America’s Powerful Document

One of the few remaining copies of the Declaration of Independence was put on display last October in Phoenix. A reporter for The Arizona Republic asked 11 citizens why the document was still relevant today. Here is a summary of their comments:

“It is like a Bible that has been in the family for generations.”

“It is one of the world’s most precious documents.”

“It is a living breathing document with basic values underlying it.”

“It began with some rabble-rousers who believed we should be free, that we should be able to choose our own destiny.”

“The document is very much alive. It’s organic. It is not archival material. It’s real.

“I think the overwhelming message of the declaration is that it’s okay to disagree with the government.”

A pastor, Dr. William H. Stewart Sr., of the First Institutional Baptist Church, summarized the general consensus with these

words: “It is one of the greatest documents that has ever been written about people seeking freedom form an oppressive power.”

While political and personal freedoms are not the equivalent of spiritual freedom in Christ, they are blessings that should be available to all. Jesus, after all, identified himself as one coming to “proclaim release to the captives” (Luke 4:18).

To the Congregation and Church Council, thank you so much for the beautiful bouquet of roses. Your thoughtfulness is very appreciated. I also enjoy hearing your comments about the

American Independence

John Adams, who became America’s second president, was so elated when the United States was about to celebrate independence from England that he wrote: “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.”

RELAY FOR LIFE – 2014 UPDATE

As of now, New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Relay Team is in 2nd place for dollars raised and contributed to the American Cancer Society for our Kutztown University Event on May 30 and May 31, 2014.

Angels of Hope Team raised $27,318, New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Team raised $13,880, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fleetwood, raised $12,461. There are still some upcoming fundraisers for the year 2014 which will be added to these totals until August 31st. September 1st starts the 2015 year.

THANK YOU ALL for your help in raising this money for the fight against CANCER. As you know, without Larry and Faye Dey sponsoring the Car Cruise, this amount of contribution would not be possible. MANY of YOU help at the Car Cruise and during the year. Our team members, anyone battling cancer or has a loved one battling cancer now or previously, and the ACS, say THANK YOU!

2014 RELAY FOR LIFE

Due to restructuring at the American Cancer Society this year, there was some communication confusion between two offices — this is the explanation I was given as a reason that none of our luminaries were listed in the booklet at Relay. Therefore, I am listing your loved ones’ names below. — Erma Gajewski
