Advocacy
Remember that you are able to bring along an
advocate or support person to any meeting that
you have with Compass.
An advocate is someone who is there to support you
or represent you and your interests in
circumstances where you feel this additional
support is required.
Please ask us if you need more information or
assistance with organising for an advocate.

luxurious. It also means every centre now has a good quality vehicle to
transport trainees to activities in their community. All thanks to Lisa
Bathersby who tirelessly built and led this campaign from start to finish. If you
get a chance give her a pat on the back for an incredible concept and great
job. Next up we have our Charity Golf Day on Friday 24th August with the
great people at Cricks Sunshine Coast again coming on board as our major
sponsor. This year will see our largest field of 32 teams and it should be an
amazing day.
On the subject of passionate support from our Corporate Partners I have to
mention John Cranley, John Williams and the team at Mix and Sea FM. Just in
these past few months they were our Platinum Sponsor for the Gala Dinner,
are one of the key media sponsors for the Charity Golf Day, have provided a
prize valued at $8,000 for auction on the day… and are the main sponsors of
our soon to be launched “Dollar a Day” project to raise funds for Compass
Assistance Dogs. In addition to the 2 Johns, Caroline and Mark, Barrat and
Jess and Todd and Sami along with the whole promo team have all put up
their hands to help us this year so a BIG THANK YOU on behalf of all the
trainees, families and staff for your care and generosity. Make sure you come
along to the Mix FM Outside Broadcast with Todd and Sami at the Maroochy
RSL from 3 – 6pm on the 17th of August where we launch the Assistance Dogs
month.
It’s been great to see the uptake for the NDIS pre-planning meetings. It’s a
huge effort by Helen, Jess and Jayne to attend all of these meetings with you
but they’re so passionate about making sure you get all the help you need in
this transition to a new funding scheme. I’m really proud of the way the
whole team are doing everything they can to make this as stress free as
possible. To those of you who may already have arranged a plan make sure
you still take advantage of a meeting. Speaking to parents who’ve done this
I’ve been told they learned a lot and in some cases had to make considerable
changes to their existing plan because Jayne was much more knowledgeable
in the area than others who’d assisted.
Thank you as always for your support and I look forward to catching up with
more of you over the coming months.
I don’t know about you but I’m loving the weather
at the moment… that mix of cold mornings and
warm sunny days is just so invigorating and I see
lots of smiles on the faces of the young people out
and about. I’ve been out and about the centres a bit
over the past couple of months and it’s been
wonderful to see the way they have been
developing.
Late last year
Compass was able to
purchase the venue
we’ve been based at
in Gympie and work
there has progressed
so well since then.
Floors sanded and polished, partitions for activity
areas erected, office space built in, green house
constructed, deck covered, new driveway & car
parking… and most recently they’ve taken
possession of their first commuter bus. This will be
a whole new start for Compass in that community
and I’m really proud that we will be in a position to
make a positive contribution to the lives of families
and people with disabilities living there.
It’s very much a case of ‘Watch this Space’ regards
the Caboolture centre. I was hopeful of being able
to provide some long awaited good news about
progress on a new centre down there… but it will
have to wait another week. Stay tuned…
I’m sure you’ve all
seen the myriad of
promotion around our
new buses. This was by
far our most ambitious
fundraising effort and
certainly our most
successful. We have recently taken possession of
two new Renault Master buses that are simply

Helen’s Happenings
Helen
Every August it seems to be my practice to reflect on how many days we have remaining in the year. So as not to disappoint you all, you will be interested to know officially we have 147 days remaining until Christmas. I have calculated this from 1st August, 2018.
July has been a fantastic month for Compass, as showcased in the July Newsletter, we are now the proud owners of two amazing commuter buses; the trainees are ecstatic about the new vehicles and enjoy travelling to and from their destinations in safety and comfort. The staff at the campus’s where the buses have been allocated have embraced the orientation training in the driving requirements of the vehicles.
Next month we will be announcing the dates of the Open Days to be held at each campus and/or enterprises in October. Once the dates are confirmed, please do not hesitate to invite all of your friends and acquaintances to attend these events. The Open Days provide the opportunity to promote Compass as the preferred pathway for young people exiting school at the end of 2018 and looking at opportunities for continued learning, development and enrichment.
Jess and I have been meeting with Jayne Southgate from Just Better Care and family members as part of the pre-planning process in preparation for the roll out of the NDIS in January 2019. These meetings have provided the space for families to explore the many options available to them under the NDIS framework. If you have not yet received contact from Alison at our Palmwoods Office who is responsible for scheduling the meetings, please contact her on 07 5457 3716. If you have any questions, feel free to call either Jess or myself at the Farm Office on 07 5445 9116.
I will be taking my annual leave from Monday 3rd September to Monday 17th September; this year I will be absent for two weeks. If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact either the Farm or Palmwoods Office/s and the professional management and staff will be able to assist you. I will look forward to catching up with you all on my return.
Until next month,
Warm regards,
Jess

We are also in search for a Cook for our Connections Café. If you or someone you know is looking to work with a fabulous team with a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, please send your resume to [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.
Sadly, this month we have said farewell to Kathy Charlson from the Caboolture Centre. We wish her all the best in the future.

with Lisa The weather may be getting a bit chilly but we are all staying warm and cosy
in our 2 new Master Renault buses that arrived. The Trainees have chosen
their seats and are very impressed with all the gadgets. Think the drivers are
pretty happy too !
We always love a celebrity visitor and this month we were lucky to have Caroline Hutchinson from 92.7 MIX FM visit the
Farm. Caroline was blown away with the incredible work being done in a supportive and creative environment. She
made lots of new friends and I think she may have bought a few items as well.

