The Green Schools Programme is an inspection or "Survey" of the school done by its students on its environmental practices (we call it Environmental Auditing). CMS students form teams and go around the school on an exploratory journey and find out what's happening to the water, energy, land, air and waste in the school. The team also explores how the school is managing these issues.

The Green Schools Programme

CMS, as an educational institution with a difference, will strive to make a significant contribution to the protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources, through is students, teachers, other employees, alumni and parents. It will seek to involve neighbouring communities around its twenty campuses to help make the city of Lucknow green, clean and eco-friendly. It will work through affordable, reliable and professional methods to achieve more responsible use of natural resources. By changing its 45,000 students' mindsets in favour of sustainable living, it hopes to make a meaningful environmental impact at the state, national and international levels.

Vision statement of CMS on Preservation of the Environment

CMS Goes the Green WayWater and Energy Conservation Programme launched at all campuses as SUPW activity

Taking lessons of environmental sciences beyond classrooms, CMS decided to introduce Water and Energy Conservation programme in all its campuses as SUPW activity. The idea behind this programme is to lead by example and not just to create awareness but to bring behavioural change. During the first year water and energy conservation will be made the centerpiece of SUPW (Socially Useful and Productive Work) classes in CMS while other issues like tree

plantation, air pollution and w a s t e management etc. would be t a k e n u p subsequently.Students of CMS Anand Nagar displaying posters and collages

CMS observed Groundwater Week at all of its 20 campuses from 16 to 22 July. As part of these celebrations, the Goundwater Day was celebrated on 21 July and on this day Rainwater Harvesting Plant was launched at all campuses. Various other activities to involve students in environmental conservation project including tree plantation, speech contest and poster making contest to raise awareness about groudwater were also organised. During this week, the students were taught about the ways to reclaim water and the junior engineers deputed at all campuses illustrated its process in the prayer assembly besides giving tips to the students on environmental conservation.

16 to 22 July observed as

Groundwater Week

Use efficient lighting

Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs). They consume time less energy and last 8 times longer. So you do not only cut your electricity bills dramatically, you also save a lot of money buying bulbs. Encourage Institutions, Govt. Departments to switch over to LED Light (Light Emitting Diodes), though expensive, but drastically bring down Electricity Bills

Use energy efficient electric appliances

In India, appliances like refrigerators and ACs have efficiency rating labels ranging from 1 to 5 stars, the higher number being more efficient. Use task lighting; instead of brightly lighting an entire room, focus the light where you need it. Use electronic chokes in place of conventional copper chokes. Replace conventional regulators with electronic regulators for ceiling fans

Use an energy efficient computer

Buy a laptop instead of a desktop. It consumes five times less electricity. If you buy a desktop, get an LCD screen. The screensaver does not save energy. Switching off a computer extends its lifetime Minimize printing. Print on both sides of the paper, using e-mail instead of mailing/faxing documents – concept of a paper-less office. Use recycled paper-saves trees & water for production of paper. Laser printers use more electricity than inkjet printers

Drive less

Walk, bike, carpool or take public transport. You'll save 1.5 kg of carbon dioxide for every 5 km you don't drive. Use cars that run on cleaner fuels such as CNG and LPG. Switch off your car if you want to stop for more than two minutes.

Check your tyres

Keeping your tyres inflated properly can improve the fuel efficiency of your car. Every litre of petrol saved keeps 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Using radial tyres will help you save 3 to 7% of fuel.

Use water carefully

Don't waste water. Use a mug of water when brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands and face. Instead of shower or tub bath, use a bucket. Try to harvest rain water in your locality. It takes a lot of energy to heat water – use less hot water and use efficient heating appliances.

Say no to plastic

While shopping take a cloth bag. Use recycled paper. Avoid products with a lot of packaging. Move your Air-conditioning thermostat up 2 degrees You could save about 900 kg of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment. Set the thermostat of the room air conditioner at 25C to get the most comfort at the least cost.

Plant more trees

A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Turn off electronic devices

Simply turning off your television, stereo, computer, fans, lights when you are not using them will save you thousands of kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.

Turn your refrigerator down. Refrigerators account for about 20% or Household electricity use. Use a thermometer to set your refrigerator temperature as close to 37 degrees and your freezer as close to 3 degrees as possible.

Turn off the lights when not in use. Take advantage of daylight by using light-colored, loose-

weave curtains on your windows to allow daylight to penetrate the room. Also, decorate with lighter colors that reflect daylight.

