A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

Last week, I announced in this column that we will be making some pretty significant changes in the weekend Mass schedule here at MQOA. To be honest, I was worried about the response. I’ve been in the position of having to make changes like this in parishes, and have seen people react to change with discouragement, or even anger. I know that these changes are important for the growth of our parish, but I also know how hard they can be to accept — and I do understand that Mass times matter to each person in our pews every week. I want to stress that we are cutting back to grow stronger. In the Gospel of John, Jesus said this: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it will be even more fruitful. ...No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” (JN 15:1-4) We are pruning to be able to bear more, and better, fruit. I am hoping that changing the schedule will allow us to be stronger and more welcoming as a parish. And, if we look around, we can see that there is already growth. In the past year the number of baptisms has grown to outnumber the funerals. Yearly, we host 20-22 weddings, and the num-ber of people attending Mass overall has increased (particularly at the noon and the 6:30 PM Sun-day Masses). Our collection totals have been improving, our Catholic Appeal efforts were success-ful, and we are continuing to pay off the parish’s debts, while at the same time maintaining and repairing the churches and buildings. We have had an increase in First Communions, Adult Baptisms and Confirmations. We have a new youth program on Friday nights, and our wedding ministry continues to grow. In other good news, I’m happy to announce that we have added another full-time profession-al minister to our team, with our new music director Mr. David Colpitts. David will be working with all our musicians to continue offering inspiring music at all our Masses, including the Spanish Mass, as he speaks (and sings) Spanish. We hope to have more and more people involved in the music program across the new Mass Schedule. In addition to these good signs of growth, we can point with great pride to the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They serve many of the very vulnerable among us, and work to keep peo-ple off the streets due to poverty or sudden loss of work or the many other challenges that those on the margins face every day. We also have made great strides in evangelizing and healing. We have a team of ministers who are trained to pray for people at our monthly healing services and by appointment. We are slowly helping the parish to recognize that these gifts exist among us and need to be called forth, nurtured, strengthened and used for the good of those who are hurting in any way. Alpha continues to grow here at MQOA, and is the “front door” through which we invite more people to a relationship with Jesus and into our parish. This year, with the help of many energetic and talented people, we will begin the ministry year with three Alpha sessions: one in English, one in Spanish, and one for teenagers. I’ve seen new faces and old friends with renewed hearts come through Alpha and I believe it is a powerful tool for sharing the Good News. Some have asked, by the way, why we don’t just bring in another priest to share the workload with me. We’ve been hearing for years about the decreasing number of priests in the Archdiocese and in the Church at large, and now we are seeing the reality of that in our own parish. We cannot have another priest assigned to us at this time, and fewer and fewer priests are available to assist in parishes, like Fr. Jay was able to do. I ask you to pray for an increase in priestly vocations— and to encourage your family members to consider the priesthood as a future for them-selves. I want you to know that we would never make changes lightly, or without considering all the possible options. I hope (and truly believe) that you and I will find that our new schedule will indeed bear fruit in the parish, despite the pain that comes from pruning. Peace, Fr. Murray

Paz, P. Murray

ALPHA RETURNS TO MQOA IN SEPTEMBER

Do the changing seasons have you wondering...is there more to life than this? Is there a God? Can I have faith? Treat yourself to an opportunity to ask all these questions and more… at Alpha. Alpha is a series of dinner meetings with conversation about the big questions in life. You can bring your doubts, discouragement, curiosity, and questions to the table and enjoy deep, honest, and judgment-free conversations with other adults. The food is amazing, the people are warm and welcoming, and everything is free.

Alpha has been described by our guests as “the antidote for Catholic guilt” and “the opposite experience of CCD.”

AN MQOA ALPHA GUEST SAYS: “...our group had a profoundly positive experience here...the sharing, the questions, the funny stories and the painful moments too, all make Alpha a wonderful experience of the Church at its very best!”
