+ Padre’s Corner August 19, 2018 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus walked extensively outdoors during His three years of public ministry. The locations of Samaria, Jordan River, Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, Garasenes, and the Garden of Gethsemane were amongst those touched by His human feet with frequency. Scripture scholars composing a Biblical map of His travels have ascertained that these missionary walks by Jesus generally were within a radius of 100 miles. The walkways and seaside locations that He visited were places of solitude and public interaction. The beauty of the world that God the Father created was a constant presence in His movements, despite the ugliness of human nature in various circles that opposed Him. Jesus must have been in great physical shape from all of this walking, one of the best types of exercise for any of us, with an acute mental proclivity that was deeply engaged with the physical and emotional world that abutted Him. This travel is a reminder to each person of the spiritual need to get out there to engage with the world instead of being bound by the warped world of solitary exile in a chair to the fake zone of television entertainment solely. Walks on nature trails, along seashores, through neighborhoods, on mountain tops, around stadiums, and anywhere else we desire to observe expand our worldwide view and remove us from the myopic world of self-imposed excessive introspection. I have quite fond memories of walking as a young boy in the late 1960’s with my father, who was trying to break an addiction to nicotine with the assistance and help of walking therapy. I was all ears anytime he wanted me to walk with him, much like my buddy Moondoggie is when I ask if he wants to take a walk. His body action makes it obvious that there is never going to be a no with the invitation to go outside to engage with the neighborhood with a walk. Not only does outside exercise like walking clear the mental cobwebs, but helps with weight loss. Jesus knew this very well. This engagement with the outdoor realm also allows us to bring a message of truth and hope to others. Even professional athletes and those administering such leagues of teams realize this dimension, more so with baseball and football than hockey (though the Winter Classics of recent years are outdoor arena events in quite frigid temperatures) and basketball. Angelo Bartlett “Bart“ Giamatti was born on April 4,1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. The former president of Yale University and the National League, Bart became the seventh commissioner of Major League Baseball on April 1, 1989. His Italian immigrants came to America circa 1900. A doctorate in literature created a man of letters and prose that could use the written word to inspire and educate others (which is the purpose of a homily at Mass). Only 154 days later this man destined for commissioner greatness, focused on combining the best of tradition and entertainment for fans, was felled by a fatal heart attack on September 1 while vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. He was only 51 years old. In a book entitled “Take Time For Paradise : Americans And Their Games”, Giamatti ( whose son is the actor Paul) opined these gently moving words on the game and life: “Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the Spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the Summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the Fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops”. He wrote in the “Hartford Courant“ on April 15, 1984: “On matters of race, on matters of decency, baseball should lead the way”. On a sunny afternoon this past April 4, the day he was born, I was at Yankee Stadium. Stanton, Judge, and Sanchez powered the Bronx Bombers to a 7-2 victory over the lowly Tampa Bay Rays. I journeyed to the baseball diamond with an interesting family. The father once worked for Major League Baseball, taking photographs of all the players and coaches during the late 1970’s for security badges and Topps baseball cards. The sounds of the game, cracked bats and whizzing baseballs, punctuated the high skies that pointed to our Heavenly Father above. Jesus in the Holy Trinity reminds us one and all that the playing fields of life are preparations for eternity, where there is no more painful deaths or struggles. Life here below, as Jesus would attest to, is not easy and often complex. It can be like a grueling football game on a grim wintry day. Carl Eller, who I met exactly one year ago today at a sports show at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, played for the “Purple People Eaters“ defensive front line of the Minnesota Vikings during their four Super Bowl appearances in the early 1970’s. About those tough playing fields at the razed Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington he reflected: “ I think it gave us psychologically an advantage. We just felt like we were together.“ Jim Marshall of that same line added “... it’s the way football to me was meant to be played, outdoors, surviving the elements while playing the game. “ Art imitates life and faith. Whatever curveballs or snowballs life throws our way in prayer, sacraments, and our faith we prevail in strength through Him

TODAY TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understanding to forsake foolishness and “advance in the way of understanding.” Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God’s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread he planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was his flesh, which he would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not understand, but Jesus reassures them that his flesh is real food and that “those who feed on this bread shall live forever.”
