We have the news at our fingertips, technology that keeps us connected and busy lifestyles to manage. With so much information at our disposal, it can also create a prime breeding ground for stress, anxiety and depression. The American Institute of Stress reveals that 77 percent of U.S. citizens regularly experience the physical effects of stress. We can reasonably expect an increase in that number as we navigate the current pandemic. In order to live long and prosper, it’s important to take care of your mental, physical and social health even through difficult periods. Our bodies take on the toll of increased stress in surprising ways that can affect all facets of life. Most commonly, the physical effects of stress reveal themselves through headaches, insomnia, muscle tension, fatigue and high blood pressure. In turn, these symptoms can affect your mood and behavior in a negative way, creating a stress cycle that can be difficult to break. Here are some ways of relieving stress and taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. Get Physical Among health professionals, exercise is one of the top recommendations for battling the effects of stress & anxiety. It may seem counterintuitive to get up and move when you least feel like doing so, but getting in some low-impact exercise like taking a walk can make a huge difference. Studies have shown that simple exercises can alleviate tension, elevate the mood and reduce fatigue. Physical activity produces endorphins, which are chemicals that react as natural painkillers. The release of endorphins via exercise helps improve sleeping ability too, giving you a better opportunity for a good night’s rest. Be Mindful Being mindful is to be present in the moment and accept things for what they are. It creates inner strength and the ability to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions.
