begin we gaze at the altar, the throne of the King of Kings, whereJesus Christ will soon be present under forms bread and wine. Ofcourse we cannot buy a new outfit of clothes and have our hairspecially done when we come to the Eucharist, but we need toprepare ourselves spiritually to meet Jesus Christ, the King ofheaven and earth. We can be silent and await his holy presence,do honour to him in his house before histhrone; empty our minds and mouths ofearthly matters, so that he may fill them withheavenly ones. We must render as much to ourheavenly King as we would to our earthlymonarch. This prayer, composed by EricMilner-White, sometime Dean of York andoriginator of the nine lessons and carols, is away of preparing ourselves for worship in theEucharist:-

“ Let us come into the Church of God to meetthe Spirit of God:

not to give religion an hour but to live in the eternal;not to maintain a decorous habit, but to bow in the holyplace before the Holy One;not to judge the words of the preacher, but to draw life fromthe Word and Truth everlasting;not to be moved or soothed by music, but to sing from theheart divine praises;not that mine eyes roam over architecture or congregation, but that my soul look up to the King in his beauty, and myheart plead the needs of thy children;not that my thoughts escape into the world, but that they bestill and know that thou art God.Let me go, and go again, into the house of the Lord, and beglad, and give thanks, and adore my King and my God.Amen

Every Blessing, Father Andrew

We have just received the very sad news that Margaret Blakerdied this afternoon. Margaret will be received into St. Wilfrid’schurch at 4pm on Monday 8th August with a Funeral RequiemMass at 2:00pm on Tuesday 9th August. After the service all willbe welcome to a reception in St. Wilfrid’s Church hall. A fullaccount of Margaret’s life will be in the September Bulletin.Peter G. Thursday 28th July.

The Feast of the Transfiguration - 6th AugustT h e T r a d i t i o nIn the Eastern Church the feast day was celebrated as early as thesixth century. But in the West it was Pope Callistus III whoinstituted its universal celebration in 1457 in commemoration ofthe victory over the Turks at Belgrade on 6th August 1456

B i b l i c a l B a c k g r o u n dThe Transfiguration of Christ is described by the three synoptic(story gospels) evangelists. It is also referred to in 2 Peter 1: 16-18.The 3 Evangelists describe the event in the following manner:

"Jesus took Peter and John and James and went up into themountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of hiscountenance was altered, and his raiment was white andglistening." Two men talked with him: Moses and Elias(Elijah). Peter and they that were with him were heavy withsleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory andthe two men that stood with him. "Peter suggests they erectthree tabernacles (tents), one for thee and one for Mosesand one for Elias. Even as he spoke, a cloud overshadowedthem and a voice said: "This is my beloved Son: hear him."

Jesus then goes on to talk of his impending journey to theCross. The glory of God seen at the mount of Transfiguration iscompleted and fulfilled through the self giving love of Jesus atthe crucifixion. Continued page 32

Welcome to Trevor Marshall and his familySunday 26th June, 2011

Sunday 26th June saw my family arrive at St Wilfrid's for the firsttime with me in my dog collar. Three years of training boileddown to this; the first day in a new parish.

The previous day saw 21 of us being ordained in ChichesterCathedral after a three day (mostly) silent retreat. Spending timewith those who were preparing to be ordained deacon and thosepreparing to be ordained as Priests was a wonderful experience. The support that we got from each other, the Bishops and thecathedral staff prepared us for the great day on Saturday. After arehearsal in the morning we had the legal elements of making ourdeclarations in front of the three bishops of the diocese. After thiswas all completed, there was the sight of 21 ordinands trying toget dressed in full clerical garb. Collars straightened, cassocksbuttoned up and surplices checked, we lined up for theprocession. Arriving at the door of the cathedral, I was amazed at

Page 5: AUGUST 2011 - Parish Church of Saint Wilfrid, Bognor Regis · PDF file · 2017-06-061 St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Ellasdale Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 2SG Office ( 01243 841275 office@

the number of people that were there. It was especially humblingto know that apart from family and close friends, there werepeople from Southwick to say goodbye and people from Bognor towelcome me. The ordination service was a bit of a blur - trying toremember exactly when to stand, sit and kneel; trying to avoidstepping on my neighbour's surplice and not to kneel on thebuttons on my cassock (a lesson learnt the painful way in therehearsal). After the service, we all greeted each other by our newtitles; the first time someone calls you Reverend or Father is quitean experience.

