Calling All Hands on Deck!! The board of directors is in need of a committee to chair our very fun 007 in Monte Carlo Casino party! This is a great party for our casino crowd as it is all for fun and a great way to learn the games! We have all the tables and accessories, so the costs of the event are minimal. Think about that: we have a craps table, roulette wheel, black jack tables, Texas Hold’em tables, and all the chips and accessories!! Let’s do this!! Please talk to your friends along with other members and form a group to make this event happen! If no one comes forward this month, unfortunately the event will be canceled for this year. We need you!

Commodore’s Corner

How about that “Horse & Pony Series”! Seriously, it’s my favorite race of the year, and I’ll bet I’m not alone! It’s so popular in fact that we ran out of “Pony” boats (Toppers).

As most of you know, I’m a relative newcomer to the club. Perhaps that allows me the license to see things a bit differently.

After a brief struggle with veteran members of the club to keep this race series alive, our amazing Vice Commodore Kevin Arndt squashed the naysayers, created options, collaborated with the skippers, and resolved all issues to bring home a superb finish to this awesome series! Three cheers for Kevin! So, if I’ve tickled your fancy on all the drama, you can read-up on all the excitement and drama at www.nawiliwiliyachtclub.org/.

Lease Renewal Update —Support from the Community

The open door we had with DLNR appeared to be closing. But … never fear, because a host of wonderful people came to the rescue and provided inspiration to many on Kaua`i and the State as a whole. Many thanks and deep appreciation go out to Doug Tiffany, Roger Cable, Shaun Lehman, and Jim Saylor for their relentless pursuit of victory and foresight into new territory. We now have legal counsel … and the Governor’s office very recently asked the Land Board to allow for a special review of our petition through KSA for State Lands and for direct negotiations outside of public auction. My spirit tells me we are in good hands. However, there’s much to do. Meanwhile, please know that I’ve just signed a letter requesting a continuance of our month-to-month lease going beyond September 1, 2017. This provides time to arrange for petition directly to the Land Board next month. FYI – Suzanne Case, BLNR Chair, agreed to place our petition on their agenda in a very-near-future Land Board meeting. Prayers for success and harmony are well appreciated!

A hui hou,Commodore Fred Styer

Summer CampsThe mayhem of a KSA summer has dwindered down to a peaceful memory. KSA ran two beginner sailing camps, one art camp, one science camp, and one SART (sailing and art camp). All camps were a week long. Approximately 70 kids went through our summer programs. A special mention must be made to Astrid and Risa who ran their own sailing camps this summer and to all of the helpers that worked tirelessly to keep everyone safe and having fun on the water. Helpers: Ben, Lexi, Naya, Liliana, Zoey, Hannah, Sierra, and Nalani.

New Coach BoatsKSA’s two new coach boats arrived from California in good condition. The boats were desperately needed to support KSA’s ever growing STEM and Marine Biology programs, as well as the advancing skill level of our sailors in rough water. Acquiring the boats was

made possible by many generous supporters. We would like to give a special Mahalo to Pasha Shipping who donated shipping from California to O`ahu. We are looking forward to the new possibilities the boats bring to our program. There has even been some talk about an adaptive scuba diving club!

Figuring out how to sit in a boat can be confusing: “ Is it the legs or the head that go by the boom?” (Photo by Charlotte)

Introducing Our New Rear Commodore Bill Georgi

Aloha!Just a note to introduce myself to those of you who don’t yet know me. I’m Bill Georgi, newly appointed as the NYC Rear Commodore. I’ve been a member of NYC for the better part of 20 years, and have previously served on the board as Fleet Captain, Port Captain, Treasurer, and Director. I’m working on restoring a 70’s vintage Snapdragon (28’ LOD, English-built, twin keel) sailboat. I have been happily married to JoAnne for over a quarter of a century; we are also a bridge team, and plan to play (allbiet at a medium level) in the North American Bridge Championships after Thanksgiving. Between us, JoAnne and I have 7 kids, 22 grandkids, and 9 great-grandkids. We’ve had 6 exchange students and 17 foster kids (specialized in teen sibling groups). In addition to sailing and competitive bridge, I enjoy being Santa, bicycling, writing (screenplays/novels), and moviemaking.

Quiz 8Boat S is rounding the windward mark on starboard tack onto a run. As she is rounding the mark, Boat P is approaching the mark on port tack. Boat S bears away around the mark, and as her transom leaves the mark astern, her boom touches the port shroud of P. There is no damage or injury. Both boats protest.

You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this?

Answer to QUIZ 8 Boat S is penalized. Boat S is “leaving” the mark and Boat P is “approaching” the mark; therefore rule 18, Mark-Room, does not apply between them (see rule 18.1(c)). S is the right-of-way boat under rule 10, On Opposite Tacks. But as she is changing course, she is required to give P room to keep clear under rule 16.1, Changing Course, which she fails to do. As rule 18 does not apply, S is not entitled to mark-room. Therefore P does not need to anticipate that S will bear away around the mark, and S cannot be exonerated for breaking rule 16.1 under rule 21, Exoneration.

Both boats are required by rule 14, Avoiding Contact, to avoid contact if reasonably possible. S clearly breaks rule 14; but as she is the right-of-way boat at the time, she cannot be penalized under rule 14 because the contact does not cause damage or injury (see rule 14(b)). By the time it is clear to P that S is not going to give her room to keep clear under rule 16.1, it is not reasonably possiblefor her to avoid the contact; therefore she does not break rule 14 (see rule 14(a)). Answers to Dave Perry’s 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes are based on The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016. For a comprehensive explanation of the rules, read Dave Perry’s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2016, which is available from US Sailing: 1 (800) 877-2451 or www.ussailing.org.
