The carpet cleaning event of the year returns to WicksteedPark on September 20th!

Nicky LawNewslink Editor

ow is the time to book your place at the biggest N and best carpet cleaning industry event of 2014.

Taking place on Saturday September 20th at Wicksteed Park in Kettering, the Carpet Cleaners Carnival (CCC) is open to everyone in the industry, both within and outside the Association. A family friendly event, the CCC brings together business and pleasure; business owners, technicians, partners, children, relatives and friends will all find something of interest at the event.

The CCC exhibition continues to grow each year and features the biggest names in the industry. Manufacturers, suppliers, advisors, service providers and many more representatives will be present and promoting the very latest in equipment and chemicals, along with new services, benefits and promotions only available at the show. The event provides a rare opportunity to get up-close with a variety of different machines and many of the exhibitors will be demonstrating equipment and offering the chance of hands-on testing.

Throughout the day, speakers from a wide range of relevant fields will be giving short, focussed presentations on a number of subjects. From the technical aspects of cleaning to marketing and improving your business, there will be valuable advice from some of the most recognised and well respected experts in the industry.

Inside the exhibition hall there will be plenty to keep family and friends interested and entertained, including women's Interest stalls and services, activities for the children, competitions and plenty of prizes.

Hosted by Jamie Pearson (of Cleaning Systems UK) and John Bryden (of Bryden Enterprises and official event charity Kirsty's Kids), the night before the event is sure to be as thoroughly enjoyable as previous years. Food, drink and an all-round laugh, with the occasional work related chat breaking out. A great appetiser for the action-packed day to follow.

Thinking things through! Derek Bolton (Honorary Member)

o many people today, in all

walks of life, simply do NOT

think things through. Over the Syears I have sadly seen the outcome

of cleaning practices where things just

haven't been thought through

properly and the result is a damaged

item which then has to be paid for.

Recently I came across a wrinkled

carpet that had been treated with a

protective treatment. Now, we have

all carried out this sort of work at

some point, but

hopefully more

successfully than on this

job. Failure to identify

the carpet

construction/fibre

content led to all the

new carpets in the

house having to be

replaced.

My experiences with the Scotchcare Network of

yesteryear tend to make me not take things for

granted. It's so easy just to go sailing in with a

spray without taking into consideration the

construction of the item to be cleaned or, in this

case, treated.

The ability to diagnose the construction/fibres of

an item you are going to be working on is essential

in spite of those who glibly say that 'cleaning

carpets isn't rocket science'. Well, maybe not, but

a fundamental knowledge is an essential part of

the business. I am not going to

discuss the importance of test

techniques as they already appear

frequently enough within these

pages without me lecturing you all

too. However, I do wish people would

take the advice on board.

Fibre recognition, together with each fibre

characteristic, is so important and shouldn't be

ignored. I have included a couple of pictures of

upholstery fabrics where due care has NOT been

taken in considering the fibre characteristics of the

fabrics being cleaned.

The first (above to the left) is a fabric that

contains cellulosic fibres and has been left over-

wet (that's another story). The cushions have been

cleaned with an inappropriate chemical and then

stood on their edges to dry and the moisture has

wicked to the lowest point resulting in cellulosic

browning.

The second picture (directly below) is another

example of the use of inappropriate chemicals and

cleaning techniques being

used. Once again the result is

cellulosic browning and the

damaged furniture units had to

be re-covered. In both of these

instances these problems

simply shouldn't have

occurred.

Determining the fibre content

of fabrics is almost impossible

these days as there are so

many different fibres contained

within modern day fabrics. In

an attempt to discover each

individual fibre it would require

the use of all the testing

procedures, i.e. the burn test,

the microscopic test and the

solubility test… something that

would be impractical on site.

Because of this I tend to clean all fabrics as though

they are problem fabrics just to be in the safe side.

Dyes used on modern day carpets and upholstery

fabrics tend to be stable (with the exception of the

pH sensitive dyes used in some fabrics AND

carpets). Do the test to establish what you are

dealing with at the survey stage… that's if you

survey of course (whoops that's me being cynical

again…of course you do, don't you?)

