August 2017 Special Offering

Mt. Selinda Hospital, Zimbabwe

Global Ministries has issued an S.O.S. to member churches for funds to support doctor salaries at Mt. Selinda Hospital in Zimbabwe. Fortunately, our August Special Offering is already scheduled for Mt. Selinda. The urgent problem is that government funding for doctor salaries is insufficient to attract them to this difficult location with its huge and far-flung practice. The trip from one distant area is so dangerous and difficult that rather than having patients attempt it, the doctor visits there once a month.

Daisy Dube Home for orphaned children.

The Mt. Selinda Hospital complex consists of the hospital itself, the School of Nursing, the Daisy Dube Home for orphaned or abandoned children, and the expectant mothers' shelter. Because the trip for delivery is too difficult to attempt as labor begins, mothers come to the shelter ahead of the expected birth date to be assured of help. Often this is the only prenatal care these mothers will have. They will stay at the shelter for a week after delivery to insure that they will go home problem-free.

More financial support is needed for every aspect of this medical service. There is a shortage of medicine. There is a shortage of food: with children at the Daisy Dube Home often having only one meal a day. But most important of all, there is a need for at least two physicians for this heavy and far-ranging practice. We hope that our August offering can be of help in this difficult situation.

Expectant mothers waiting for delivery dates.

UCC General Synod passes emergency

resolution on climate change

Church and Home Print Edition, August 2017 Page 3

Seizing the opportunity to be a prophetic voice in a time of peril, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ passed a resolution on July 2 entitled, “The Earth is the Lord’s— not ours to wreck—Imperatives for a new moral era.”

The resolution addresses the crisis of climate change, in response to the recent withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris Accord. It calls Christians into action to work for positive change and resist the efforts of those who ignore or deny the dangers of climate change.

Rev. Jim Antal, president and conference minister for the Massachusetts Conference United Church of Christ, and the author of the resolution, addressed those present for the vote, saying, “The climate crisis is an opportunity for which the church was born. This sets the stage for engagement and hope. This is a proc-lamation of truth and the love of God’s gift.”

Here is an excerpt from the resolution :

Let us proclaim truth in the public square. We are now living in a John 18:37 moment, in which we must hold to the truth we understand from our two Testaments and from the sacred book of nature, recognizing that when truth is compromised, only power prevails.

Let our communities of faith be bold and coura-geous as we address one of the greatest moral chal-lenges that the world has ever faced.

Let us commit to resist all expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure and demand new sources of renewa-ble energy that are accessible to all communities.

Let us do all we can to change America’s under-standing of the story that our generation is writing. Let us begin a new story—a story that is not de-pendent on fossil fuel or on wealth for the few and misery for the many.

Accepting that it is up to us—we the people—whether in the streets, at the State House, in the halls of power, with our phones, emails, technology and social media, by committing our time, financial resources and pray-ers—let us pour ourselves out to bend the moral arc of justice, with joy in our hearts, beauty in our sights, and hope for the children.

Additional information, including the full text of the resolution and links to press coverage, can be found on the Massachusetts Conference UCC website (http://www.macucc.org/earthislords).

Share the Harvest table now open Gardeners! Our Share the Harvest Table allows us to add to our Hunger Outreach programs for people in need in the Seattle area. Bring in some veggies or flowers that you pick for our Harvest Table this summer! Not a gardener? Help yourself to the deli-cious home-grown vegetables and give generously!

The table will be operating through the summer. Think about volunteering to be at the table on a Sun-day in the summer when you come to church. Stop by the table to sign up or to buy. You may also contact Gretchen Hull at [email protected]. Help us feed the hun-gry by giving to this very important mission.

Sharing Your Migration Story What stories of movement have shaped you? Begin-ning in September, our worship life will focus on the concept of migration—how it shaped the lives of our spiritual ancestors, and how it shapes our lives today. As a visual anchor for our worship space, we plan to suspend mobiles of migrating birds overhead in the sanctuary. The individual birds are being created by you, members and friends of UCUCC, and they will tell your own migration story.

Have you started creating your bird? Cardboard bird shapes are availa-ble for you to pick up in the church office at any time or in the narthex on Sunday mornings. Dec-orate this bird to tell your own mi-gration story. What moves have shaped your life or the lives of oth-ers in your family? Decorate the bird in whatever way you wish -

with photocopies of photographs, drawings, or your written ideas or stories of migration.

