EEAASSTT BBAAYY BBAANNTTEERR By: Ken Rogers

Hi From East Bay, On June 29th, we met at the Wallace’s home for a planned cruise to Alice’s Restaurant in the Santa Cruz mountains. This is a very popular spot with bikers, bicyclists, and hikers. It was a very warm day for the nice group of folks that headed out for the cruise. Before starting up the mountain we hooked up with Silicon Valley Chapter member, Jim Dillinger. We missed seeing his wife, Margo, but she had other plans for the day. It’s a neat ride up to Alice’s, on a beautiful, scenic road. It was a day enjoyed by all. On the 4th of July, our chapter cruised the Fremont 4th of July Parade, along with Nancy Agrusa and Jose B. from the Livermore Chapter. We had 9 F-100’s in the parade, decorated with flags and ribbons. We were looking good! After the parade we all headed over to Round Table Pizza for a cold beer and some great pizza. Nothing better on a hot summer day, and everyone had a great time. On July 13th, we had members attend the Classic Cruisers Car Show in Newark. It was held at the New Park Mall, and there was a nice turnout for this show. On July 18th, three of our members attended the Downtown Hayward Street Party. There were lots of folks strolling the streets, checking out the fine vehicles, vendors, and live music. Hope we see you at this year’s North-South Run. It’s not too late to make it to Morro Bay, a great spot for a run. There’s lots to do while there. See ya’ Kenny Rogers East Bay Chapter

TRIVIA Last month’s question: What talk/music show featured John Lennon as co-host for a full week in 1972? Answer: Between January 31 and February 7, 1972 John Lennon and Yoko Ono filmed five episodes of the Mike Douglas Show where they joined Mike as co-hosts. Along with the guest appearances and musical performances are John and Yoko discussing their love for each other, Lennon’s boyhood recollections, Ono’s unique art projects, and lots of other candid discussion. Nobody describes these shows better than Mike Douglas himself who says “It was probably the most memorable week I did in all my 20-something years on air.” Posted by Happy Nat on June 11, 2012 at 6:00 am. (Modesto Chapter came out in force this month to answer this question, as Bob Hansen, and Susan Davis both sent in the answer, and Michael Robinson provided the above detailed answer. There was also a response from out friend in Classic Cruisers USA—Jeannie Clements)

This month’s question: What TV. show had the star’s real life husband playing the role of “The Blue Djinn”? What was his name?

Modesto Happenings

By: Bob Hansen

The Modesto Chapter club run – Summer Bash 2013 – was held on July 21st at the Fruit Yard. It was a great success – and many thanks to everyone who came out to support our annual event. We raised a lot of money for our charities, Shriners Children’s Hospital, Soroptomist Christmas Tree, and Community Hospice. The event was held on a sunny and warm Sunday at the beautiful park at The Fruit Yard. Thank you to Joe Traina for allowing our club to use this facility for our car shows. Many shade trees allowed some cool relief to the very warm day. Helping out at the run was John and Linda Walsh, Dusty and Debbie Johnson, and JerriLynn and MacKenzie, Bob and Susan Hansen, Mike Keller and Bailey and Nathaniel, Russ Prouty, Mike Wika and son, Gary Wika, Tom Tomberlin, Wayne King, Jeff Davis and Susie, Ralph and Sherrel Haverson, Carl Piercefield, Paul King, and Michael and Leanne Robinson.

4

We had an entertainment filled day, starting off with rock ‘n’ roll music all day by DJ Gene Adams, Shrine Clowns who made balloon animals and showed off their crazy cars, coloring contests for the kids, bubble gum and candy jar guess-the-number games, and a poker walk for the adults, which was included in registration. Our thanks to Vern Silva who graciously performed free NSRA safety checks for anyone who wanted one.

It was great to see support from the other chapters at our run. Thanks for making our great show a little better! Attending were Art Davis and Howard Kleinert from Port City; Sydney Crosswhite, Nancy Agrusa, and Jose Ramos from Livermore; Don and Susan Cox from Delta; Earl Pecka from San Joaquin; and guests Mario Vanotti and Zahid Bursh.

5

We had a lot of beautiful trophies created by Dusty Johnson, and much appreciated by the numerous trophy winners! As always our raffle went well. We had a record number of prizes, thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors; a silent auction for a first edition history of Nascar and IMAX movie; and a raffle for a hand made quilt. When it came time for trophies and raffle prizes, everyone found a shady place to hear their name called! And as always, John Walsh was the host with a big smile for everyone.