Microwave ovens Consumes 50% less energy than conventional electric / gas stoves.

Do not switch on the power when TV and Audio Systems are not in use i.e. idle operation leads to an energy loss of 10 watts/device.

Turn off your home office equipment when not to use. A computer that runs 24 hours a day, for instance, uses – more power than a energy-efficient refrigerator. If your computer must be left on, turn off the monitor; this device alone uses more than half the system's energy.

Setting computers, monitors, and copiers to use sleep-mode when not in use helps cut energy costs by approximately 40%.

Battery chargers, such as those for laptops, cell phones and digital cameras, draw power whenever they are plugged in and are very inefficient. Pull the plug and save. Screen savers save computer screens, not energy. In fact, shutting computers down when you are finished using them actually reduces system wear – and saves energy.

Regularly defrost manual-defrost refrigerators and freezers; frost buildup increases the amount of energy needed to keep the motor running.

Leave enough space between your refrigerator and the walls so that air can easily circulate around the refrigerator.

Operate the ceiling fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air more effectively throughout the room and operate the air conditioner at higher temperature.

A roof garden can reduce the load on Air Conditioner

Use windows with sun films/curtains.

Plant trees of of shrubs to shade air-conditioning units but not to block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.

Think about your curtains. Keeping the curtains closed on cold, cloudy days helps block the cold outside air from getting inside. Also, keeping the curtains closed on very hot days keeps the hot air out!

About 75 percent of the water we use in our homes is used in the bathroom. Unless you have a low flush toilet, for example, you use about five gallons to seven gallons of water with every flush! A leaky toilet can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water a year.

Drippy faucets are bad, too. A faucet that leaks enough water to fill a soda bottle every 30 minutes will waste 2,192 gallons of water a year.

SIMPLE TIPS WHICH MAY BE FOLLOWED AT HOME IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.” - Mahatma Gandhi

CMS, in the leadership of Professor Geeta Kingdon, has taken the initiative to launch a massive environmental drive in collaboration with the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi as part of the Green Schools Programme.Saving the EnvironmentOur environment refers to the physical and biological factors along with their chemical interactions that affect our health and happiness in daily life. The air, water, soil and sunlight are given to us for free by Almighty God and are a part of Mother Earth. It forms our natural environment.Today man has become selfish and mean. He is polluting the environment, Natural resources are being used recklessly and wasted callously. Many of these resources are non-renewable like coal and petroleum and we must preserve them. They have taken ages to form. Other resources like solar energy, water, power and wind energy are renewable but these must be kept clean and used carefully to fulfill our daily needs of energy and water. Polluting the air can be dangerous to our health and its effects may cause several deadly diseases. In today's world, wars are becoming more deadly with the use of chemical and biological weapons and atomic bombs. Nuclear bombs can destroy all the countries within minutes and wipe out chunks of humanity simply at the press of a button.

Environment and Energy Awareness Workshop

CMS organized an Environment and Energy Awareness Workshop at CMS Kanpur Road on 20 June 2012. The workshop was facilitated by resource persons from Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) New Delhi,

Mr Ashish Shah and Ms Ajanta Sikdar who trained CMS teachers and to implement the 'Green Schools Programme.' Mr V N Garg, Principal Secretary, Welfare of the Disabled, Uttar Pradesh, was the chief guest while Mr O P Verma, Director, Department of Environment, UP, was the special guest. It was on this very day that an international conference on environmental sustainability was organized by UNEP at Rio De Janerio, Brazil. Apprising the participants with the objectives of the workshop, Chief Operating Officer of CMS, Prof. Geeta Kingdon said that CMS believes that a school should concern itself with the affairs of the age and in the present times, the state of environment is one of the most important issues that we need to focus our attention upon.

AUGUST 2012 (2)

CMS Moral Education Department led by its Head, Mrs. Vandana Gaur conducted educational lectures at various campuses to sensitize children about saving water and energy, planting trees, rain water harvesting and environmental protection. The facilitators used songs and educational talks to motivate students towards the conservation of environment.

