vince Lombardi and President John F. Kennedy were all members of the Knights. Several Knights have already been declared saints, and Knights founder, Fr. McGivney, is a candidate for sainthood. His cause for canonization is open, and he was given the title “Venerable Servant of God” by the Holy See in 2008.

The Monsignor Braun Council 17247 currently has 25 members, and both Fr. Kalombo and Fr. Will are Knights. If you are a practicing Catholic man 18 years of age or older who is interested in joining the Knights of Columbus, or a member of another council who is interested in transferring membership to Sts. Joseph & Paul, find one of the men listed above at Sun-day Mass, or call the office for contact information. We look forward to witnessing how the presence and charity of our Knights will strengthen our parish family. information obtained from "What You Don't Know about the Knights of Columbus", www.kofc.org

Handmade Knotted Cord Rosaries For Sale Made by Alyssa Frey, will be available for donations after all masses on August 25th. (while supplies last). Proceeds will benefit our high school youth attending NCYC.