And so to Sunday. Lindsey, Ellie and Henry joined me for thedrive down to St Wilfrid's for my first day as a "clerk in holyorders". My sister and Uncle also came along to see my firstservice as a Reverend. We arrived and I went straight into thevestry so that I could get robed and go through the routine for theservice. I was more nervous about deaconing for the first timethan I was about the ordination service - after all, they made surethat we had a rehearsal for that. I think that I got through theservice with no more that a couple of minor heresies.

And onto the barbecue where I met so many lovely people who allmanaged to make Lindsey, Ellie, Henry and myself feel sowelcome and loved. Henry particularly enjoyed unlimited burgersand sausages, but what do we expect from a growing lad. Wearrived home tired but happy. I knew then that St Wilfrid's wouldbe the place for me to learn, to grow into the role of deacon butabove all, a place to be part of a church family.

It will take me time to know all there is to know about the peopleof the parish, but I intend to get to know as many of you as I canover the next few months. I hope that you will be patient andallow me to grow into the role of deacon. I know that the love thatI felt on the first day will be there for all of my time at St Wilfrid'sand that your prayers will support me in my time of learning. Youare in my prayers each and every day.

Father Trevor

Family Support Work Coffee Morning

With grateful thanks to all the many helpers who gave so muchtime to make this event in May such a success, also for all thedonations of prizes, bric a brac, gifts, books and money andespecially for all the delicious cakes which sold so well on the day.We are most appreciative of so much willing support in so manyways which made the atmosphere so welcoming and even theweather was good so that people really enjoyed the fellowship andthe refreshments in the sunshine.

Following my letters earlier in the year to each Anglican Churchin the Bognor area, representatives from five of the local Anglicanchurches attended the morning, helping and baking and meetingeveryone. It felt like a truly collaborative venture which helps toshare in the workload in supporting our Family Support worker,Rebecca Carter.Your prayers for her workwith local families and theInfant School is muchappreciated.

The whole event raised themagnificent sum of £540for Family Support Worklocally and will be used byRebecca towards thesetting up anddevelopment of the newproject in September, atNywood Infant School.

LUNCHTIME CONCERT3rd August, 20111:10pm - 2:00pm

Malcolm Hawke

Malcolm was born in Cornwall but spent his childhood inClevedon, Somerset. His father was an organist and played atClevedon Baptist Church for some 50 years. As a teenager,Malcolm would take the church and organ keys and go to play theBaptist organ - little did he know his father was listening outsidein the corridor. Thus when his parents were due to be away forthe Sunday School Anniversary Malcolm was asked to play theorgan. He promptly declined but his mother prevailed upon him

to agree by use of 'devious' means - blackmail! Since thatoccasion he has never looked back and has been a regular playerof the instrument. On leaving school at 16 he trained as a surveyor with theOrdnance Survey and was thus able to pursue his love of maps. After 3 years he was persuaded to further his musical interest bytraining as a teacher. He went to Culham College near Abingdonand completed a 4 year course. The music department was verylively and students took part in a range of activities ranging fromlight opera to singing services at Coventry Cathedral. As organscholar Malcolm had to play the organ almost every morning andthus had the luxury of living in college. He also ran the collegebrass ensemble, being a trumpet player, which toured variousschools and participated in various concerts. His organ tutorsincluded Barrie Sims, the assistant director of music at the collegeand in his 4th year John Long at the University Church, Oxford. His teaching career commenced in Brighton with some veryhardened 16 year olds and finished a fortnight ago with a class of5 year olds! Teaching mostly in West Sussex he was successivelyhead of music at 2 middle schools and for the last 20 years of hisfull time career Deputy Head at a large primary school. For the past 28 years he has played the organ at St Margaret'sChurch, Angmering having been asked to step in 'temporarily' in1983. He has adapted to modern ways and plays the keyboard,(standing up) in the music group and occasionally blows the dustout of his trumpet. For the past 19 years Malcolm has been the Honorary Secretary ofthe West Sussex Organists' Association, and for 5 yearsAdministrator of the London Organ Day. Having recently beenappointed as General Secretary of the IAO (IncorporatedAssociation of Organists) he has reluctantly handed these twoposts on to others. His interests are many. He is a guard on the Watercress SteamRailway, enjoys walking, drinking coffee at the local seafront café,singing with the St Richard Singers, in Chichester and trying tokeep track of his ever expanding family. He is married to June and they have 3 daughters, 3 Sons in Lawand 7 grandchildren - not to mention one cat.