If you would like to work on your bird in a com-munity setting, come to the chapel after worship on August 6. We will have basic materials for you to use to create your bird – colored pencils, markers, printed images, glue, etc. Bring personal photos or oth-er materials for your bird with you that day.

All completed birds need to be returned to Kris Garratt's mailbox in the church office on or before August 27. Questions? Contact Kris Garratt at [email protected]

Considering a stewardship line for our

Covenant

~ Greg Turner, [email protected], Stewardship/Administration Rep. UCUCC Church Council.

Each Sunday when we say our church Covenant together, we are affirming our values and reminding ourselves of our commitments. The Covenant includes statements about inclusivity, parish care, spiritual growth and social justice. Interestingly, it does not reflect any values around the concept of stewardship.

There is a move afoot to change this. We are renewing discussion about what stewardship means, and what elements could be added to our Covenant. We have been holding a series of discussions that will continue through September. We would really like to hear your thoughts on this. How do you understand the concept of stewardship? What kind of wording do you think would be appropriate to include in the Covenant?

Because our Covenant is such an important part of our iden-tity as a congregation, adding a new element requires both a robust process of open discussion, and a Congregational vote.

A group of University UCC members has come together to consider the subject and provide guidance. Members of the group include Jerry Landeen, Joyce Jackson, Sven Peterson, Margaret Stine, Tom Furin, Dave Powell, Emily Morishima, Betty Spieth-Croll, Candace Tkachuck, Mike Emerson, Loyce Ong’udi, Laurel Colescott and Lisa Coleman. We have also assembled a team of three experienced writers who will synthesize the ideas offered up into a draft addition to the Covenant: Deb Jarvis, Mary Kollar and Kathryn Robinson.

Since mid-July we have held three meetings in the Chapel after worship where we have received excellent feedback regarding what stewardship means to mem-bers. We will have two additional gatherings. One after worship on Sept 10, and second just before the Sept 20 Council meeting at 5:30 pm. The hope is

that after general consideration, we could arrive at wording for a new line to add to the Covenant by the September Church Council meeting, and a Congrega-tional vote at our annual all-church Budget Meeting, Nov 19. Please contact Greg with any thoughts you have.

Mwanzo offering a huge success Loyce Ong’udi and the Mwanzo Board are deeply grateful for the generosity of the University UCC con-gregation, who dug deep in donating over $18,000 dur-ing this year's April Special Offering. What a joyous demonstration of your commitment to our work, in particular the ongoing construction of the Grades 1-8 primary school!

With your financial support, later this year Loyce will be returning to Rabuor to proceed with the next phase of the work: construction of the second floor exterior and walls, and roof.

Over the next six months the Mwanzo Board will be challenging itself and our donors to raise an additional $45,000 to fully complete the second floor and, in doing so, complete the school construction.

Mwanzo will be sharing stories bi-weekly during the

coming months to introduce youour faithful, gener-

ous community of donorsto Mwanzo (Kenya) staff members, teachers, and, in particular, our beautiful schoolchildren. It is a path of shrinking our world through nurturing the humanity and potential in each person who walks this road with us.

Through your support, we reaffirm that Jesus's mercy still marches across our world!

Lecture Series news

Church and Home Print Edition, August 2017 Page 6

~ Betty Spieth-Croll Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the Wittenberg Castle Church door on October 31, 1517. In doing so, Luther proved that authority could be questioned, the Church could be changed, and truth could be under-stood historically. How does this legacy find meaning today, 500 years later? Please join us Nov. 3 – 5 for thisWestar Institute Jesus Seminar on the Road (JSOR) with speakers Bernard Brandon Scott and Jarmo Tarkki. Watch for details and registration information to come.

Bernard Brandon Scott (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A charter member of the Jesus Seminar, he is the author of several books including The Real Paul (2015) and The Trouble with Resurrection (2010).

Jarmo Tarkki (Ph.D., University of Helsinki) is Senior Pastor of the Finnish Lutheran Church of California and Texas (ELCA), Adjunct Professor of Theology at California Lutheran University, Teaching Fellow in Philosophical Theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and author of several books on the philosophy of religion.

Bob Fitzgerald Fund Update

The new Bob Fitzgerald Speakers Fund was announced at The Lecture Series 10th Anniversary luncheon in February to honor one of our program’s co-founders and to keep The Lecture Series sustainable into the future. Since then, many have contributed to the fund, helping to make sure we can keep speakers like Brandon Scott and Jarmo Tarkki coming to UCUCC. We launched the fund with a $5,000 anony-mous matching grant and a second major gift of $3000. The matching grant was successful, with over 50 other individual donations from $1 to $500.

