“SIMPLY SUCCESS”You may remember my last Ravings about how a simple projectlike changing tires on an old woods trailer can turn into anightmare o problems. O course at your age … you may notremember!!

I had concluded with the words o wisdom “Persistence caneven overcome stupidity”. So being persistent, I developed mynext idea. Cut out the center hub o the wheels that came o theold trailer. Next cut out the center hub o the new wheels to goon the trailer. Finally, weld the old hubs to the newer rims “EtVoila”. Several hours o cutting and welding and I am ready orthe nishing touches. I had removed the tires rom my newerrims beore doing the welding since I didn’t want to have themgo up in smoke beore my very eyes. And, I also wanted to cleanup any rust that was lurking inside that might cause problems.

So, on a sunny and hot Saturday morning I am ready. Get tireone partially installed on my modied rim, slip in the new innertube I had picked up, nish installing tire, start adding air, starcursing as I hear air leaking out, add more air, do more cursing!Remove tire and tube, nd a cut in my new tube and decide tomove on to tire two. Steps 1, 2 and 3 are perect. Start addingair, start watching in dismay as the short valve stem slips backinside the tire, start removing tire but can’t break it back downbecause the air already in the tube is holding it in place. Hotsweaty and very cranky (I know … I sound like the missus), Itake a long thin screw driver and puncture the inner tube torelease the pressure!!

Decide that either a tire or mysel is going to explode i Icontinue and wisely decide to wait or another day.

Te next day, patch inner tubes, repeat installation proceduresadd air, SUCCESS, so simple!!Mounting the rims on the old trailer went pretty smoothly and

there they are, painted a re engine red, they look wonderul!!Now, I will be very surprised i my welding eorts happen to

let go!! Indeed, depending on where and when the welds ail, Imay be more than surprised!! Caution Please!! DO NO makethese modications to your amily van!! Do NO modiy therims o Aunt Lizzie’s 1967 Valiant, no matter how cool it wouldlook with 20” tires!! 800

OFF WIH HEIR HEAdS ANd ON WIH HESHOWOne o the most satisying jobs in the garden is that o ‘deadheading’, with the prousion o blooms that we are now enjoyingit becomes a vital act i the pleasure is to continue. All annualsand a great many perennials benet rom having the dead owerheads removed as soon as possible aer their demise, a pair o sharp scissors usually suces, though secateurs might be bestor lilacs and woody bushes. Te goal o a blooming plant is not,as we might ondly assume, to give us great joy, but to ensure thesurvival o the species. Clearly, i the plant is thwarted by havingthe potential seed decapitated beore ully ormed, it will need tokeep on producing owers, ever hopeul o an outcome o riperuit; thus extending the blooming period beyond the time thatan untended plant would bloom.

Roses require the spent bloom to be cut o just above the nextlea junction to produce new buds, though there are many thatwill continue to bloom until aer the rst rost. Tose that arenot ‘repeat bloomers’ can be le to produce rose hips, great or areally benecial and tasty jelly, or simply to leave or birds to eatover the unmentionable season to come!Lilac bushes do seem to benet rom having their spent owers

removed and it’s a good practice to prune the bushes at the sametime; however great care needs to be taken beore pruning any bushes until aer the birds have raised their amilies, intentionalobservation regarding bird activity is essential i we are tomaintain the wonderul diversity o bird lie that we are blessedwith. Not only are our eathered riends a joy to hear and to see,but they provide quite the best method o insect control that it’s

possible to get, non-toxic and totally without cost, seems that we‘have the best o all possible worlds’.

While on that subject, it’s a good practice to cut down any undergrowth rom below bird eeders, clear ground or mowed

vegetation, have a double advantage o allowing a great view o the ‘show’ and reducing the hiding places or marauding elines.

Tis article started with the concept that ‘dead heading’ is oneo the most satisying gardening experiences. It provides anopportunity to be really grateul or the beauty that surroundsus, so oen taken or granted, with each snip o the cutters aprayer o thanks can be oered, and a joy remembered; saveup the images o the glorious blossoms in your mind to re visitduring the ‘unmentionable season’. 805

GOSHEN 171S ANNIVERSARY SERVICEOn Sunay, August 14th at 3:00pm the Goshen United BaptistChurch will celebrate its 171st anniversary service. Te guestspeaker or this service will be Rev. Greg Jones, area minister, romQuispamsis.Tis little white wooden church, nestled in the good land o Goshen

in Albert County, has had services since 1860 in this building. Tepump organ is still in use and the seats are still hard and straight, according to today’s standards, but that did not bother the settlerswho put so much eort into constructing it o such heavy beams. At one time there were doors on each pew; maybe they helpedto keep the children “in their place” when amilies were so large.Te pulpit still in use was built by a ormer pastor. Tere is nowelectricity but in those days only a Goshen breeze would cool thecongregation. Te ladies must have suered in the summer heatwith those billowing long dark dresses! Men wore suits - or at leasttheir best - with a hat, suspenders and vest, no doubt. It was a timeto meet with your neighbours and catch up on the news since travelwas dicult and arms oen spread apart.

Some settler names rom long ago in this area are Hayward,DeMille, Jonah, Babcock, Geldart, Blakney and Graves - names onthe stones in the surrounding cemetery.

Parking was no problem. Tere wasn’t any need o a parking lot,

just a place or the horses to stand and patiently wait, and at onetime there was a shed or that purpose. Many older churches haveallen into disrepair, been turned into a cottage, or only have annualservices. We still meet every other Sunday in the building except inthe colder winter months.

I you would like the experience o an old-ashioned churchsetting, please join us! 835

HE GIFI have had my Musings or this issue written in my head orseveral days, but had not yet taken the time to actually put it onpaper. My topic, the 80/20 rule, something I had never heard o until I was in business, but had unknowingly been using in my lie or many years. Te 80/20 rule is a principle that 20 percento something is always responsible or 80 percent o the results,or the law o the “vital ew and trivial many”. In business, thatmay be that 80 percent o your sales come rom 20 percent o your customers. In lie, as I would model to my daughter toclean her room, it can look 80 percent better once 20 percent o the work is done! Te trick o course is identiying the proper 20percent to tackle. It applies to weeding the ower garden (ocuson the BIG weeds rst). It applies to . . . well, you get the picture.I had lots o stories I could use, some unny, some not so much.

Ten I picked up the book . . .Tose who know me will tell you I devour books. I am oneo those people who will stay up to all hours because I NEEDto nish the current book. Not this one. I pick it up and read achapter and have to put it down. I read it with a kleenex in my hand at all times, as each chapter will move me to tears, and Iam not a weepy type. Each time I open it I receive a punch to my gut. So why do I continue? Because it is a book about not justsurviving, but triumphing. It is book written by a woman whoor three years was the national president o MADD Canada. It is the story o her personal loss o her son, and the stories o other amilies who have experienced loss and injury because o impaired driving. We all hear the news stories. Tis book picksup where those end. Tese are the stories o the amilies in those

news stories. And though each delivers that punch in the gut, each also celebrates lie.

Mike and I walk the woods regularly. Tere are trees whichhave been severely altered by an experience at some earlier pointin their lives, but that have nevertheless grown tall and beautiul.I have always admired their strength and resilience, their ability to triumph over adversity. Te amilies in this book are likethose trees. Te book is called “Te Gi: A MADD Mother’sJourney o Healing” by Margaret Miller. It would be awesomei it were required reading or every person looking to get adrivers’ license. 801
