news coming your way!
LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Back in 2005, when 40 community leaders came together to initiate Effingham County Vision 2020, Education was identified as one of the eight key elements of a healthy and balanced Effingham County. The focus of the Education “spoke” was to build a culture that encourages residents to become lifelong learners by creating an interest in education, utilizing our resources to develop the community as a classroom, increasing parental involvement in the schools, encouraging collaboration between schools, businesses and community leaders and encouraging development of curriculum to meet the current and future needs of our community.I think we’ve done pretty well in reaching those goals! We have implemented innovative curriculum in our high schools to educate students on everything from entrepreneurship to construction trades. We have helped create scholarship programs in each school district in the county so that every graduating high school senior has the opportunity to attend college or advanced training. We have also developed excellent collaboration between education and business to help students of all ages improve their skills and opportunities for future success. As we close in on 2020, the time is right to push forward with a new set of goals and initiatives that will lead Effingham County well into the future. On Thursday, September 22, we are bringing back Laural Manegre from The Pacific Institute to guide
us in refreshing, renewing and refocusing our commitment to improving Effingham County’s future. If you would like to be a part of this planning and development session, please give me a call. The Chamber’s education and training programs provide opportunities for businesses and their employees to improve their skills and abilities. Through online training, available 24/7/365, our new Tech Tuesday Lunch and Learns and more in depth seminars and educational programs, the Chamber offers a well-rounded professional development program that advances career and skill development and provides a competitive advantage. Information about upcoming professional development opportunities can be found on Page 5 and online at www.effinghamcountychamber.com. As we continue to look for new ways to be your valued network of business resources, we welcome your input, ideas and involvement.
Join us Saturday, January 21st for the Chamber Business Recognition Gala and help us kick off the
Chamber’s Centennial Year in style!
“Success is the result of knowing where you want to go and the changes that you need to make to get there. The road to success becomes a lot smoother when you have the tools to develop the attitude of success.”

OUR MISSION: TO CREATE A WORK READY COMMUNITY
Effingham County residents place a high value on education because of the opportunities it provides to strengthen our communities. Studies have shown that education and learning, not just in the traditional classroom setting, but in all aspects of our lives, enhances our social interaction, active citizenship and personal development. From pre-school programs to the public and parochial grade and high schools, and on to Lake Land College’s Kluthe Center for Higher
Effingham Regional Career Academy has elected its first Board of Directors.Education and Technology, Effingham County’s education system delivers quality academic programs and student activities for young and old alike. Innovative programs like the CEO class, health occupations, Construction Trades of Effingham County (CTEC), manufacturing skills and laptop learning initiatives among others, place Effingham County in the forefront of learning opportunities for the next generation. The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has been a key player in expanding educational opportunities for Effingham County residents. We have been working with the local schools to increase technical training opportunities for students and adult learners, as well as working with the business community to create education and training programs to address the skilled labor and workforce readiness needs of the current and future workforce.
The Chamber’s Workforce Readiness Committee completed its first employer survey that focused on Workforce Readiness Skills, more commonly known as soft skills. Soft skills are interpersonal skills desired by employers in: communication, language, personal habits, management, leadership & similar traits that characterize relationships with other people.
*Highest Priority Certificates from employer feedback at the August First Friday Luncheon. Certificates will be offered in classes through higher ed, the Chamber and other training avenues to better prepare workers for the jobs.

Joining forces helps us maximize the resources available to our students to help them get a jump start on their career paths and to key in on the development needs of incumbent workers by creating pathways to sustainable employment. This collaboration has led to the formation of the Effingham Regional Career Academy, a state-of-the-art career and technical training center that will accommodate a high school curriculum, along with technical skills training for present and returning adult workers. The proposed physical structure will be about 36,000 square feet in size. The addition to the Lake Land Kluthe Center will encompass flexible classrooms, hands-on lab and wet lab space.
While we continue to work toward funding a new facility, efforts are underway to identify collaboration within existing high school programs so that students across Effingham County will have access to a wider variety of technical programs starting in the Fall of 2017. Local school districts are being proactive in developing additional avenues to share resources by designing programs that are open and available to all county students. Certificate- level technical and workforce readiness skills training will strengthen innovation, competitiveness, new partnerships and prepare citizens for increased employment opportunities. These programs have been identified to begin in the Fall of 2017.

During the more than 30 years that Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois has operated Crossroads Cancer Center in Effingham, expansion of both services and facilities has kept the clinic up to date on the latest research and technology to help their patients get the care they need when
they need it.
The 20 doctors in the system, and 6 that work here in Effingham, alongside their 50+ employees, are recognized leaders in the industry and have been awarded nearly 20 certificates of recognition for their outstanding research. Their state-of-the art equipment and treatment methods is supported by advanced research available
through the National Cancer Institute.
Recently, the treatment center was selected for the Oncology Care Model, one of the first physician-led specialty care models. Practices participating in the five-year Oncology Care Model will provide treatment following nationally recognized clinical guidelines for beneficiaries undergoing chemotherapy, with an emphasis on
person-centered care.
Their commitment to the area and serving the needs of their patients includes establishment of a Charitable Fund to enhance community awareness of breast cancer, education and support throughout Southern Illinois. They provide funding for the local National Cancer Survivors Day , Relay for Life and scholarships for students in oncology-related health care
programs.

With more than 100 years under their belt, Farnsworth Group, Inc. continues to operate under the premise that the client is their first
priority.
Since the late 1800s when a local land surveyor traveled from community to community providing services to municipalities, Farnsworth Group has established itself as a leader in providing consulting, engineering, architecture, asset management and sustainability through their
national network of 450 professionals.
In June, the company was certified as a great workplace by the independent analysts at Great Place to Work, based on extensive ratings provided by its employees in anonymous surveys and also was named in the Top 500 of the top engineering firms in the US by the Engineering News Record, ranking at #170. They received a special achievement award earlier this year for engineering excellence for design of the new City
of Mahomet wastewater treatment plant.
Farnsworth and its team of professionals invest in facilities and employment as well as being active in the communities they serve. In Effingham County, they are active in churches and community events, serve on various boards, sponsor local events and support the Chamber with sponsorships, involvement and attendance at many events and with various Chamber
programs.
