Interim Town Manager

Ms. Laura Allen participated in her first Berwyn Heights Town Meeting on August 12, 2020. Unfortunately, it had to be conducted virtually, and it may be a while before we can all meet her in person. She has worked over 30 years in the public sector, and has already begun to use that background in negotiations and discussions with WSSC (regarding the water main break on Pontiac Street), the State Highway Administration (regarding litter on Kenilworth Avenue/Highway 201) and Prince George’s County (regarding an old stormwater drainage system on Seminole Street). She is also sharing her experience with projects Town groups are considering: increasing community engagement and obtaining Bee City certification. This help is much appreciated! "Learning Pods" Survey The Berwyn Heights Education Advisory Committee is assessing interest in the development of "Learning Pods" within the community. A "Learning Pod" is an in-person learning group, created and organized by parents. It is intended to support virtual schooling for children from multiple families, and would be led by either parents and/or tutors. The survey is open to everyone, with a focus on those who are caring for school age children: parents, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, foster parents, etc. However, the survey is structured so that even if you don't have children, or don't want to participate in a "pod", you can still provide feedback. Property Tax Credits All Maryland Homeowners are eligible for the Homestead Tax Credit on their primary residence. You only need to apply for the Homestead Tax Credit one time. If you are not sure if you are receiving the Homestead Tax Credit, be sure to check by looking up your property on the Real Property Data Search website. The State of Maryland also provides relief for eligible homeowners by setting a limit on the amount of property taxes owed based on their net worth and income. Residents must apply annually for the Homeowner’s Property Tax Credit; the deadline this year is October 1, 2020. Berwyn Heights resident homeowners who have applied and received the State of Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit are also eligible to receive up to a 10% credit on their Town real property tax bill. Residents must apply annually for the Homeowners Tax Credit Program by completing the application form; the deadline is December 1, 2020. School Schedules

Prince George’s County has announced that all classes will be held virtually 5 days a week. Parents who have not yet registered their students should start the online process as soon as possible. Students' class schedules will be available on SchoolMax, the system's e-learning platform, on Aug. 21. Students who still have their Chromebook from the spring should continue using it. All other students can pick up their laptop the week of Aug. 24. Instructional packets and school supplies will also be available for pickup on those days. Classes begin on Aug. 31. Distance learning will continue until at least Jan. 29, 2021, which marks the end of the first semester. The University of Maryland will begin the semester as scheduled on August 31 but will delay undergraduate in-person instruction until September 14. Undergraduate instruction will be delivered online for the first two weeks. All graduate-level instruction and approved research activities will proceed as planned. Absentee Ballots All registered voters (including out-of-state students, those overseas or in the military) have the option and are encouraged to vote by absentee ballot in the November 3rd elections. The deadline to register to vote for the 2020 Presidential General Election is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. La Sra. Laura Allen participó en su primera reunión de Berwyn Heights el 12 de agosto de 2020. Encuesta "Learning Pods" El Comité Asesor de Educación de Berwyn Heights está evaluando el interés en el desarrollo de "Learning Pods" dentro de la comunidad.