I was told this in a sad toneThere was plaster on her leg

The Kite When My Granny broke her bone

Few days ago there was Open day in our school campus and

our computer teacher had asked us to make a presentation

for the Open Day on the given topic. I was really interested in

making the presentation and some of my classmates. From

the next day I started making my presentation at home. The

first day I made half of my presentation. But I had to complete

it by the next day. And I have a lot of work to do in it. The next

day some of my friends had already shown their

presentations and they were also selected. When I went

home, I started working on my presentation. It was late at

night but I had completed it. When I went to school, I ran to

my computer lab and I connected my PD in the CPU and when

I went to call the teacher what I saw was shocking because my

presentation was deleted. I had nothing to say. But my teacher gave me another chance. I was very worried

how to make my presentation in one night. The work was

more and the time was less. It was 12’o clock at night when I

had finished my presentation. I went to the school and I

showed it to my teacher. She said that "it's very nice. You have

done it.' Listening this I felt like flying in the sky. I went home and told about this compliment to everyone in

my family and they were very glad to know this. It was the

best compliment I had heard because I achieved it by my hard

work. — Sanskriti Gupta, VII, Rajendra Nagar II

I know we never shared the same blood,

Neither the same house,

Actually nor the same thinking,

You were still the same every where I go,

Though you never like the colours I do,

And neither you fancy the things I own,

But you were still there when I needed you,

Though you never liked some aspects of mine,

And neither you think what I do is fine,

But still I found you in the shadow I keep,

I also know we’re there not for long…

And also that parting occurs like a song…

But still you would, be there in every memory I keep….

Though you never liked the food we shared….

And neither the books I read,

Nothing in common; nothing the same;

Neither a book, nor a game,

But you’re still there, you still care…

And I do know my friends,

Its not the house, not the blood, neither the

Book nor the game;

But it’s the life we share…

It’s really our lives we share.

International Media Conference on Save the Girl ChildOrganised by World Unity Education Department

AUGUST 2012 (5)

The 3rd International Media Conference on ‘Save the Girl Child’ was organised by CMS World Unity and Peace Education Department (WUED) at CMS Kanpur Road auditorium on 15 July 2012. Renowned media personnel , Bureau Chiefs , Ed i tors , Senior correspondents, psychological experts, scholars, social activists and educationists from various countries of the world presented their forceful ideas and discussed the ways and means to check abortion of girl child, atrocities on girls, curbing their creative talent, hampering their all round growth and development, gender bias etc.

The conference was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest Hon'ble Member of Parliament and wife of Chief Minister, Shri Akhilesh Yadav, Mrs Dimple Yadav by lighting the traditional lamp of learning. Inspiring songs and prayers like 'I bear witness O My God..' presented by CMS music teachers made the atmosphere Divine and reverential. Minister for Health and Family Welfare, UP, Mr Ahmad Hasan presided over the conference. On this momentous occasion, Hon'ble Mrs Dimple Yadav also inaugurated the special programme called 'Ummeed' for girls belonging to weaker and poorer section of society launched by CMS.

In her inaugural address, the Chief Guest, Mrs Dimple Yadav said that only a society which respects its daughters can progress. She said that social welfare organizations must come forward to provide a positive and healthy environment to children especially girls for their all round development and progress. On this occasion, the Health and Family Welfare Minister, UP, Mr Ahmed Hasan said that killing the girl foetus is the cruelest of crimes in society and there is a need for the media and educators to join hands and start a revolution by arousing consciousness amongst the masses against this inhuman act.

In her keynote address delivered on the occasion, President and Chief Operating Officer of CMS, Prof Geeta Kingdon spoke on the topic 'Getting to Equal'. In

her address, she presented some comparative facts and data on rights to birth, survival, education etc. of girls and boys. She said that female education has relatively more powerful effects as it affects child survival, child health, nutrition and education hereby contributing in the overall health and development of the society. Earlier, Organizing Secretary of the conference, Mr Rishi Khanna welcomed all the participating dignitaries and the audience. Head of CMS WUED, Mr Anirudh Singh was the convener of this conference.