NYEWOOD SCHOOL EUCHARIST

Thursday 7th July, history was made atNyewood Junior School. Fr. Andrewcelebrated a Eucharist for the wholeschool. All ten classes filed quietly intothe hall, a total of 250 children in all, ineager anticipation. The Holy Spirit was atwork amongst all that were there - Fr.Andrew, the teachers, the pupils and me.During the simple and moving service thechildren helped to dress the altar, light thecandles, serve the priest and offer the bread and wine (grapes). We had a dramatic gospel and the children read their ownprayers. Everyone had written their own ‘sorry’ prayers whichwere brought to the feet of Jesus. Hymns were sung to theaccompaniment of flute and piano.Three young boys who had been confirmed the previous Sundayat Arundel were among the twenty people who came forward toreceive Our Lord with those not confirmed receiving a blessing, then bread and grapes. A busy morning for Fr Andrew whoexplained the relevance of each section of the service to anattentive congregation. The Head Teacher Jon Williams, thanked all those who had takenpart and invited Andrew and I to come again. I am sure we will. This particular Eucharist pointed out not only the end of term butalso the end of the school year. Hope has been the theme for theschool’s term and this was reflected in the service.

Corpus ChristiCelebrant & Preacher The Right Reverend MarkSowerby,The Bishop of Horsham

23rd June 2011

The feast of CorpusChristi - to give it a fullertitle Corpus et SanguisChristi, is described inthe Anglican Calendar asa Day of Thanksgiving forthe institution of theEucharist. The day onwhich this sacrament isinstituted, is of course,Maundy Thursday, at theLast Supper, but there isso much to think about on that day, that there is little time todwell on the institution of the Eucharist. There is the footwashing, the commandment to love one another as Christ lovedhis disciples, the command to serve. There is the forthcomingarrest and the Garden of Gethsemane....so much to think about...and so it is only now, when the green season of ordinary time hasbegun, that we can pause to reflect upon the sacrament of theEucharist and our Holy Communion.

Regular watchers of 'The Apprentice' who love to hear LordSugar firing people for one mistake or another, may recall howone year a young man got his team into a deal of trouble over theJewish laws of Kashrut. The young man in question had apartially Jewish background, but clearly had no idea about theJewish food laws and he managed to make matters worse bysubstituting Halal poultry for a kosher chicken. We Christiansconsider ourselves free of religious food laws. Peter's vision whenhe is told to 'kill and eat' is taken to be a setting free from Jewishfood laws. These days we are more likely to follow the dietarylaws of some slimming or fitness guru -than anything specificallyreligious. ....though we do have an obligation to look after our

Page 21: AUGUST 2011 - Parish Church of Saint Wilfrid, Bognor Regis · PDF file · 2017-06-061 St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Ellasdale Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 2SG Office ( 01243 841275 office@

body which is intended to be the Temple of The Holy Spirit - aplace where God dwells.

A place where God dwells! On this feast of Corpus Christi, itreminds me of a story told in a pulpit a few years ago. A little boyasks his mother:

'Is it true that God is everywhere?'

'Yes' she replies.

Then is he in this cup then?

