I have just returned from Elks Grand Lodge Convention, in Tampa, Florida. What a wonderful experi-ence to meet with 6627 fellow Elks from around the country. Every time you are in an elevator or in line for a bus, the conversation would be, “Where are you from?”. I met some of the Best People On Earth.

Fullerton 1993 was definitely represented, at the second business session. Our own PDDGER, Scott Stephens (now a CHEA Trustee) spoke in front of the crowd of thousands, against the first resolution. Then I went up and “seconded the motion”. Right after that, our own PDDGER, Jim Vecchio, second-ed another motion. I am working on getting a copy of the minutes of that session. A recap of the convention & resolutions was shared at our next Lodge meeting.

We all witnessed the swearing in of our new Grand Exalted Ruler & Officers. Lots of information was shared about the two $50,000 scholarship winners, the national Hoop Shoot Champions, Many won-derful Grant programs across the country and much more.

The last day of the convention I was able to go to Busch Gardens. Since it was a Wednesday and there was a threatening storm, there were no crowds. We went on 8 of the best rollercoasters in the country in 5 hours. I’m a rollercoaster junkie and had the best time. There was no line more than 3 minutes long.

Now it’s back to work at the lodge and we have many events in the works for the future.

Fraternally yours,

Dana Antolin Exalted Ruler

From Our Loyal Knight

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

The month of July was a blast! It has been so wonderful to see many Elk member friends step out from their homes and into lodge activities and charity fundraisers like the Fireworks stand. We look forward to seeing you all more frequently and encourage ev-eryone to follow the first rule of elks clubs…Tell All Your Friends About our Elks Club and how to join! Pocket-size information cards &

Membership applications are available in the lobby, and all are encouraged to carry a couple in your vehicle.

Our summer continues with the Heroes Ball (sold out), re-es-tablishment of Taco Tuesdays and hopefully more Saturday events and hours. California has so many fun day trips. A possible one is to visit Angels Flight Railway which is scheduled to reopen August 31st with $1 fares for a one-way ride (see angelsflight.org for more info) and then join us for dinner after your day trip. Also keep an eye for news on Labor Day.

I’m excited about ENF grant requests in development and the work in progress by our Community Impact Committee. Additionally, our lodge will celebrate our 50th Christmas Tree Lane in December! Watch for much more news in the coming months and opportunities to help and enjoy.

Fraternally Yours, Marie Nunez, Esteemed Leading Knight

From Our Leading KnightJustice, for many people, refers to fairness. It is one of the most im-portant moral values and is import-ant to almost everyone, however: it means different things to different groups. Us as Elks, it means to sup-port our constitution and by-laws of the order.

Every Elk needs to understand and adhere to them. Justice also requires our observance of our

obligation should be full and complete, this is the foundation of Elkdom. If anyone needs a copy of our Lodge’s bi-laws or our Order’s constitution, please let me know, I will make sure you receive a copy.

The heat of summer is here. I love this time of year; BBQs, riding my bike in a t-shirt and outside living. It is a great time to enjoy our beautiful patio and take in the lights of Fullerton. Hopefully, I will see you for fellowship on these beautiful summer evenings.

The phrase “Brotherly Love” comes from the Greek word Phila which means ‘love’ or ‘love of brothers’ in Greek philosophy. This king of brotherly affection sets apart the early Christian churches from other groups during their period of existence. It is their most notable characteristic as Christians.

Today, this should also be an eminent trait for all Christians because the God whom we are serving is the author of Love. The New Testament abounds with expressions and teachings of Brotherly Love.

This type of Love mentioned in the Bible means loving our brothers in Christ with selfless desires and humility. True Brotherly Love is not self-centered, rather, it is sacrificial. I’ll see you all up at our Lodge on the Hill!

With the Elks National Foundation (ENF), for every $1 you donate $2.52 is returned to Fullerton & California Elks Charitable works. That’s huge!

Additionally, your donations will get you listed on the big board in the Lodge dining room. The re-ally big one, near the dance floor (with hundreds of brass plaques) is for those who’ve donated $100 or more. Then check out the smaller board next to it. Those generous members have donat-ed over $1,000. One such donor is Judy Givens. She is pictured here, with acting Exalted Ruler, Marie Nunez and ENF Chairman, Dan Casey, PER, who is presenting her a pin for cumulative dona-tions totaling $2,000.

Please call me (714-322-5861) if you have any questions, including how to become a Fidelity Club Member and have any size donation de-

The Elks National Foundation (ENF) is now accepting appli-cations for the 2022 the “Most Valuable Student” and the Legacy Awards Scholarships. Applications for both schol-arships will be applied for online. This year applicants will be given their choice of five nearby lodges in our Orange Coast District to pick their affiliation. Our Lodge Judges will be able to see the objective scoring previously not re-vealed to judges. Objective scoring includes points for aca-demics, community services, honors and awards, financial need, extracurricular activities and employment. 24 hours after submitting our Lodge scores, we will be notified who will be advancing to the next level of judging.