While addressing the conference, Senior Resident Editor of Hindustan Times, Lucknow, Ms Sunita Aron said that every woman should be proud to be a 'She' and that in a democratic country like India, the power to raise voice against every wrong lies with the citizens and if they decide to speak up, they can indeed start a mission of improving the world on their own. Senior journalist from New Delhi, Mr Javed Naqvi said that the problem of feticide is worse than genocide, racism or holocaust and therefore it requires a political movement purely dedicated to cause of women to deal with. Mr Peter Vrooman, Spokesperson, US Embassy, New Delhi quoted some statistics by Nobel laureate Shri Amartya Sen and giving examples of Star TV's programme 'Satyamev Jayate' and an Indo-US Collaborative movement against human trafficking in Kolkata, he said that media and technology together have power to impact the thinking of the masses. Dy. Director General, Doordarshan, New Delhi, Mr Mukesh Sharma called upon the media to take up this issue seriously. Quoting a Marathi slogan 'Mulli Sikhli Pragati Jhali' (If daughter gets education, the society prospers) and explaining how this slogan became a hit in Maharashtra with media support, he said that media has the power to compel people to think and act. Former Director of CBI, Mr Joginder Singh, IPS, said that feticide should be considered equivalent to murder and a law should be passed to this effect in the Parliament. Prime Time Anchor, IBN7, Mr Sandeep Chaudhary said that girl child is usually the

favourite child for parents in most families but trying to be over protective towards her we begin to discriminate between her and the boy. He said that we as society are not ready to take hard decisions and if we give equal opportunities to our girls, the condition of women would improve. Senior Journalist, Satish Jacob said that we live in a hypocritical society. While most of our popular deities are women, we are still murdering over half a million girls each year. That way, India repeats a holocaust every year, he said. Senior Executive Editor, News 24, Mr. Rahul Mahajan said that unfortunately we live in a society which has different standards for boys and girls. Child Rights Activist from New Delhi, Mr Sabu George said on this occasion that sex selection was brought to India 40 years ago and discrimination intensified when these tests became widely available. He said that we must understand that technology is there only to support the medical profession and we have to respect laws associated with it instead of supporting the companies which are trying to make money from out of this inhuman practice. Social activist and Professor, Mirinda House, University of Delhi, Ms Bijaylaxmi Nanda called upon the teachers and mothers to teach children about equality between sexes. Mr Ajay Jha, Bureau Chief, Gulf News, New Delhi said that media is only a mirror, it can only raise an issue but has no power to compel or punish. He said that the onus lies upon the society to join hands with the media in rasing its voice and putting pressure upon the government so that the protection of the rights of women and child is guaranteed. Many other eminent participants too expressed their views on the occasion. CMS Founder, Dr Jagdish Gandhi said that press and media plays a major role in building mass opinion against various social evils and if this fourth pillar of the democracy joins in the school's efforts to fight the issue of gender inequality, a positive social set up could be brought about. The conference concluded after an interactive roundtable session facilitated by Mr Sandeep Chaudhary, Prime Time Anchor, IBN7.

The EyeRIS Interactive Whiteboard introduced in CMSE-Learning: Learning which is Engaging, Empowering and Effective

The EyeRIS Interactive Whiteboards were first unveiled in May 2012 by Honorable Chief Minister Mr Akhilesh Yadav and Dr Jagdish Gandhi and Mrs Bharti Gandhi. The project envisioned by Chief Operating Officer, CMS, Prof Geeta Kingdon takes learning in CMS schools to a new height. These Interactive Whiteboards have now been installed in all CMS campuses in June 2012. All campuses have incorporated the use of these boards in their curriculum in the junior classes and in some selected campuses even the senior, primary and pre-primary sections are benefiting from this new form of multi-modal learning. The subjects taught range from Maths and Science to History and Geography, Computers, English and Hindi. The project is unique, because these Interactive Whiteboards are being initiated for the first time in any school in U.P. These units are projector-based unlike the smart classes or promethean based currently used in various schools. This revolutionary technology converts any normal surface into an interactive area using a small palm-sized gadget and a projector. With the start of the new session in July 2012, The teaching staff was very happy with this digitisation of the classroom and finding it a very useful tool to make their learning effective and engaging. Features such as hand-writing recognition, option of “saving” the class sessions and many more are particularly useful. In addition they can use resources from the internet such as videos and images providing a “richer” and “more visual” learning.

The kindergarten children enjoyed a journey into the world of taste and health at the Table Top Cooking activity held at the campus on 14 July. Children loved being involved in preparing dishes like sandwich, sprouted moong dal salad, yummy bhel, healthy grams, cheese and jam ducks and puzzle sandwiches.

A Robotics Workshop was organized at the campus for students of class V to VIII. Through projector on screen and models of solar and battery run robots, different topics on robotics like various kinds of robots, their structure, layout and necessary things required for making of robots etc. were explained to the students. Students' curiosity was quenched by answering their queries on robots.

Students of all classes prepared attractive posters on environment during the water conservation week celebrations. These posters were put up for display at campus notice board.