These new funds will be used to pay for speaker fees, travel, and other expenses incurred when putting to-gether lecture weekends. Ticket prices have never fully covered the cost of putting on Lecture events. Thus, the Bob Fitzgerald Fund is a critical means toward

sustaining The Lecture Series’ mission to bring leading Christian and non-Christian theologians, writers, speak-ers, professors and others to the Seattle area. The new funds also mean that ticket price is never a barrier to attendance.

Thank you to all who have made this possible through your donations. Donations are always welcome online, sent to the church office, or dropped in the offering plate on Sundays. Mark your donation ‘Bob Fitzgerald Fund.’

A Note from Bob:

“It was a pleasant surprise and a gracious honor for me to have the Bob Fitzgerald Lecture Fund established. Everyone knows that the ten years of lectures at our church took the loyal work of a planning committee, scores of volunteers, the Leadership Team and the out-standing coordination by Tina Michalak and Betty Spieth-Croll. Of course, the attendance by our church members, scores of folks from many denominations and others from all over the Pacific Northwest indicate a hunger for insight into our rich variety of religious traditions.

I continue to be excited about past lectures by some of the most outstanding theologians and Biblical scholars of our day who have presented challenging messages in our sanctuary. Those leaders changed my life, expand-ed my awareness of our Christian tradition and chal-lenged my thinking and my faith. I am so grateful for all the reminders that Jesus called us to a faith of justice and love for all people. Thank you to so many who have and continue to support our Lecture Fund as we continue our work together and expand the educational programs launched over 10 years ago. The future events will be inspirational, challenging and creative. I hope to see you.”

Children’s Ministry Update

Changes in treasured relationships… never an easy transition ~ Amy Roon

I’m usually fairly easy going about change. It’s not that I like it, but so little in my life has been solid and con-sistent that I’ve never had the chance to formulate much of an opinion about change.

But changes in relationships are always hard. And they’re especially hard for children and those who live and work with them.

It is with this truth that I write this Ministry Update for Christian Education. There have been quite a few changes in Children’s Ministry this past year, and in this month in particular. Almost a year ago now, we accept-ed the resignation of Rebecca Schmidt as Children’s Ministry Coordinator and welcomed Leslie Riley as Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator.

Leslie may apply for the permanent position, but work-ing for the church and community you’re a part of has its costs and she’s still thinking it over. Having a year-long Interim has been challenging, and it has revealed some important areas for program growth and illuminated how we can deepen our work with children as a whole church.

As I was returning from Family Leave with Baby D, it became clear that the recent abundance of babies required a temporary expansion of our Childcare Team on Sunday mornings. We are incredibly grateful that Lisa Coleman has stepped in to support our babies and their families in making full participation in Sunday morning community possible.

We don’t really anticipate two more sets of twins and more staff babies any time soon, so this position remains necessary, but temporary, as these babies grow into other classes. Yet another way change is the constant.

Earlier this Spring, many have noticed that our stalwart, spectacular and incredibly patient “Teacher Holly” has been not been with us. Thankfully, her hip replacement is done and she is healing well. We look forward to her return later this month. Need help contacting someone?

Want to be a part of an event, but there isn’t a mode of communication you are comfortable using (emails listed, but you only have a phone) contact the office 206-524-2322 or [email protected], and we will help.

Last to note–but definitely not least—many have heard or already been a part of saying goodbye to Theresa Fjermedal and her girls as they move to Syra-cuse to be closer to their family there. What you may not have fully realized is what an enormous im-pact this will have on our

toddlers and preschoolers and their families. Theresa and her girls have been pillars of support for this pro-gramming and are often go-to folks for other childcare support beyond Sunday mornings. We screen, pay and support our childcare workers of these youngest ages because we know that staffing rooms full of ever-changing volunteers for babies and toddlers who are just beginning to form relationships of trust is just not faithful for their mental, emotional and spiritual health. And Theresa has been a faithful presence for these children for many years now. She will be greatly missed.

Thankfully, Vanessa Lovejoy-Guron has already stepped forward to be an Interim Childcare provider in Theresa’s stead, as it will be helpful to have a new Director of Children’s Ministry participate in the hiring of a permanent replacement. Many of our kids already know Vanessa from church and Seabeck so this will help some.