However, colour can still pose a few problems for

us. The main one is loss of colour due to wear

abrasion (aka crocking). Another cause of colour

loss is, of course, the use of an inappropriate

chemical… so think it through!

The picture (bottom left) is of a suite that had to

be re-covered after being

damaged by a cleaning

technician.

The sad thing is that the

technician DID correctly

diagnose that there was

potentially a colour problem

so decided to 'dry clean' the

fabric instead of using a wet

process, but failed to

understand that it wasn't the

chemical that subsequently

caused the problem but the

technique he employed,

specifically when dealing

with the spots and stains. He

inadvertently replicated the

crock test which resulted in

colour loss on the areas

worked on.

Whenever delegates leave a training course it is up

to them whether they follow the procedures that

they are taught; the course tutor cannot be

standing at their sides making decisions for them

each and every day. Some listen to well-meaning

cleaners who relate their own experiences and

then attempt to emulate them. This is where my

'thinking things through' bit really comes in…

remember what was taught on your training

course and ask yourself the question 'is there a risk

here?'

GETBOOKEDUP - CLIENT DATABASE MARKETING SOLUTIONSGetBookedUp is software specifically designed by, and for, the carpet, furnishing and hard floor care industry. It helps businesses of every size market better, quote clearer… and book more!

The developers of this product still run their own carpet cleaning company and, with over twenty five years in the industry, they know the challenges of running a successful business. That's why they developed this software… to make it systemised and easier.

[email protected]/store

[email protected]

They've grown and streamlined their own carpet cleaning business into a multi-van operation with admin staff by using the marketing tools built into the software.

Other carpet cleaners could see what a difference it had made to the developers' carpet cleaning business (especially in terms of an increase in their return on advertising spend and reduced administration) and, after repeated requests from those cleaners, in 2006 a decision was made to further develop the software and make it available to others within the same industry. Now, with hundreds of users, there is an edition to suit every size of business, from owner/operators through to multi-van operations with admin office support staff.

So, if you want to free up time by reducing and streamlining your administration, and want more money by marketing more effectively, this could be the solution for you.Tel: 01405 813665 E: Web:

KIRSTY'S KIDSNCCA members John and Jan Bryden are at the Carnival again this year with their charity Kirsty's Kids.

The charity is currently working with underprivileged children to teach them the benefits of learning to create things themselves, using the materials around them, and how satisfying this can be.

John has recently created his own loom and is using it to weave carpet utilising traditional weaving methods. This project has now become an integral part of his current work with Kirsty's Kids.

At the Carnival this year John will be displaying his loom, so if you are interested in learning how to hand-knot your own rugs with your own handmade loom (and John's current work with Kirsty's Kids), pop along to their stand and have a chat.Web:

THE ULTIMATE FLOOR SANDING COMPANYThe Ultimate Floor Sanding Company was formed in Ireland 2007 by Terry Guilford in response to the massive increase in wooden flooring during the boom years. The company was formed using experience gained in the Galway region of Ireland by Terry with his previous company, Airc Flooring, who specialised in the sales, fitting and finishing of wooden flooring. The decision to go floor sanding only was made when the benefits of dust free machinery became obvious and by marketing this idea the company grew to thirteen outlets across Ireland.

In 2011 Ultimate Floor Sanding entered the UK market using an Affiliate network strategy, recruiting and training existing floor maintenance experts in floor sanding and then going on to promote and support them with the aid of a leading German

A guide to customer complaints (part seven) Lewis Scroby

NCCA Standards and Fair Trading Officer, Lewis Scroby, continues his series on dealing with customer complaints. This month's article focuses on unavoidable complaints and NCCA procedure.

ollowing the previous focus on surveying and F inspecting items to identify potential issues, it should be acknowledged that some problems are destined to arise regardless of how much or how well you prepare. As I'm sure you all know, there can be several phenomena encountered during and after the cleaning of even the most standard carpets and soft furnishings.

Patchiness, distortion and many other types of damage have been reported to the NCCA and sometimes there appears to be absolutely no explanation as to how or why it has occurred. In these situations it is important to understand the position that you are in. You may not specifically be responsible for the issue, but you certainly still need to address the matter and ensure the customer is made aware.