'Yes, I suppose so,'

The little boy carefully places the saucer overthe top of the cup and declares:

'Got him!'

It is as if in bread and wine we are claiming to have 'got' God. Godis not so easily trapped I fancy - but there is a sense in which weare saying that Jesus is in bread and wine in a way that he is notpresent everywhere. It is not easily explained and the varioustheological explanations of transubstantiation, consubstantiationand the like have been debated endlessly over the centuries ofChristian history. I think it is sufficient for most of us to live withthe mystery of how He does it, but to recognise in consecratedbread and wine 'the real presence' of Jesus. In a way that wecannot adequately put into words, he makes himself present inbread and wine - not just symbolically, but actually and it that isvery important.

When you bear in mind the Jewish laws of Kashrut-theslaughtering of Kosher meat, Jesus was saying something quiteextraordinary - and on the surface of it revoltingly sacrilegious.Jews do not eat meat with blood in it; they certainly don't indulgein cannibalism and they would never drink blood. Quite asidefrom the revulsion it would bring about.... It would be utterlysacrilegious to eat the flesh and drink the blood of a man. It wouldtransgress the commandment not to kill; it would transgress thelaw whereby blood is not consumed, for it represents the very lifeof an animal. In Jewish laws, if it is necessary to kill an animal to

Page 22: AUGUST 2011 - Parish Church of Saint Wilfrid, Bognor Regis · PDF file · 2017-06-061 St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Ellasdale Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 2SG Office ( 01243 841275 office@

22

eat, the blood should bedrained from it, becauseblood represents its life andit is forbidden to take lifeitself. The life of an animal, the life of a human, belongsto God.....

Then the Jews began toargue sharply amongthemselves, "How can thisman give us his flesh to eat?"

And yet Jesus of Nazarethtells his followers to eat hisflesh and to drink his blood. Why? Precisely because theyrepresent God's gift to them- the gift of life. Byconsuming Jesus flesh andblood, we take into ourbodies the life we have neverany right to take - but whichis freely given to us by Jesus. The flesh of Jesus and the life-bloodare his sacramental gift to us. He wants us to have his life withinus, inside us. He wants us to drink in his life, to share the life ofGod. The life that once coursed through his veins, - as he lived thelife of God incarnate, - he gives to us so that we may share his life.

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you can eat theflesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life inyou.

The only real and enduring life we can have is in and throughGod. If it is authentic life that God wants us to have, then it isauthentic flesh and blood that we take into ourselves. Throughthis Eucharist, we consume and imbibe the very life of Christ, notsimply as a religious obligation, but in order to be nourished, enriched and empowered to live his life in the world, to be asChrist to one another and to the world.

I came out of silence after breakfast on Saturday, March 5th. Theend of the retreat was immediately followed by coffee with thedirectors and those who had been on it with me; I found it strangeto hear the sound of conversation again and to take part in it. Thefinal event of the retreat was a Mass on the Sunday evening, atwhich the Director of St Beuno’s presided. During this celebrationthe retreatants were invited to share their experiences, albeitbriefly; it was an occasion for me to look back over the past thirtydays and to evaluate what had happened for me – what I hadhoped for, and what I had received.

Ignatian Exercises always begin with a Grace. This is anopportunity for the person praying to ask God for a particularoutcome. I had gone to St Beuno’s without any clearly defineddesires or needs, although I had for many years been interested inthe life and experiences of St Ignatius. I had thought that theretreat might help me to pray better, although I was not sure how.I had also felt that I might gain some spiritual insights, although Iwas far from clear what these might be. Before the SpiritualExercises had begun, one of the directors had said that we wouldfind them an “awesome” experience, but in the early days it hadseemed very far from that, being largely a matter of hard workwith little received in return.