This is a lot of change and turbulence. And we know that the thing that makes change hardest is when we’ve loved well and done good work making attachments. But, we can trust in our ability to do healthy grieving. And we can trust that love and attachment will be there for us again. Finally, we know and are comforted by the fact that Jesus is in the boat with us.

School Supply Drive in August Once again this year we are participating in the “Kids Need School Supplies” drive to benefit local low-income children. This is a great way to get our kids in-volved in helping other kids. We invite you to bring new school supplies to church throughout the month of August into early September. They will be collected in early September, in case you want to wait and hit the Labor Day sales. Please place them in the large box in the narthex to the left of the sanctuary doors.

Calculators in $10-$15 range for middle and high school age students

Summer Sunday activities for

children Bring the kids to church this summer! Before and after worship every Sunday kids can enjoy activities in the church lounge. During 10 am worship we offer infant care, two preschool classes, and an elementary class. The elementary class will alternate special sermon time on communion Sundays with lessons, crafts, and multi-week activity sessions the other Sundays. All children are welcome to remain in worship with their families if they prefer.

Family camping trip, Aug 11-13 Let’s go camping! We have reserved campsites at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island, WA for our annual family tent camping trip on Friday, Aug 11 through Sunday, Aug 13. Camping as a group is a great way to deepen connections. From helping set up tents to cooking together, hanging out around a campfire, swimming in the pool and exploring the area’s natural beauty, we will have fun building community. It’s a workable way for one parent or grandparent to take the kids or grandkids camping, as the “village” helps you out. There are still spots available. Please contact Leslie Riley to sign up

Kids—Lead the call to worship We are scheduling "Call to Worship" elementary kids for summer Sundays through September 3. Having children open and close our worship service every Sun-day is significant because it represents our commitment to children as worship leaders and it gives children the chance to take an active role in the worship ser-vice. This is a unique opportunity for children to speak a few simple lines in front of the congregation (filled with supporters!) and be showered with compliments afterwards! Please contact Leslie Riley to sign up today.

You are invited to teach Sunday

School Live into our covenant "to encourage each other in the growth of our minds and spirits" and become a Sunday school teacher or assistant. Your mentoring and care of our youngest members is vital for the continued suc-cess of our program. Remember, it takes a village! Do you miss having children’s energy and wonder in your life? This is a great way to get that benefit. We still need teachers in August and fall for infant, preschool and elementary age levels. Please contact Leslie Riley for more information.

Everett AquaSox baseball game,

Aug 27 Bring the whole family out to the ballpark to enjoy an Everett AquaSox Minor League Baseball Game! Every-one had so much fun at last year’s game, we want to go again. Join us on Sunday, Aug 27 in the afternoon when Everett plays Eugene. The game begins at 4:05 pm, so traffic should be reasonable. Buy general admis-sion tickets at the gate for $9 each and join us in the bleacher seats on the right field side. Hope to see you at this fun, easy summer outing!

Saturday, Aug 12 – Youth Family Hike Hike with friends and family in the beautiful Cascade Mountains. Join us for a moderately strenuous hike 4-6 miles to be sure to feed the soul. Please contact Dan Nelson if you are interested. Parents are welcome especially if you can drive!

Wednesday, August 30 – Teen Feed

mid or late August – Family Outdoor

Movie Night - Youthies, friends and families are invited to the Out-door Movie Night event at the home of Carol and Ed Coleman. Join us for a bbq and some games. Looking ahead

Sept 9, 9 am - noon

Racial Justice Workshop This past year, through our racial justice initiative, we have held workshops, trained facilitators and hosted small group conversations and activities. Those of us already involved in these efforts have generated some ideas for next steps. We know our ideas can all be improved; we know there are other ideas out there, and we want to hear them! We invite anyone inter-ested to join us in the lounge on Saturday, September 9 from 9 am to noon.

Diane Schmitz, who led our facilitator training ses-sions, will facilitate a discussion of goals and ideas large and small. Come find out where we are, and add your voice to enrich UCUCC’s racial justice initiative.

As the time gets closer, we will provide more specifics about the shape of the day.! If you have questions, please email Toni Higgs ([email protected]) or Ginger Warfield ([email protected]).

Book-It Theater Group forming ~ Kate Nelson

Book-it Repertory Theatre performs literary works transformed into theatrical productions. A group of us subscribes to these plays on the second Saturday night of the run. It's fun to sit mostly together and hash out the play with friends at the intermission. Sometimes we have dinner before the show. Some people from Hori-zon House are considering transport by Uber/Lyft.

