2019-20 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide Now Available

NASHVILLE --- The 2019-20 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide has arrived. The guide is avail-able at all Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency offices and will be distributed at license vendors throughout the state.

The guide is also available online. Users may access the new interactive, mobile-friendly, eregula-tions site, http://www.eregulations.com/tennessee/hunting/ or download the full PDF document as in years past. Both options are available on the agency website at tnwildlife.org.

There are several important changes for the 2019-20 hunting and trapping seasons. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was detected in Tennessee in December 2018 in Fayette, Hardeman, and Madison counties. As a result, a number of changes apply to southwestern Tennessee counties and are out-lined in detail in the guide.

Statement from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Supporting the Introduction of the Re-covering America's Wildlife Act

Washington D.C. --- The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies strongly supports the introduction of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act. This bipartisan legislation would dedicate $1.3 billion in existing revenue annually from the U.S. Treasury to State Fish and Wildlife Agencies to implement their State Wildlife Action Plans and an additional $97.5 million for tribal fish and wildlife managers to conserve fish and wildlife on tribal lands and waters. State Wildlife Action Plans are congressionally mandated plans outline proactive solutions to conserve those species in greatest need and prevent wildlife from becoming threatened or endangered. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) announced the introduc-tion of this bipartisan bill today in Washington D.C.

“Our nation’s fish and wildlife are among its most valuable resources, along with clean air, water, healthy for-ests and agricultural lands that support all of us,” stated Ed Carter, President of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and Executive Director of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. “Today we find our-selves facing wildlife species declines that could alter our children’s and grandchildren’s opportunities to enjoy these resources. By investing in our State Wildlife Action Plans, which contain prioritized actions for restoring and managing the most imperiled species within our states’ borders, we will be ensuring future generations can enjoy our rich wildlife heritage. In essence, we are performing preventative maintenance, addressing con-cerns before they become a crisis. It is by far the most economical way to proceed and the chance of success is exponentially greater.”

“Bold solutions are needed to safeguard our nation’s wildlife from further decline,” said Congresswoman Ding-ell. “The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act represents a strong commitment to addressing the current biodiver-sity crisis using innovative, state-based management that will safeguard our nation’s environmental heritage for current and future generations.”

Congressman Fortenberry added “Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA) is a smart upstream policy that promotes continuity of habitats and helps prevent the costly downstream emergency room procedures of the Endangered Species Act. Through proactive, collaborative, and voluntary partnerships with states, RAWA en-hances community recreational opportunity for birders, hikers, hunters, anglers and all who enjoy the beauty of nature. Our existing funding model can no longer keep up with the needs of the full array of fish and wildlife in this country,” said Executive Director Ron Regan. “This bill will allow all Americans to become investors in conserving our nation’s fish and wildlife heritage.”

These critical efforts are supported by the Alliance for America’s Fish & Wildlife, whose purpose is to create (Con’t on p.8)

a 21st-century funding model for critically needed conservation of our nation’s most precious natural resources, our fish and wildlife. This effort was built upon the strong partnership created by the Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America’s Diverse Fish & Wildlife Resources, consisting of members repre-senting the outdoor recreation, retail and manufac-turing sector, the energy and automotive industries, private landowners, educational institutions, con-servation organizations, sportsmen’s groups and state and federal fish and wildlife agencies.

Tips on Helping Wildlife

NASHVILLE --- Have you ever asked yourself, “What can I do to help wildlife in Tennessee?” The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has a few helpful sug-gestions.

1. Buy a fishing or hunting license (even if you don’t fish or hunt) – License dollars are the main source of revenue for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency that conserves and manages more than 1,400 spe-cies of wildlife in Tennessee. Es-pecially for those who don’t hunt or fish, there is now a “Friend of Wildlife” license package avail-able at GoOutdoorsTennessee.com that is a good investment in wildlife conservation. Your pur-chase will help continue wildlife conservation and development of recreational opportunities for future generations.

2. Let wildlife stay wild – Some animals might seem like they need help, but they don’t need rescuing. Babies of some species are left alone all day and

rely on camouflage for protection. If you do hap-pen upon a truly injured animal, there is a list of wildlife rehabilitators at TNwildlife.org.

3. Avoid feeding wildlife - Feeding wildlife can lead to serious problems. Human food is not healthy for wild animals and they do not need it to survive. Wild animals have specialized diets and can become malnourished or die if fed the wrong foods. Also, animals cannot distinguish

food from wrappers or foil and can get sick eating these items.

4. Don’t litter - Most people know litter is bad for the planet, but also bad for unsuspecting wildlife. Everyday items such as drink cans and plastic bottles can be deadly for animals, even dogs and cats. Animals of all kinds often mistake trash for food or shelter. Harm to animals can be avoided if litter is disposed properly.

5. Turn your yard into good habitat - Creating habitat in your home’s yard is beneficial to wildlife. Habitat is a combination of food, water, shelter, and space arranged to meet the needs of wildlife. Even a small yard can be landscaped to attract birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and small animals. Trees, shrubs, and other plants provide shelter and food for wildlife.

Operation Dry Water is held near Independence Day holiday to give BUI enforcement high visibility during the peak boating season.

Four of this year’s BUI arrests came in TWRA Re-gion IV (East Tennessee). Two arrests were made in Region I (West) and II and one in Region III (Cumberland Plateau). There were four citations issued for reckless operation in Region III.

In addition to the fatality, there were two injury ac-cidents, one each in Region II and III. There were three property damage incidents.