“Most Valuable Student” ScholarshipThe “Most Valuable Student” Scholarship is open to any high school senior in our District who is a US citizen. They do not have to be related to an Elks member. Applications will be judged on scholarship, leadership, community in-volvement, and financial need. Selection begins at the lo-cal level and progresses through district, state and national competition. 500 scholarships will be awarded in late April 2022 with many of them $4000 awards ($1000 per year). Interested students may apply at enf.elks.org/mvs. The Online application deadline is November 15, 2021. Our scholarship judges will have between December 3rd and the 20th to evaluate submissions.

“Legacy Awards” ScholarshipsThe “Legacy Awards” are awarded to college bound high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of Elks members. 300 scholarships of $4000 will be awarded in 2022. This is a statewide competition. Applications will be judged on the values of knowledge, charity, community

service and integrity. The Online application deadline is February 7, 2022. The judging committee will be appoint-ed by the Elks National Foundation Board of Trustees. Interested students may apply at enf.elks.org/leg.

Please pass on this information to your family and friends or contact me for more information, Trudy Nuzum, Fuller-ton Elks Lodge Scholarship Chair at 949-559-4387 (Home)

The time has come for our Bingo Committee to speak about what we are doing, and, to speak to the state of our ongoing needs.

Pete Murrieta and I set out to restart Bingo for our Lodge, and set in motion what we hoped would be an ongoing fundraiser that we could showcase to our members and to the public.

We set out on this path in June of 2018 with the hopes to be up and run-ning by the end of that year, but situations arose and we were not open until April 1, 2019; we ran through March 14, 2020. We had our ups and downs, but we were able to pay back the $10,000 we borrowed from the Lodge, then COVID shut us down (as it did to many other businesses and organizations) until May of 2021. In early May, I made a decision to reopen Bingo because of the constant calls from players wanting to know when they would be welcomed back. This decision was not overwhelm-ingly received, but, we did open up, and, with a shaky start in May, we are still getting stronger all the time.

The reason I am writing this article is to point out that it takes a corps of volunteers to make our Bingo a success. I am proud to say that a handful of volunteers have stepped forward and thanks to their dedication to making Bingo a success, we are now starting to see some positives in our operation. When you see Tom Ford, Jim Germinaro, Dee Germinaro, Violet Germinaro Pete Murrieta, Joe Petri, Judy Haraka and others that will not all fit in this newsletter, THANK THEM for their undying devotion to our Charity projects.

VOLUNTEERS are what make any function a success. When we were operating in 2019-2020 we had close to 100 volunteers willing to work once every 5 weeks, but now, when we need 13 to 15 volunteers to make everything run smoothly, we are only getting 4 or 5 to show up (besides the volunteers mentioned above).

As in any organization such as ours, volunteers are the lifeblood of any endeavor.

Please look to volunteer because as we burn out the people who are showing up weekly we will be forced to make a choice between keeping Bingo open or not being able to open for lack of help!!!

THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO

An event like this does not happen without dedicated Volunteers. We had a great group doing the following: Check-In Desk, Buffet Line Servers, Dad Gift Distribution, Kitchen Prep & Cooking, Refreshment Replenishers, Table Service, Waffle Station, And just generally everything

Here’s a hearty thanks to all the Volunteers, whom I give my hearti-est respect, admiration and gratitude (in alphabetical order): Dave Al-len, Ellie Castillo, Lucy Cheney, Deann Scott Compton, Robert Cooke, Dede Germinaro, Jim Germinaro, Judy Givens, Mike Gutierrez, Joann Haugen, Irene Imhof Marciano, Andy Konieczny, Dave Lawhorn,

Pauline Ling, Steve Mangum, Steve Marciano, Brian McNamara, Diana Mondragon, Pete Murrieta, Marie Nunez, Trudy Nuzum, Mary Schmidtgal, Candy Valko, Colleen Wadsworth, Pam Yrungaray Also have to give a mention, to the Lodge employees: Francisco, working tirelessly as kitchen backup, Heidi Irby, who served all the Dad drink specials with a smile, and finally, our new Chef Z, who counseled with the organizing committee beforehand with valuable advice, and who created some incredible customized Fathers Day fruit presentations (trust me, you had to be there).

So, as I’ve mentioned before, I joined the Fullerton Elks in 2004. I had always wondered why we didn’t do a Fathers Day event to complement the Mothers Day Celebration. Thanks to all you have helped make this a successful annual event.
