Around the NorthlandLeadership Program Creates Business Opportunities Meredyth Melcher, president of Dyllan Construction in Riverside, Mo., had lived in and out of Kansas City her whole life. It wasn’t until she found herself once again back in Kansas City and working for a construction company that she realized her moving around all of those years actually became a business burden. “Back then I was really lousy at networking, and I didn’t have the connections that other business owners had with my absence in previous years,” Melcher says. Melcher turned to the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce to get more involved. She applied for the Chamber’s Leadership Northland program—designed to educate local professionals in leadership and in the community. “Education has always been important to me, but mostly I applied for the program to familiarize myself with the community and meet new people,” Melcher says. Following the kick-off retreat, the program consisted of a series of educational sessions all with different themes, and all hosted by different community leaders, with one community service project. “We had sessions with hospital administrators, superintendents, the Mayor and community-based charities,” Melcher says. She has implemented much of what was taught directly into her business. For example, she was able to identify her target market. “I learned that Northland as a community is very loyal,” Melcher says, “and Northlanders generally prefer doing business with other Northlanders rather than with Kansas City businesses.” With that newfound information Melcher now targets all of her marketing to Northland residents—where her business is located—and has found more success. She also implemented one of the team-building exercises from the program. The exercise is designed to identify important personality traits (by color) in group settings, provide tools to recognize those traits and ways to work best, given the individual’s unique characteristics. “Since facilitating the team-building exercise at my company, the communication skills among myself and my employees has improved drastically,” Melcher says. “We work better as a team and, as a result, produce better work.” And then there is the confidence instilled in Melcher since having completed the program. “I would have never met the people I needed to meet in order to serve on these community groups had I not been involved in the Leadership Northland program,” Melcher says.Reprint courtesy of National Association of the Remodeling Industry. From Roofline to High-Speed Interstate MoDOT recycles roof shingles to create smoother, safe roads . After a stormy spring, dumpsters full of shingles await their fate in the landfill. But a transportation department recycling program gives unusable roofing material a new job - pavement. The Missouri Department of Transportation was among the first state agencies in the nation to recycle shingles to resurface or rebuild highways, and this month, many of Kansas City’s routes will include asphalt mixtures with recycled shingles. Since 2005, MoDOT has used enough recycled shingles to roof 36,474 houses, but keeping materials out of landfills is only one aspect of the program. This conservation effort also reduces the amount of petroleum the department needs in asphalt mixes. This summer, several routes will receive the shingle asphalt mix, including I-470, I-70, Route 50, Route 13 and Route 169. This is just one of several recycling efforts for MoDOT. Others include: Each year, MoDOT recycles more than 7,000 light bulbs from traffic signals, street lights and office buildings - enough to light 155 homes. When striping Missouri’s highways, MoDOT uses 10 million pounds of recycled glass beads. Since 2005, MoDOT has recycled 256,250 tires for construction projects - enough to equip 64,063 cars For more information recycling or any of MoDOT projects, please visit MoDOT’s Website at www.modot.mo.gov/kansascity. For instant updates, follow MoDOT_KC on Twitter, be a friend on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MoDOT.KansasCity or send questions and comments to [email protected].

Brew Festival Suds Up at Zona RosaWhether you prefer amber or pales, ryes or stouts, the 3rd Annual UNICO Brew Festival at Zona Rosa will serve more than 60 brews from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. The Brew Festival, a first-of-its-kind event at Zona Rosa, is a production of UNICO, Kansas City’s Italian-American service organization. The cost is $25 at the event or attendees may purchase advance tickets for $20 at the Zona Rosa guest services office. The price of admission includes a commemorative sampling glass which can be used for beers on tap, live music and custom tasting notes.

Summit Publications, Inc. Announces New LookSummit Publications is pleased to announce a new, colorful cover design featuring a beautiful scenic photograph. The change was implemented after Market Authority, an independent research group, conducted a series of extensive studies in the Greater Kansas City area. The study found that consumers prefer a directory that is visually appealing, which often leads them to keep it longer and use it more than similar products. Although the former, predominately white cover has changed, the small size, format, community-focus, up-to-date listings and advertising inside will continue to include the top-quality information that area business owners and residents have come to expect. For more information, please contact Summit Publications at 816-628-5492.

Thank you to everyone who attended the July 18th Ford Luncheon. Martin Malloy, Vice President, Labor Affairs, shared some very good information about labor policy and negotiations covering the company’s hourly employees worldwide. Stay tuned for the next lunch at the Chamber!Gov. Nixon Delivered Major Policy AddressOn Thursday, July 21, Governer Jay Nixon addressed an audience to deliver a major policy. This policy was on business development strategies and initiatives to help create jobs, promote growth in the high-tech sector, and leverage Missouri’s competitive advantages in a global economy. This is very good news for the Northland and will offer many new job opportunities for businesses.A-1 Staffing Branches Change to Spartan StaffingFour former A-1 Staffing branches in the Kansas City area are now Spartan Staffing offices following the acquisition of the Overland Park-based company by TrueBlue Inc., a leading provider of blue-collar staffing. Like A-1, Spartan provides labor for light and skilled industrial work, as well as some clerical and trade positions.
