Victoria’s automotive community update...

Car enthusiasts and their families will gather this Sunday at Queen Alexandra Centre grounds in support of the centre’s fundraising efforts for Jeneece Place.

Organized by the Vancouver Island Region of the Porsche Club of America, European and classic cars will gather from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2400 Arbutus Rd. in a celebration geared toward helping children and their families.

All European and classic cars are encouraged to attend – vehicle registration is $20 and includes a dash plaque for the first 225 cars. Spectator admission to the picnic is by donation to the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children.

In addition to a magnificent display

of automobiles, activities at the car picnic include wandering magicians and magic shows at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., a barbecue, face painting, tattoos, a bouncy castle, an Imagination Station craft station, Tom Thumb Safety Village pedal cars and a silent auction.

Car owners will compete for the Best in Show, People’s Choice and Kid’s Choice awards. Everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic lunch so they may be included in the voting for the Best Picnic at the Picnic.

All funds raised at the car picnic support Jeneece Place, a project of the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children and the dream of 17-year-old

Jeneece Edroff. Jeneece and her family have often used the services of Ronald McDonald House while she underwent surgeries at BC Children’s Hospital and Jeneece saw the need for something similar in Victoria.

Jeneece Place will offer a home away from home for families of children and youth travelling to Victoria for medical care.

The days of manually adding air to under-inflated tires could be a distant memory thanks to a new innovation under development in laboratories at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

Keeping tires properly inflated doesn’t just eliminate the practice of checking a tire’s air pressure and finding a tire pump and gauge that works.

It also can mean real savings at the fuel pump.

Whether you drive a passenger vehicle or a commercial truck, underinflated tires result in between a 2.5-per-cent and 3.3-per-cent-decrease in fuel mileage, according to government and industry research.

Goodyear’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) will enable tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics.

All components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire.

Goodyear did not provide an estimate as to when this technology would be available at tire retailers, but said the timetable would be accelerated due to recent government research grants in U.S. and European Union.

Audi has announced the Audi urban concept, a 1+1-seat, an ultra-light car for congested urban spaces.

It combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept.

The Audi urban concept car is not descended from any previous model – its development is based on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction.

There is room for two people on board, their position slightly staggered and at a sporty, low level. All controls and materials are subject to the dictates of ultra-lightweight construction to ensure they convey a unique, sensory allure.

The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals for his or her own driving position. Entry to the car is through the tailgate, while the roof is designed to be maneuverable and slides to the rear to open. The Audi urban concept rides on 21-inch wheels.

The technology in the Audi urban concept reflects the full capabilities of the brand, especially when it comes to ultra-lightweight construction.

The cockpit consists of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats.

Two e-tron electric motors provide the propulsion – providing the ultra-light Audi urban concept with the ability to accelerate powerfully.

A lithium-ion battery supplies the energy – ideal for extended city tours.

There is a new model hitting the road this summer – or, more accurately, setting sail – and this creation doesn’t even require batteries.

Truly harnessing the “power of nature,” a Nissan-built catamaran soon will be sailing high in the Danish ocean, the latest non-automotive design and development project by Nissan Design America, based in San Diego, California.

The boat’s composite structure was designed and built entirely in-house.

Improving all aspects of aero- and hydro-dynamics, the team looked at every piece, achieving cleaner, smoother form and surface that are efficient to add competitive edge.

In creating the boat, the Mexicali modeling team was able to gain valuable experience and knowledge with new materials, spraying techniques and model finish applications and learned how to achieve more accurate models, as well as new techniques and processes.

NDA’s Mexicali facility opened in March 2009 and handles design model milling, surface data processing, painting and shop work.

It’s that time of the year again when children are gearing up and heading back to school. It’s also a great time for road users to brush up on their safety tips.

Drivers need to be proactive and make sure they are familiar with their road sense and basic rules of the road.

DriveWise has prepared a list of tips to keep children safe during this busy time of the year.

• School Zones – Make sure you are aware of the school zones in your area and be sure to

abide by them at all times. If there is a 30 km/hour sign attached, you must go 30 km/hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during school days. If there isn’t a speed limit assigned, you must slow your speed when children are present.

• Watch for school buses – If the bus has alternating flashing red lights at the top, you must stop, whether you are approaching it from the front or rear.

• Practice your ground viewing techniques – This is a life-saving skill for all drivers to know. When approaching parked vehicles, scan under the cars, watching for feet of children, animals,

bicycles etc.• Pay attention at ALL times! Distracted

driving is a hot topic right now and contributes to many crashes. Driving when distracted around a school zone or area with many children can be deadly. Don’t drive while distracted, espe-cially near school zones.

• Keep your speed down in general – September is a busy month, kids are walking to and from school, are excited about the new school year and possibly not paying as much attention as they should be. It’s up to us to be watching out for them… expect the unexpected!

Subaru XV to make world premiere at Frankfurt Motor Show


Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., parent company of Subaru Automobiles, has confirmed the world production premiere of the all-new Subaru XV (European specification) at the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show, Sept. 13 to 25.

The Subaru XV defines a whole new generation of Subaru crossover vehicle.

The concept version of the XV received a warm welcome when it was first shown at the Auto Shanghai motor show in April, its design successfully combining the latest distinctive Subaru elements with the commanding silhouette expected of a crossover.

The final production version of the XV remains true to the Concept and Subaru is confident that it will bring something fresh, as well as a new level of engineering excellence, to the segment.

While utilizing the latest in navigation technology, “The Ultimate Drive” still remains simple in nature and nearly effortless to use to its full potential – after downloading the app, the user allows the app to find their location and then it displays the stretches of road which others have contributed as the best ones in the area. Conversely, when the user has generated their own favourite stretch, it is as easy as three taps to share via email or Facebook or send to one’s favorite GPS device or app.

VICtOrIa At the TrackWeekend of Mayhem thrills to Western Speedway fans

It was a double night of racing action at Western Speedway this past weekend, when the local track welcomed four classes of demo racers.

In addition to competitive racing by the Bombers, Demo Cars, Demo Trucks and Mini Figure 8s, Friday night audiences enjoyed the thrills of a school bus race, while six entrants took to the track with a boat in tow for a Saturday night race. Fans were treated both nights

to a exciting car jump by the Crazy Canuck, visiting from the Mainland.

Coming up this week at the track is one of the season’s favourite events, the Daffodil Cup featuring Sprint Cars and Sprint Lites.