Several members have put themselves in difficult situations by not accepting responsibility for an unexpected occurrence during or following cleaning. We obviously appreciate that unexplained damage and other phenomena can arise without any fault on the part of the technician or cleaning process. Unfortunately, however, these are a risk of the job. You may not have to accept liability, but you do still need to accept responsibility to either resolve the issue or appease the customer.

This is the main reason the Association insists all our members have comprehensive insurance cover. We try to assist all members to become the best cleaner they can be, but also accept that there are some things you can't account for. These unexpected situations can be the most difficult to accept and put right, but the best cleaners will deal with problems as well as they deal with carpets.

NCCA Chief Executive and Technical Director, Paul Pearce, has given up a lot of free time (like many former Directors, including John Claydon and Robert Olifent, along with current members of the Board) to assist members in dealing with complaints. Paul is the first point of contact within the Association for

technical advice and has helped many companies address, solve and avoid issues with customers.

It is a duty of the Association to assist both members of the NCCA and members of the public when a dispute arises. Often, if there is a complaint from a customer, members will respond accordingly and quickly to resolve the matter. Sometimes, however, these situations escalate and a formal complaint is made to the NCCA. Using the advice in previous articles, many complaints can be avoided or settled before they become disputes but, if the two parties cannot agree, the Association is available to arbitrate.

The complaint procedure that is usually followed is to request both parties provide a full written report on the situation. This is then reviewed in the office and at least one of the NCCA Directors is involved to provide advice. If further information is required, either, or both, parties are consulted and the Association gathers as much information as possible before proceeding with an investigation. Once the issues have all been identified it is important for us to determine whether there was any fault or negligence on the part of the member. If so, we will hold them responsible to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of the customer (within reason obviously); if not, however, we will inform the customer of our position and confirm that we are unable to uphold the complaint.

In some situations it is unfortunately very difficult to determine whether the member is responsible. In these cases we usually try to assist in a negotiation to resolve the matter. Though we always attempt to assist in reaching a reasonable conclusion, sometimes neither party can agree and the matter is taken out of our hands. Disputes almost always become more problematic when parties cannot agree and complaints are harder and harder to resolve as communication breaks down. Remaining calm and professional in these situations (even when a customer is not) is vital in ensuring the complaint does not escalate.

Next month the series will continue with resolving complaints and the various outcomes.

Underfoot and overlooked, cleaning the Cragside carpetPart three - Product testing Glyn Charnock

In February this year, the National Trust Textile

Conservation Studio in Norfolk collected a 19th

Century Templetons chenille dining room carpet

(from Cragside House in Northumberland) for

conservation.

The carpet first needed to be cleaned in order to

avoid additional damage and, following our

successful tour of the Conservation Studio last

year, NCCA Director Glyn Charnock was

personally asked if he could undertake the

cleaning work to be done.

In June we featured the first in a series of

articles on Glyn's time spent cleaning this delicate

and historic carpet. This month we continue with

investigation into the cleaning solutions to be

used... and the carpet finally arrives.

So, after almost a day of investigating cleaning

methods, we worked out a system and it was time

to look at which products were going to be most

effective.

I have quite a range of products in my armoury, as

I like to have different options for different

situations. I regularly use products from all the

major manufacturers and I test products as I find

out about them, looking for something more

effective, easier to use or safer, so I was confident I

would have the right product in my van for cleaning

the Cragside carpet. Obviously some of my products

were not suitable, such as those with a higher pH,

but I was sure there were at least three or four

possible options.

The conservators also have a range of products

they regularly use, so we decided to pick what we

each thought would be most effective and test

them side by side using the methods we had

already worked out. I had settled on a Woolsafe

approved Oriental rug product from one of the

NCCA corporate member suppliers. The

conservators' product was a non-ionic surfactant

(bought direct from the manufacturer - a large

multinational chemical company) mixed with a

suspension agent.

