AUGUST 2012 News Briefs Brief items from the past month related to public art in Florida

FLORIDA
Florida's Art in State Buildings Program is currently seeking artists to submit examples of their work for two public art projects:
NEW! The Research Lab II & Link Building at Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute has an art budget of $95,000. The Art Selection Committee is interested in commissioning site-specific exterior work. The deadline for receipt of entries is Friday, September 14, 2012 at 5 p.m. ET.
NEW! The Brevard County Health Department Expansion has an art budget of $7,650. This project's Art Selection Committee is interested in a photographic mural for a long wall in the two-story entry lobby. The entry deadline is also Friday, September 14, 2012 at 5 p.m. ET.

BELLE GLADE
This month, youth interns complete work on a demonstration that also
involved 100 campers from rural towns near Lake Okeechobee. The
project, under the supervision of EcoArtist Jesse Etelson of Stuart, Martin
County, has garnered more than $100,000 in pro bono professional
contributions and in-kind resources. The purpose is to re-establish habitat
to attract wildlife native to the Okeechobee watershed. The project includes
plantings of native trees and other plants as well as installation of sculptures
created from exotic invasive trees and brush, based on wildlife biologists'
advice and designs by Etelson. The demonstration project will also involve
creation of a master landscape plan to populate with wildlife attracting flora
and wildlife habitat sculptures the entire littoral area around a lagoon in Torry Island Nature Park, belonging to
the City of Belle Glade. The project, conceived in April, has many partners, including EcoArt South Florida, the
Lake Okeechobee Regional Economic Alliance, US Green Building Council, Palm Beach State College, South
Florida Water Management District and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. A capstone exhibition will
document the project's progress during the month of September at the Dolly Hand Center, Palm Beach State
College, in Belle Glade.

BROWARD
Broward County Celebrates
New Artwork, I LOVE YOU
In June, Broward County Cultural Division’s Public Art &
Design Program held a dedication ceremony to celebrate
the installation of the public artwork, I LOVE YOU, located
at the new Young At Art Museum/Broward County
Library in Davie, Fla. Artists Roberto Behar and Rosario
Marquardt created the artwork which is meant to
function as an outdoor storytelling area.
In addition to the 10 ft. tall alphabet letters that spell the phrase “I LOVE YOU,” five brightly-colored, flower-
shaped benches provide seating to create an area of nature, love and story. The benches are placed in an arc
facing the I LOVE YOU sculpture to afford ample seating for storyteller and audience in the 44 ft. diameter
circular room.
Since the building’s grand opening in May, more than 48,000 people have visited this incredible, visionary
children’s museum, library and reading room, and the I Love You, sculpture has become a well-known and iconic
Pick Up and Drop Off point for the facility.
CORAL GABLES
The very first artwork to be installed through the City’s Art in Public Places program is souring on the PonceCat
building on the corner of ponce de Leon Blvd and Catalonia Ave. Created by Miami artist John Angée, this
sculpture entitled “Flight to Freedom” symbolizes the flight that so many have had to make from danger or
captivity, reminding us of the value of freedom.

GAINESVILLE Leslie Tharpe’s, The Giving Tree inspired by the Shell Silverstein book, was installed in July at the Senior Recreation Center in Gainesville
JACKSONVILLE Jacksonville’s public art program has recently adapted the S.O.S. (Save Outdoor Sculpture) condition report
modified for the purposes of individual site visits for various types of public art, not just sculpture.
KISSIMMEE
THE KISSIMMEE SCULPTURE EXPERIENCE
Preparing for their 6th year of displaying pieces to further our mission of making downtown an art and cultural
center for Osceola County. They actively promote the sale of sculptures to the public.
ORLANDO
The city of Orlando has received an “Our Town” grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts that includes $65,000 for public art related to the
area between the new SunRail stop and the Loch Haven cultural park.
VOLUSIA Volusia County has launched a new
website that showcases more than
200 pieces of art purchased
through the Art in Public Places
program in the last 22 years.
The art, which ranges from
monumental murals and bronze
sculptures to classical oil paintings,

and outdoor areas. It can now be viewed online at www.volusia.org/art, which includes detailed images and
information about the artists.
To see bright and beautiful pieces of art, visit the Ocean Center, where the collection incorporates the theme of
sun, surf, sand and speed. Artwork includes oil and acrylic paintings, wood and bronze sculptures, clay vessels,
and suspended dichroic glass and aluminum sculptures.
With 56 pieces, the Volusia County Courthouse in downtown DeLand has the largest Art in Public Places
collection in Volusia County. A block away, the Historic Courthouse has 27 pieces of public art and the new Chess
Park features a large outdoor mural.
The Deltona Regional Library has the newest collection, which is incorporated into bookcase ends, murals and
the children’s desk.
Other Volusia County public libraries displaying pieces purchased through the Art in Public Places program
include the DeBary Public Library, 200 N. Charles Blvd., DeBary; John H. Dickerson Heritage Library, 411 S. Keech
St., Daytona Beach; New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach; and the
Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, Port Orange.
Public art also can be viewed at the Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand; Daytona Beach
International Airport, 700 Catalina Drive, Daytona Beach; Lifeguard Headquarters and Administration Center,
515 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach; Marine Science Center, 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet; Ocean Walk
Village, North Atlantic Avenue, Daytona Beach; Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.,
DeLand; and the Votran Transfer Plaza, 207 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., Daytona Beach.
The Art in Public Places program, approved by the Volusia County Council in 1990, sets aside 0.5 to 1 percent of
the construction of all new, expanded or renovated publically accessible county buildings for acquisition of
artwork for permanent display.

SAFETY HARBOR
The City of Saftey Harbor Public Art Committee is requesting proposals from artists for The
City of Safety Harbor and the Public Art Committee is seeking proposals from artists or
artist teams for “Art Benches” to be installed at the Safety Harbor Public Library Art Park.
Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium for work applied to the benches. Deadline
for submissions Aug 2.