One thing I had not experienced was any distinct “call” to aspecific kind of ministry. My spiritual director had told me that, although people often came to St Beuno’s with the hope of suchan outcome, this only happened occasionally. However, I now feltthat, although it might still be “business as usual” once I returnedhome, I sensed that I had been more effectively empowered toshare the experiences of my spiritual journey with other peopleand to apply them in practical ways. The Exercises on povertyand humility in the wake of that of the Two Standards had

challenged me to submit my life more effectively to Jesus. I hadalso been made profoundly aware of the importance of HisPassion, my praying of which had been followed by a tremendousinner sense of calm and joy, an experience that had continued togrow in the final days of the retreat.

The experience of praying the Passion and its outcome had alsohelped to give me a clear Trinitarian understanding of God. Thisprocess had begun in the first “week” of the Retreat, where theExercises on Sin and Hell had been followed immediately by thepraying of the parable of the Prodigal Son, where the Father haseffectively forgiven his son before the latter’s confession. Ignatiushad struggled with the notion that God’s Grace is freely given, andso had I. My praying of the life of Jesus, ending with hisCrucifixion, had enabled me to enter into a deeper relationshipwith this Person of the Trinity and to follow his Way moreauthentically. It had also helped me to make stronger connectionswith those passages of the Old Testament that prefigure Him. Theconsolation of the Good, or Holy Spirit that began on Tomb Dayproceeded directly from that very intense struggle with thePassion texts.

However, four months on, it is clear to me that the mostimportant outcome of the retreat was my learning to pray moreeffectively. This not only continues to facilitate a deeperfriendship with Jesus, but to give me a more effective focus as towhat things are really important, both spiritually and practically;as a result of this I have been enabled to make better decisions.Prayer is now essential to my daily living in a way that it had notbeen before the retreat, and whilst it is a struggle to find the timefor it with the other commitments I have, I still aim to manage atleast an hour and a half a day. Iremain truly amazed by the gifts Ihave received and the joy and peacethat I feel. The word “awesome” nowseems entirely justified.

DEANERY SYNOD REPORT – 8th JUNE 2011The first meeting of the new Synod was held at Felpham and beganwith the Eucharist, held in St Mary’s church. Members of theSynod then proceeded to the hall for a presentation on the topic of“Women in the Episcopacy”.

The presentation was given by Rev. Alastair Cutting (Chairman ofthe House of Clergy in the Diocesan Synod) and the Rev CanonRebecca Swyer (Diocesan Ministry Development Officer) and tookthe form of giving - and elaborating on - the reasons both forretaining the current stance of the Church of England on thismatter and for introducing women bishops into the church. Theseincluded arguments from the Bible and from Tradition as well asothers relating in particular to Episcopacy. Both speakers wereeffective in not appearing partisan and each was able to speak toarguments of both persuasions.

At the end of the presentation, members of Synod were invited todivide into small groups and to consider which of the arguments, both for and against change, were the strongest. They were theninvited to post stickers on to a board in respect of one argument forchange and one against that was for them the most persuasive. Itwas therefore possible to see which of the arguments were held tobe the strongest by virtue of the number of stickers – or “votes” –attributed to it.

There follow an opportunity for further questions, after which aformal vote was taken on three questions. Are you in favour ofwomen bishops in the Church of England? – on which the Houseof Laity voted “yes” and House of Clergy “no”. Do you think thatprovision should be made for those who cannot on theologicalgrounds to accept this development? – on which both Housesvoted “yes”. Do you think that the provisions in the draft measureare appropriate for this purpose? – on which both house voted“no”. As the votes were divided on the first question, the result wasthat the Synod did not make any recommendation.