I follow the supplier's instructions regarding the

dilution rates for products. The conservators take a

more rigorous approach, testing each batch of

surfactant to work out its critical mycelle

concentration (CMC), as this can vary from batch to

batch. They then use the product at three to five

times CMC, as this is the most effective dilution

requiring least rinsing to remove excess product.

The test carpet was a piece of old wool Axminster

which had been laid in my Father's garage for about

ten years, so was very heavily soiled. My Oriental

rug shampoo did produce a slightly better visual

result than the conservators' product, but they

checked the contents and it was unfortunately

rejected. I had a look through my van and came up

with a couple of other suggestions, but these were

also not considered suitable.

Surprised at the rejection of all my preferred

products, I asked what criteria the conservators use

and discovered how strict they are. Obviously no

Cationic surfactants or oxidising or reducing agents

were allowed but, because they are looking to

preserve items for at least the next fifty years, and

the longer term effects of many cleaning agent

additives are unknown, they are incredibly strict.

Not one of my products was acceptable, and those I

thought we would be able to use were rejected

mostly because they contained perfumes. These are

apparently all oil-based and even the minute

amounts present after

cleaning could possibly

result in increased

adhesion of soil to the

fibres, making future

cleaning more difficult.

Another surprise for me

was that Sodium Tri Poly

Phosphate (STPP, also

known as microsplitters or

detergent free cleaners)

were rejected. It turns out

that the conservators also

have a slightly different

view of pH to that

traditionally taken by the

cleaning industry. They are

obviously keen to avoid

high pH products, but are

also more wary of lower pH

products than we are. They

confirmed that even

slightly acidic products can

accelerate the ageing process, particularly in

cellulosic fibres like cotton and jute.

I did try ringing a few of my suppliers for advice on

whether perfume-free versions of their products

were available, but unfortunately none could come

up with the right 'solution' for this project. It was

ultimately decided that the products the

conservators were familiar with would be used. As it

turned out, the product chosen by the

conservators wasn't the one used during testing,

but an alternative that went against one of the

cleaning fundamentals we teach.

It is generally accepted that chemical activity

increases at higher

temperatures, so hotter

cleaning solutions and

rinse water provide a

better clean. The

conservators are very

wary of heat as it can

easily cause damage,

even at what we would

consider to be very low

temperatures, and the

chosen product had to be

kept cool (below 21°C) or

it became cloudy and was

much less effective.

Storing the cleaning

solution in a bucket of

iced water was a new one

on me!

I thought that all I had

to do now was wait for

the carpet to arrive, teach

the conservators how to

perform the clean and leave them to it, so I

offered to lend them my spare portable extraction

machine. The conservators clean all manner of

textiles, but had never taken on the cleaning of

such a large, dense piled carpet. Along with their

unfamiliarity with the process and equipment,

Ksynia decided it would be safer for me to be

there and, much to my surprise, asked me to

undertake the cleaning for them.

This raised the problem of how to price the job.

We agreed on a day rate, as we didn't have a clue

how long it would take. There was a schedule in

place for the delivery of the carpet, so I booked four

days in my diary, as a guess, and the waiting began.

Two of the conservators went to Cragside house to

supervise the lifting and packing of the carpet ready

for transport, which was to take two weeks. Due to

its size and delicate condition, turning it over to roll

it face out was a major undertaking. They had to

find a roller long and stiff enough to support the

carpet and work out a route to get it out of the

house - no mean feat as, once rolled, it was over six

metres long and almost a metre in diameter. Along

with the roller and packing materials it took eight

people to safely lift and manhandle.

The process of packing the carpet for transport

revealed some unexpected secrets. Cragside was

the first house in the UK to have electricity installed,

and this runs off a generator driven by a water

wheel. When the carpet was lifted, some electrical

sockets were discovered in the floor under the

carpet which no one knew about and, of more

concern to the conservators, there was a large water

stain on the underside of the carpet which could

indicate weaker areas in the backing.

The face of the carpet was carefully vacuumed

prior to turning over and it was then rolled with

layers of acid free tissue, to protect the surface of

the carpet, and sheets of Kapoc padding to help

prevent crushing of the pile and other damage.

Finally, wrapped in bubble wrap, it was ready for

transport. (Next month, the clean finally starts)