The Modesto Chapter had a great month and a great show

*************************************************************************************** A man goes into a pet shop, wanting to buy a bird. He sees a beautiful bird, the loveliest he's ever seen, and asks how much it is. The shop owner replies 'that bird is $1000'. 'What?!?' cries the man, '$1000 for a bird? What does it do?’ 'Well, I'm glad you asked.' says the shop owner, 'you see, that bird can sing every female role in the ring cycle from memory.' The man thinks, ok but I can't afford the bird. He sees a shorter, but still beautiful, bird and asks how much that one is. 'That bird is $2000' replies the shop owner, and the man asks what this bird can do. 'Well, he can play any Paganini concerto you request on the violin from memory' the man thinks wow, but I really can't afford that bird. He then sees an ancient, hunched, half-dead, ugly, bald bird croaking in the corner of the cage, and, thinking that this bird couldn't cost very much, enquires. 'Oh, that bird is $20000' he is told by the owner. Flabbergasted, the man asks what this bird does. 'Oh, we haven't found out yet' the owner replies, 'but the other two call him 'Maestro''

SORRY, WE DIDN’T GET ANYTHING FROM PORT CITY THIS MONTH

At a wedding, the DJ polled the guests to see who had been married longest. The bride's grandparents took the honors. The DJ asked them: "What advice would you give to the newly-married couple?" The grandmother said: "The three most important words in a marriage are, 'You're probably right.'" Everyone then looked at the grandfather for his answer. He, wisely, answered: "She's probably right."

LIVERMORE LINES

By: George Withers

Willie Sharp had some serious oxidation problems with the top of his 1956 F100, so he came up with a very innovative solution, replaced the whole top. The top is fiberglass and it is cemented to the frame of the truck's top with a product called Plio-Grip. It's made by Valvoline. GM and BMW use it in the manufacturing process of some vehicles. I'm told it has become the favorite of the body shops in panel replacements.

7

His son-in-law, Mark, helped put it on. The fit is great and they were very pleased with the ease of installation. He is not going to replace the drip molding. He purchased the top from Mid-Fifty F-100 Parts. They also offer a fiberglass roof for 53-55 trucks. They're $350.00 plus shipping. Catalog page 107. Online also: http://www.midfifty.com/. The adhesive was $45.00. The application gun was $55.00. Willie purchased the adhesive and applicator at Finish-Masters in Dublin. Willie provided some photos of his pickup with it's new top in place. As you can see, Willie is not too far away from painting. Great job Willie, and we look forward to seeing her back on the road, without the Roof Scoop!!

Sunday, July 21st, dawned bright and clear. Silicon Valley Chapter members Gary Bohn and Jim Dillinger cruised the short distance to Saratoga Village to check out the day’s activities taking place there, simply called the Saratoga Car Show. This is the 4th year the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce has spearheaded this event, and each year the growth of the show has been easily observed. Like so many other “downtown car shows”, this event takes place on the street, and in the surrounding parking lots. The real difference, and apparently the main draw, seems to be the picturesque village itself. The tree lined street, and the comfortable and homey businesses creates a setting that makes one want bring their special interest vehicle out and mingle with all the other great cars and trucks, as well a to interact with what appears to be the thousands of “civilians” that turn out to view the spectacle. The show organizers, as well as their many sponsors, go all out to provide a variety of sights, sounds, and tastes to please as wide a spectrum of participants and spectators as possible. There was live music to be enjoyed all day long. There were myriad prizes being raffled off, as well as a silent auction with some fabulous prizes being competed for. There were vendors for food, clothing, jewelry, wine tastings, knick-knacks, and just about anything else you could think of, all in addition to the local merchants that opened their doors to participants and spectators alike.

10

11

There were over 160 registered entries, plus who knows how many people brought their special interest vehicles and simply parked on the street without “officially” entering. The net result was if you had the nerve to walk out into the middle of the street (There was a TON of traffic continuously cruising up and down the street) and look up the hill to the west, you were treated to a gorgeous, multi-colored view of fantastic hot rods, classics, customs, trucks, and every other kind of vehicle imaginable.

The Leukemia-Lymphoma Society partnered with the car show and had a VIP gathering on Saturday evening for wine tasting, etc. as a warm up for Sunday’s festivities. It hasn’t been determined yet how much they were able to raise for the very worthy cause, but suffice it to say….everything helps. Be sure to mark your calendar for the third weekend in July, 2014 for the 5th Annual Saratoga Car Show, once again they plan on it being in the Saratoga Village, the gateway to the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains.

*************************************************************************************** This is something that you may want to pass on to other car/truck folks and their clubs. Over the years I have purchased MANY thousands of dollars in truck parts over the internet. Last week I attempted to purchase merchandise from OnlineCarStereo.com. Upon submitting my order, I was sent an email demanding that I provide a list of items which I would not consider. The list appeared to me to be to collect information much like NSA and IRS does. I refused and in so doing my order was canceled. They have NOT removed the charge from my debit card account even though it took them only a matter of minutes to make the charge for several hundred dollars. If you do not have extra money in your account, you may not want to have them obligate your funds for a long time. B N “Will” Willis

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theatre of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to: M&M Mars A Division of Mars, Inc. Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes." This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion.

There can be only one.

Busily checking in luggage for the large airline where I work, I have to ask every traveler, "Is this your suitcase?" At the peak of the afternoon rush one day, a man hesitated after my inquiry and then replied, "No, it's my brother-in-law's, but he said I could use it."
