1. A new music director is coming! Jerry Long has

been hired to be Trinity’s part-time music director. Jerry

and his wife Annetta live in Gray. They have twin sons.

One son and his family live in Johnson City; the other

son and his family live in Roanoke.

Jerry Long is coming to us from Centenary UMC

in Erwin. Around mid-August he will begin rehearsing

with our various music groups, and his first Sunday here

in worship will be September 5. Jerry and Annetta look

forward to coming to Trinity and using music to glorify

God and help fulfill our mission of making disciples of

Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

2. The Building Committee is planning to meet

with an architect in the next few days to discuss install-

ing an elevator which can reach every floor in our build-

ing. But until our facility becomes handicap accessible

everywhere, the Church Council has approved a request

by the Journey Sunday School class. Until an elevator is

built, they will hold their S.S. class in the Small Fellow-

ship Hall (SFH) on any Sunday that it is not reserved for

another use.

The Journey class has some members who can

no longer attend because they cannot climb the stairs.

Journey will still keep their room upstairs so they can

meet there on any Sunday morning that the SFH has

been reserved for a shower, party, or other event. But

the SFH is available on most Sundays, so on those days

Journey may use that space to meet so that every mem-

ber of their class can attend.

and Children. While he has worked hard, SPRC recog-

nizes that ministry with children is extremely different

What is a tithe-based apportionment?

Starting January 1, the Holston Conference will begin a new apportionment formula.

In 2011, all Holston churches will fund the conference budget through a tithe (a tenth).

This new formula was approved by a strong majority last month at

Annual Conference.

Each month, we will give 10% of all undesignated local church giving to support the

conference budget. Whatever undesignated donations we receive each month, we will

send in 10%. This formula is easy to figure and is based on the Bible. As individuals,

God calls us to give 10% of our income back to Him, so as congregations,

we will tithe our local church giving to Holston.

Also, starting January 1, the conference will directly bill each local church for the cost

of a pastor’s pensions and health insurance. These costs will no longer be included in

the conference budget.
