VIP Group: Doncaster Supported Living Service The VIP group is a social event we hold every 3 months for the people we support in Doncaster. We hold it in a working men’s club who let us have the room for free and St Anne’s provide a buffet. We give everyone a free raffle ticket when they come in and there are usually ten prizes which are generally sweets or chocolate which is always a winner. We also talk about more serious things, such as how to keep safe, being part of recruitment and making a complaint. We also have a quiz which is just for fun, and people we support are involved in open discussion and put their own thoughts and ideas forward. Clients have a drink from the bar, and it’s a good opportunity for people to meet and catch up. Sue Shearman, Temporary Area Manager, Doncaster Garden Group This is a joint project of Track Rd, Mencap Branches Day Service and Kirklees LD service at Crescentdale. After months of hard work, an open day was held at Crescentdale to officially launch the joint garden group and new poly tunnel. The day was well attended with a raffle, tombola, arts & crafts, plant sale and refreshments on offer. There was also a competition to suggest an apt name for the project which would be chosen by the group members. The poly tunnel was purchased after Track Road won a generous bid of £750 from the St Anne’s Innovation Fund, with compost, seeds and plug plants being purchased from a £250 award won by Branches Day Service in Batley from “Mencap in Kirklees”. The Kirklees Learning Disabilities Service at Crescentdale in Heckmondwike have kindly let the garden group have use of their land where the poly tunnel has been erected. The garden group made up of Mark Ainley from Track Road and his friends from Branches, Harold Cook, Paul Snape, Jonathan Wright and Jean Reddick all received certificates of achievement to recognise their hard work over the last few months. At the opening ceremony, Mark cut the ribbon to officially open the Poly tunnel and Jean gave a small speech. It is hoped that the project will continue for many years to come and the group, now named “Gardeners Paradise” are already planning next year’s produce. August 2013

Big Event What a day Saturday September 28th was for St.Anne’s Big Event 2013. The sun was shining and therewas an air of excitement at Headingly Stadium in Leeds asover 400 people – clients, staff and family members –arrived for the occasion.

Julie Robinson, Chief Executive of St. Anne's, opened theday with a welcome and then the fun began!

There was an array of stalls and performances whichincluded the band ‘Nordic Voice’ and a fantastic danceperformance from ‘The Alphabets’.

'The Outsiders', who performed last year, gave us a treat byoffering an interactive drumming session. There were stallswith cakes that had been made by staff from LeedsSupported Living, Bradford Supported Living andSubstance services. There were two exhilarating Zumbaclasses; an art and photography competition and theopportunity to have a massage.

A big thank you to the organising committee made up ofChristopher Mills, Sarah Healey, Stephanie Harper andNicky Lyall; to our many stall holders and volunteers on theday; and also to Priesthorpe School staff and students.

Also thanks goes to Jamie Jones Buchanan and all atLeeds Rhinos and Headingly Stadium who offered thespace and their time to make this day so special.

IiP Gold St Anne’s successfully retained its Gold Investors in People (IiP) status following aglowing assessment report from our assessor, John Taylor. IiP is recognised as anational standard which measures how well organisations manage, develop andmotivate their workforce.

John spent 10 days with St Anne’s between August and September and met staff andclients from Bradford, Sheffield, Ripon, York, Doncaster, North Tyneside, Gateshead,Leeds and Huddersfield.

Overall, our assessor believed that St Anne’s had a “values and person-centredservice delivery ethos that consistently runs through their management, workingpractices and the ways that they engage their staff”. He also felt that, despite theeconomic challenges, our service delivery models have remained resilient and thatmanagers and staff should “take great credit for maintaining their business focus”. Healso felt that it would be difficult “to find a more committed community of staff in anycomparator organisation”.

Daniel I went to Cawood Camp Site supported by Wayne. I hadbeen looking forward to this for a long time as we had triedit last year for a few days with much success and fun.

This year I planned it on my review to go for longer and aftertalking with Wayne we decided to take some bikes. I wouldbe on mine and Wayne would be on a bike borrowed frommy Dad. We had taken a bike map with us to use the cycleroutes all over this part of the country. The 2nd day wecycled into York and back a trip of 25 miles. I was verypleased of my achievement and the fun we had.

On the last day of the holiday I really wanted to see if I couldcycle to my Mum and Dad’s place, this would be a roundtrip of at least 33 miles which ended up a little further as wetook a detour. If you look at these pictures this is whatWayne had to do to his saddle to cushion his bottom. Wedid laugh as Wayne stood up a lot on his peddles on thelast ten miles.

Wayne said this is a true statement about ‘Making ItHappen’ his bottom might not agree, I did wind him upabout this.

November / December 2013

Walking Group Our walking group chose a good day on the 19th November as the weather was clearbut cold. We soon warmed up when we got walking. We left Grove House at 10.30,and met David from Knottingley in the bus station, and arrived at Walton NatureReserve at 11.00am David took the lead, and set the pace for the walk.

Jonny had brought some bread with him, and Jonny and David both fed the geeseat the lake (after being chased by a goose!).

“We managed to complete the two mile walk with only a few grumbles, buteveryone was surprised and pleased when they found out they had completeda two mile walk. After the walk, we all went to the New Inn for some dinnerwhich everyone agreed was very very nice.” (Jonny and Eric)

Andrea Andrea is a 36 year old woman, who moved into aGateshead independent supported living home inNovember 2013. Andrea moved from her family homewhere she had grown up, and although the transition couldhave been an anxious and potentially traumatic time forAndrea, the move to date has proven to be a great success.

Through the support of St Anne’s staff and the team work ofher family, social services and a multi disciplinary team,Andrea has quickly adapted to life in her new home and isdeveloping new friendships with her house mates.

Through supporting Andrea to express herself, she hasbeen able to participate in a range of activities, both in-houseand within the community, all of which she enjoys. As the StAnne’s staff continue to get to know Andrea, and with thehelp and support of her family, it is felt that the future will holdmany opportunities for Andrea to explore and allow her toflourish as an individual.
