CONQUEST OF
MALACCA FINAL
WINTER DANCE PHOTOS SPRING DANCE
Dear Members Welcome to this special edition of our Newsletter giving highlights of our own celebration of the 500 anniversary of the Portuguese Landing in Ma-lacca and also the celebrations organised by the Malacca Portuguese Eurasian Association in Oc-tober 2011. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Malacca in October, don’t hesitate to visit the Por-tuguese Settlement and enjoy the many events that have been planned to commemorate this milestone in the history of Eurasians who originated in Malacca.
Thank you to all members and guests who attended our July lunch de-spite the bitter cold winds that were blowing that morning. It did not take long to warm up as friends and family got together and shared laughter and love and the delicious comfort food that was on offer that day. A big thank you to the cooks and helpers – such high standards as always. We are also always blessed to have so many generous and tal-ented musicians and artists who willingly entertain us at our lunches and a special thank you to Clifford Sequerah and the many singers who delighted us with our favourite songs. Good food, good music, great company – one could not ask for more!
Our Masquerade Winter Dance was so much fun especially the parade of masks! Again, it is always a happy time when friends get together to relax and throw in some good work out while enjoying their favourite dances. Some were so relaxed and in such high ‘spirits’, the party con-tinued at home! We are so grateful to Margaret, Valerie, Joan and the rest of the functions committee and their helpers for putting in so much effort to ensuring that a good time was had by all who came to the dance. A job well done!
A lot of organisation and work will be going into our celebratory lunch on Sunday 14 August and I invite you to dress up in your national dress as we celebrate the unique heritage and culture of all Eurasians. It will be an opportunity to showcase the Eurasian heritage and culture to our younger generation especially those who were born in Australia. We are proud to be both Eurasian and Australian but it is always important to remember our roots and the sacrifices made by generations before us. I hope to see many of you at the August lunch.
Ten Pin bowling will take place after the lunch and I am sure we will all need the exercise after partaking in dishes like Curry Devil, Feng, Se-bak and of course finishing off the meal with Buboh Trigoo, just what the doctor ordered! It is a once in a lifetime celebration so I think the doctor will forgive us!
Look after yourselves and I hope you are smiling. It many be difficult if you are sneezing or coughing but laughter is the best medicine and soon Spring will be upon us and will help to dispel the melancholy that winter sometimes brings.

WINTER DANCE—Masquerade Night A night of mystery and glamour
as masked members and guests danced to the rhythms of "Hot,
Hot, Hot". A band that kept everyone moving and a groov-ing. Our talented members,
Heather Fitzgerald, Elvis (Aka Victor Papineau) and Michael
Chowdhurie added to the enter-tainment with their renditions of special songs. The highlight of
the evening was the best mask competition. The variety of
masks were colourful, sparkling and creative making it very competitive and just amazing to
watch. The best male mask was won by the "Devil" himself Dennis Arklie as he strutted his devilish appeal to an applauding audience. The best female mask went to Mrs Alan Agar - a
guest with a golden feathered mask. Raffles and door prizes made it a fun, entertaining evening. Photos of the evening are on our club website. Please do check it out. The sub-
committee wishes to thank members and guests for their support and special thanks to those members who gave up their Saturday afternoon to come help set up the hall.
Regards—Margaret, Valerie and Joan

Conclusion to the Capture of the City – 24 August 1511
No further resistance took place in the city. The Peguans were the first to ask for-and receive- pardon. They were soon followed by the Javanese and Hindus. As for the Sultan, he and is son ‘Ala’u’d-din who had taken a notable part in the defence, fled inland. ‘Ala’u’d-din tried to make a stand at Pagoh; but was driven out by the brothers Andrade and some Javanese, and fled with his father to Pahang, whither the Sultan of Pahang had long since preceded them. Only a few Malays under the redoubtable Laksamana, Hang Tuah, kept up a series of harassing attacks on the hated enemy. After a time, Mahmud and his son, gathering confidence, moved from Pahang, first to a settlement far up the Johore river, and then to the Island of Bintang, the Sultan at Tebing Tinggi and the Prince at Batu Pelabohan.
