August 2011

On April 26th, the City of Thunder Bay recognized four of our very deserving volunteers at the annual City of Thunder Bay Citizen’s Award Night. Vince and Frances Fragale and Wendy Morgan were given the Thunder Bay Good Citizen Award. This award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding volunteer contributions in Thunder Bay for a minimum of five years. While on the MS Board of Directors, Wendy Morgan was responsible for public education for a number of years and later served as fundraising chair, highlighted by her running of the highly successful ‘Carnation Campaign’. Vince and Frances have, over the past 10 years, raised $300,000 for persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in Thunder Bay through an event they initiated called the ‘Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance.’ Vince manages the coin boxes and organizes the annual Cava Golf Tournament that gives financial support to the Chapter. These three individuals have individually given over 30 years of volunteer time to a myriad of MS fundraisers and as well,

Wendy and Frances are current board members. Wendy Ferris was given the Spirit of Thunder Bay Award. This prestigious award is given to individuals that have shown extraordinary leadership and innovation and have given more than 15 years of volunteer time. Over the last 40 years, Wendy has volunteered with the MS Society and other agencies mandated to improve accessibility for persons in wheelchairs. Wendy had been until November 2010, a continuous board member of the MS Society for 40 years—five years as Treasurer and 35 years as Director of Public Relations. Wendy’s colourful and cheery quarterly newsletters have kept members up-to-date on MS issues and events. Wendy was a member of the HAGI transit committee, representing wheelchair users, for 10 years. She also served on the City of Thunder Bay’s Steering Committee on Accessibility for three years. Wendy Morgan, Frances Fragale and Wendy Ferris may have MS but MS does not have them.

Update

Support

Chair’s Update: Linda AdamsonMay was MS month and this year Judy Hole accepted the role of Mother of the Year. Judy typifies the ‘face’ of MS. She was diagnosed with MS in her late 20’s, at a time when she was building her career and her family. Judy’s family consists of her two active sons, Kenny and Jeremiah and her supportive husband Scott. Judy and extended family were out in full force for the MS Walk and won the prize for the team that raised the most. Judy will be helping throughout the year to increase public awareness of MS. She did a great job as the person who drew the winning ticket for the 50/50 draw.

The AGM was held June 1st. The Board decided to hold the event on a Saturday during the day so that more members could attend. The

event was a mild success. We had an audience of 13 for our speaker John Clack, Occupational Therapist who spoke on the use of electronic devises to help with scheduling, memory and organization. During the discussion period of the AGM, there was good debate on several issues raised by the members. We look forward to doing this again in 2012 with an even better turn out of members.

There have been some changes in our Board of Directors. Wendy Morgan has come back onto the board after a long break. She has accepted the position of Member at Large. We welcome Wendy and know we will benefit from her expertise from previous years on this board and others.Regrettably, Tabatha Kennepohl

resigned from the board. She held the position of Director of Volunteers. Thanks Tabatha for your help in getting our volunteer list more current and useable.

We have had some requests for equipment from our donated equipment inventory but we would love to be inundated with requests. If you are needing a second or a first scooter, wheelchair, walker, mattress system, super pole, commode, etc. we have lots and want to see them get used.

At this time I would like to thank, on behalf of the Board of Directors, all our volunteers who gave so many hours over the last few months to make all our events so successful. Our chapter is only as strong as its membership and volunteers.

sUpport reportJoanne TullochOur support group will meet at 7:00 pm on the last Monday of September at Superior High School. (Sept. 26th) Our first meeting will be a wonderful visit as we relive our fabulous summer adventures. In our discussions, we’ll hear how we dealt with the heat and humidity. For those who are new to the disease, you will be surprised at

how it affects you. We will spend time making suggestions for how to improve conditions to make living easier. There were several new members last year and it would be great to have more of you join the group this year. We like to talk about our concerns so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If we don’t have answers

we will try to find them.

To find out more about the meetings, call the office at 344-2944. Your call will be referred to me and I will call you.

Enjoy the sunshine.Joanne

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kim Hoard and I am the new Treasurer for the local chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. I obtained my Certified General Accountant’s designation (CGA), as well as a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree in 2005.I have been employed with the federal government for the past 10 years and I’ve worked in variety of positions both here and in Ottawa. I recently relocated back to Thunder Bay and am enjoying life in my hometown again.

I have previous volunteer experience including serving as Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary on the CGA Thunder Bay Chapter Board, marking CGA assignments, and serving on the United Way Committee for my place of employment. dVolunteering for the MS Society seemed like a natural fit since I suffer from the disease and my sister was recently diagnosed. Since joining the chapter as Treasurer, it has been a very busy time, with lots of great events going on. I hope to meet some of you out and about in the near future.

On Saturday July 30th, Thunder Bay saw the arrival of Jordan Kozina and his trek4ms. The former McMaster University Marauders football player and member of the Team Canada rugby team is now using his athletic ability to raise awareness and funds in support of the MS Society of Canada. Jordan is riding his bicycle across Canada, over 9000km from Tofino, BC to Cape Spear, NFLD, alone with nothing but a small tent and a handful of clothing in his pack.

Having spent both the day of his university graduation convocation and his 25th birthday riding along the (often non-existent) shoulders of the Trans-Canada highway, Jordan, originally from Brantford, ON, is making sacrifices, including funding the entire journey with his own money, all in hopes of raising $100,000 in support of the MS Society of Canada. There are planned stops at all 29 MS Society offices in Canada

during the trek4ms, and Jordan hopes to use this opportunity to meet people affected by MS and those working to help them. The cause is one close to Jordan’s heart; his aunt passed away from MS in January 2011. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that affects 75,000 Canadians today. The mission of the MS Society is to be a leader in finding a cure for MS and enabling those affected by MS to enhance their quality of life. The economic burden of this disease is immense and can come when a person is building both career and family. Mobility issues require equipment and services in the form of wheelchairs, lifts, power beds, household maintenance, and transportation. Jordan’s trek4ms is scheduled to be completed in late September. To get more information, follow Jordan’s progress, and make donations to the trek4ms visit www.trek4ms.ca.