Christopher Daviesand theEncounter Schemeat St Wilfrid’s

This autumn sees thebeginning of new venturefor St Wilfrid’s. ChristopherDavies will start a ninemonth placement with us aspart of the Diocesan YESEncounter Scheme. It is aGap year project whichbegan in 1997 that has developed into a servant leadership anddiscipleship course. The scheme helps 18 to 25 year olds developspiritually in life, ministry, outreach and worship by placingparticipants in a parish setting where they will grow and learn inrelationship with God and his Church. Encounter aims to equipfor a life of service to God, encourage a deeper biblicalunderstanding, give experience in a variety of areas across Churchlife and enable discovery of who people are and the gifts God hasgiven them. The Encounter year begins in September and ends inJuly. It is made up of three components, a placement in this caseSt Wilfrid’s Bognor, Quality training and an overseas mission inthe Spring. All this has been discussed and approved by theChurch Wardens and the PCC. Christopher will have a linemanager in Neil Macdonald and a mentor in Father Ray Thomaswho will work out his programme of prayer and work in theparish. At the moment Neil and Father Ray are working out a jobdescription with Christopher and he needs somewhere to live inthe parish so if you can help please contact either of the ChurchWardens. The year is part funded by the parish, by the dioceseand by Christopher. We shall be reading and hearing more of thisin the months to come. Please pray for Christopher as he preparesfor this exciting venture.

I would like to share with you some very encouraging news aboutthe public access of the website recordings of services. From the web page www.wilfrid.com/podcasts/podcasts.htm youcan access Sunday service and special service recordings rightback to 25th May 2008 which is when, with the invaluable help ofAdam May,we started making podcast recordings available. Wenow have over three years of Sunday services without a singlebreak! We also have many other events recorded.Website storage limitations sets constraints on what we can store,so the recordings made available are the sermons and specialservices. However we introduced recordings of the SundayEucharist notices, readings, intercessions and junior ‘what didyou do today’ recordings that only have a shelf life of one week(i.e. the links stay the same it is just the content that changes each

week). The access to the weeklyrecordings has become extremelypopular - so much so that recentlywe extended the idea to include acomplete recording of the ChoralEvensong which stays availablefor one month. You can see leftthat already in June listening tothese recordings has really takenoff, particularly the evensong.I hope this will give you someencouragement that there is great

interest in the Choral Evensong and our services generally waybeyond the number of people who actually attend the service. They may be in America or elsewhere on God's planet but they arethere. At the moment the quality is limited by the lectern and pulpit(speech quality only) microphones but we will be introducingbetter equipment in the future and my editing out out all theclicks and coughs and noise reduction filtration mean they don'tsound too bad at the moment either! S y m b o l sThe event is significant because it shows the testimony of theJewish law and Prophets to the Messiahship of Christ as revealinga further Divine proclamation of His Sonship and asforeshadowing his future glory. The prophet Elijah, who wasexpected to reappear just before the Messiah is a messianicsymbol, often represented by a flaming wheel (see 2 Kings 2verses 1 to 12 about Elijah going to heaven in a flaming chariot),while Moses stands for the Jewish Law given to him in the 10commandments o n Mt Sinai. This is portrayed by 2 stones withthe 10 commandments.

"When God had finished speaking toMoses on Mount Sinai, he gave him thetwo stone tablets on which God himselfhad written the commandments" Exodus31:18

The radiant light and cloud signify God'spresence. Artists have pictured the mountainin a symbolic way as a low mound upholding Jesus, Elijah andMoses, while the 3 disciples appear in the foreground. 3 tentsserve as a symbol for the event. Another symbol used consists of acrown enclosed in rays of glory representing Christ the King ofGlory. The artist Raphael has a cloud of light surrounding Christin his picture ofthe event. Thisis called an`aureole' whichis a field ofradiance andlight enclosing abody. It is a signof divinity.

HONARY ASSISTANT CLERGY

I come from a church family on my mother’s side. Iwas a choirboy from the age of 7 until I could nolonger get into a ruffed collar (I learned to sing falsettoso that I could earn money from weddings). I havebeen to many different churches as an adult as Imoved around for college and work. I always cameback to High Anglican as my preferred style ofworship but appreciate all styles. My work background has been varied and I movedinto consultancy positions in my early 30’s and havebeen doing this for many years now. I now work in theinsurance side of a major financial services companyin Brighton.I have been married to Lindsey for nearly 20 yearsand look forward to many more. We have beenblessed with two wonderful children Ellie and Henrywho are both about to start on their final years ofexam courses.I look forward to being an active part of the community

of St Wilfrid’s and Bognor Regis and getting to know the people and place of my new parish.