Check out the plays at www.book-it.org, and call the box office at 206-216-0833. Tell them you want to join the UCC Theatre Group or Kate Nelson's Group. All plays but one are at the Center House at Seattle Center. The first show, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, is on Saturday, September 30. Maltese Falcon is a dinner theater production at Cafe Nordo in Pioneer Square – which can be dropped for a 4-play subscription with considerable savings.

Questions? Call or email me at: 206-397-3199, [email protected].

Sept 24

Grandmas Against Gun Violence GAGV works collaboratively with other groups to re-duce gun violence. They are an active, enduring, effec-tive organization that shows up, speaks up and stands up for gun sense and responsibility. They are grass roots with deep roots and, as grandmothers, they seek a safer world for their children and grandchildren. You are invited to the concert they are hosting in our Sanctuary at 6:00 pm.

September 30

Weaving our strengths:

Church Council of Greater Seattle Save the Date for the Fourth Annual Weaving Our Strengths Conference put on by the Church Council of Greater Seattle, and hosted in our building.

Weaving Our Strengths is a day-long conference of fel-lowship, inspiration, and skill-building to strengthen local churches’ efforts for the common good.

Sept 10 - Join us for Inquirers Lunch Interested in learning more about our church?

Inquirers Lunch takes a break over the summer until September 10. If you are interested in sitting down with a member of our Welcome Committee this summer, please contact Welcome Committee Chair Virginia Fel-ton 206-979-7539 or [email protected].

Sept 24 - Beyond the edges of our circles: gracious listening Coming this Fall: A series of three gatherings from 11:30-1:00 after Sunday Services (9/24, 10/1, and 10/8) to explore and practice how we listen beyond the edges of our comfortable circles. In times like these, it is critical that we learn to connect and work across lines of difference, whether the ‘other’ be family, neighbor, or fellow global citizen. Our facilitators will be Jeanne Strong and Karen Harding of the Center for Courage & Renewal.

Registration for up to 24 participants will begin in late August. For more information email Nathalie Gehrke ([email protected])

Senior Retreat, Sep 25-26 For those who cannot attend church…

and those who can.

Words of Wisdom ~ Carol Scott-Kassner

I love receiving short readings that invite me to reflect, to be called to a different place, or to be reinforced in what I’m already doing or want to do. Ruth Montgom-ery recently sent these. I hope you enjoy them.

Between the dawn and dusk of our being, let us be brave and loving. In our little passage through the light let us sustain and forward the human venture— in gentleness, in service, and in thought. Amen. ~ Carl Seaburg

Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart, one who looks for the best in people.

Leave people better than you found them. ~ Marvin J. Ashton

You must remember this…

as time goes by Each fall at UCUCC, people aged 55 and older are invited to gather for two days at the Rainbow Lodge near North Bend. The cost for the speaker, two days of food, one night of housing and lots of fun is $125 for a shared room with one person, or $140 for a single. Some scholarship funds are available.

This year’s retreat will be held on Sept. 25 and 26. We will explore the topic of what happens to our brain and memory as we age. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Sheri Mizumori, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington. Dr. Mizumori is an expert on many aspects of the aging brain, and is known to be a stimulating speaker. In addition to Dr. Mizumori’s talk, we will have some fun looking at how various biblical characters aged, and how they changed over time. On Monday evening, Alan Klokars will once again lead us down memory lane as we try to recall songs from earlier times in our lives. Words will be provided as we join in group sing-ing.

Attending our annual senior retreat is a great way to get to know others and deepen friendships in a comforta-ble and welcoming setting. We always have a great time listening, learning, sharing our ideas, visiting, exploring nature, and worshiping together. Watch for opportuni-ties to register in the Narthex on August 27, September 3, 10, and 17.

Don’t forget. We would love to have you join us!

Church & Home has been simplified as we begin to

better use our newly remodeled website.

See https://universityucc.org/whats-up-now/

to find all the updates news in the life of our church.

This summer we will relive the story of Creation and evolution as a source of wisdom and a force of hope and goodness that can never be stopped. The larger arc of creation calls our attention to the forces of nature that, even as we acknowledge the harm our human presence has caused, have wisdom, beauty, truth and power that is active-ly growing and adapting…that what is happening to our world is not just a by-product of our own actions but has its own relationship to God.
