Forty Days of Awein the midst of summer routine, August brings us to our annual season of reflection and repentance. The Hebrew month of Elul, the last of the current Jewish year, begins August 10 and 11. it is a time to look back upon our deeds as we look forward to the coming new year for our lives.

Midrash imagines that the forty days during which Moses was atop Mt. Sinai were from the first day of Elul through Yom Kippur. Forty days in God’s presence. Forty days to receive Torah. Forty days to establish the measure by which all of our days have meaning.

Moses’ experience is also our opportunity. During the forty days of awe we wonder how we, too, may live in God’s presence. We prepare for Rosh

HaShanah and Yom Kippur by setting some goals, picking an area for growth or change in our personal lives, and in our patterns of Jewish celebration.

God is present in our emotions and abilities, in our relationships and community, when we learn new things, and honestly come to understand something deeper about who we are and hope to be. As summer ends and a new year begins, may we use these forty days of awe to plan for a year of goodness and renewal.

B’Shalom Rav,

Rabbi Ron Shulman