Sponsors from the Bus Campaign joined together for celebratory drinks at Rib Kai @ The Concept in Maroochydore to toast the 2 new
Renault Master buses from Cricks Sunshine Coast, fully signed and ready to go. Extra thanks to the Sunshine Coast Daily for buying 2
seats on the bus, JPG Design Print & Signs for signing both buses free of charge and also to AIB Insurance who have donated the cost
of insuring both buses. These generous businesses have added almost $20,000 to the bus campaign. Well done and thanks again.

Compass Farm
The Farm moves at a steady pace forward; in the past year and a half we have planted over 90 fruit and nut trees, extending the citrus orchard with mandarins and oranges. On cow hill we have planted macadamia, avocado, persimmon, plum and nectarines to add to the existing mango and custard apple trees. Up on the hill with the bamboo, we have planted around 1500 pineapple tops, 10 fig trees, mulberry, star fruit, elderberry, and tamarind trees. We also have 12 blue berry bushes and a number of rosella bushes. Down the hill we have multi small crop row with different types of beans, lettuce, rocket, beet root, corn, pumpkins etc. We also have a 50 metre bed of sweet potato runners and in the raised beds up the hill we have mature ginger and turmeric and sweet potatoes. Other beds down near the car park have small crops of tomatoes, herbs and turmeric. In the near future we are planting 3 citrus and 3 stone fruit trees between the office and the kitchen. We are also looking into growing coffee, tea, cocoa, olives and industrial cannabis (no THC). We are preparing a bed to put in 50 blueberry bushes and hopefully will be able to get 3 lychee trees to add to the existing mature lychee tree on the farm.

Our “Stares and Whispers” mosaic structure is finally finished and sitting outside our Farm Art entrance; and our mandala painting put on the shed wall in our garden. Many trainees contributed to these pieces but a huge effort by Cavell, Shaun, Damien and Genna. Thank you and jobs well done! Michelle - Farm Art

Harvest Kitchen
The introduction of the second team into Harvest Kitchen 10 months ago has dramatically changed the way in which
Harvest Kitchen operates. It has made us more efficient, more capable, and more fun! It’s given us the opportunity to
embrace some more rewarding programs as a team, some of which have been implemented over the last two terms.
Around the World with Harvest Kitchen is well and truly up and running, and is a more
complex lunch program put together, and executed by some of the Trainees who work in
HK. There is great enjoyment in researching the recipes, understanding cultural differences,
language and even listening to the music! A lot of passion and work goes into this event
each week and we are very proud of how it is progressing. So far we’ve been to Italy, U.S.A,
Tropical Islands (Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Cuba) and China!
Another program we have been working on putting together is the 4 Week 5:2 Fasting Challenge. This is a program
available to Farm Trainees to assist with better health, fitness and weight. The Challenge kicks off on August 13th and
there will be weekly events/activities to support the Challenge! More about this one next month.
The Jams and Chutneys are still continuing with Cricks, and keeping us busy. Lunches
continue throughout the week with a different menu available each day, all tailored to the
skill sets of each group of Trainees each day. We even get to make hot chocolates for
morning tea on Wednesdays.
Always open to any suggestions or feedback regarding the menus! Get in touch if you have
anything you would like to contribute!
We would also like to welcome Alex to the HK Team. He will be working with the Jam/Chutney Team every Thursday!
Kylie will continue to work with the Team Monday – Wednesday. Welcome Alex!

Compass Gympie
Break-up Day last term saw Gympie Compass visit the Air Museum in Caloundra, very interesting dis-
plays. Fish and chips by the beach.
A local hospitality training company has offered our team free morning tea for 6 weeks! So it is
Zumba and then a fine demonstration of
Hospitality service straight after. The trainees are treated like VIP’s by the students so it is smiles all
round.
Gympie Compass has been the recipient of a Fiat Bus from Head Office so we are now a very visual
presence around G-Town!

Compass Palmwoods
The Palmwoods trainees were very excited to arrive to
the centre for the start of Term 3 and find a brand new
bus waiting for them.
It has some great features such as plenty of room and
we can all stand up in it. There is a reverse camera,
satellite navigation and CD.MP3 and multimedia player.
We have all returned fresh and ready for Term 3 and
were able to celebrate Cameron’s birthday on the first
day back.
Tuesday’s group have introduced
train travel to their program
travelling from Palmwoods to
Nambour for their literacy session.
This has been met with much
excitement for trainees and their
families

Compass Caboolture The Caboolture team have been visiting and enjoying spending time at the
Whiteridge Farm each week. There was some interest in doing some volunteer work
at the farm and we are grateful the groups’ idea was accepted by the owner. We will
start this new program next week.
The chicken program is well
underway for the term with a
focus on the Auracuana breed.
These chickens lay green eggs
which are very pretty.
