The Key

(21

st

Ordinary Sunday: Isaiah 22:1923; Romans 11:33

36; Matthew 16:1320)

As usual, there is a clear connection between the first

reading and the Gospel. It lies in the symbolism of keys.

Eliakim will be given Shebna’s keys; Jesus entrusts the

keys to the kingdom of heaven to Peter.

At first glance this might appear to be a prize which Peter

won by coming up with the correct answer to the

question, “Who do you say that I am?” Nothing could be

farther from the truth. It is the Father who has revealed

this to him.

As the same question is raised from generation to

generation, we need to answer it also for ourselves.

Peter’s response is not selfevident. What is one to do in

circumstances where one feels surrounded by people

who make a mockery of our religion? Perhaps this is part

of what St. Paul calls God’s “inscrutable judgments and

unsearchable ways.” But what is the key to maintaining

our peace of soul?

At La Salette, Our Lady spoke about just such a situation.

The faithful few were becoming fewer and fewer, in an

aggressively anticlerical world. The key Mary offered is

the one she wore around her neck: the image of her

crucified Son.

She emphasized the importance of our relationship to

Jesus, and to the cross on which he died for us. Far from

reviling his name, we are called to proclaim in word and

action, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

That means living as faithful and, yes, happy disciples.

Jesus said to Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I

will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld

shall not prevail against it.” While a fortress mentality is

not necessarily to be encouraged, this promise is a

source of comfort.

There is another encouragement in today’s Psalm: “The

Lord is exalted, yet the lowly he sees.” As with Maximin

and his father on their way home from the field of Coin,

his watchful eye is upon us.

With Mary we can pray without ceasing. We can make

ours the words of the psalm response: “Lord, your love is

eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.” Even if

nothing changes, we can be what Isaiah calls “a peg in a

sure spot,” unshaken in our faith.

Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston Prayer

in the Time of the Coronavirus

Comfort us, O Lord, for we are like

your disciples on the storm tossed seas,

unsettled by what lies ahead.

We turn to You, our Healer and Guide,

to still our hearts in our time of need and

hear our prayer: Heal those who are sick

with the coronavirus and protect the elderly

and most vulnerable. Give strength to all who

tend to our health and wisdom to researchers

who work toward a cure. Open our eyes

and hearts, as you did during Hurricane Harvey,

that we may look beyond our immediate needs to care

for others who need help.

Through the Holy Spirit, guide our leaders to make wise

decisions for the welfare of all the people

they serve. Grant eternal rest to those who

have died from the virus. May Mary,

Our Mother, who has heard our pleas in

the storms of our lives, intercede to her Son,

that we may find healing and a prompt end to this illness.

Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us.

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God

to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin

betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of

David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to

her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

But she was greatly troubled at what was said and

pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the

angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have

found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your

womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,

and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his

father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,

and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said

to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations

with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The

holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the

Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to

be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold,

Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her

old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was

called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May

it be done to me according to your word.” Then the

angel departed from her.

The Feast of Mary Queen will be celebrated at all

Masses this weekend, August 22nd & 23rd.

Pray for Our Nation

Difficult times call God’s faithful to

more frequent and diligent prayer. In

these days of protests, riots,

pandemics, and social unrest we will

gather to pray the Rosary and Divine

Mercy Chaplet monthly to invoke His

Holy Will for ourselves and our families, our loved ones,

our government, our medicine, our laws, and our Church.

May God in His Mercy protect us and keep us faithful to

the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Please join us after 5:30

PM Mass in the St. Joseph Chapel on the first Saturday of

the month. For more information, please contact Deacon

Paul Robison at 7134161585.

Men’s Ministry Challenge to Honor Father Moe

As you know, Mary Queen has established a Memorial

Fund to honor Father Moe Linehan’s life. Gifts to this fund

are used for a technology ministry to reach out to people

in our own parish and beyond, by livestreaming Masses,

Holy Hours or other opportunities of prayer to help us

focus on what is central in our faith and formation. All

gifts received to this Memorial Fund in August and

September will be matched dollar for dollar (up to

$15,000) by the Men’s Ministry. Please take advantage

of this opportunity to double the impact of your donations.

We invite you to make a gift to the Father Moe Memorial

Fund which will honor his legacy, as well as share in our

important Mary Queen Ministry of evangelization and

pastoral outreach through today’s technology.

Rite of Baptism

Mary Queen will now be offering Baptism Preparation

classes online. For more information on how to sign up for

a class or information on having your child baptized,

please contact Anita Shorosky at 2814821391 ext. 310

or [email protected].

Weekend Mass Worship Aids

In an effort to help minimize exposure, we shall refrain

from using the hymnals, until further notice. Please visit

Mary Queen’s website, app or Facebook page to

download the worship aid for each Mass. You will be able

to utilize your mobile device, computer or tablet to sing

praise and thanksgiving during Mass. This will be

especially beneficial for those who are participating via the

streamed Mass.

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed

The Food Pantry is in need of volunteers on a substitute

basis. The Pantry changed procedures in midMarch, to

ensure the safety of volunteers and clients. The

scheduled pantry volunteers are down to the bare

minimum and when one is not available on a given day, it

causes a hardship for the entire group. Substitute

volunteers are needed to help during these times, to keep

everything running smoothly. All volunteers are required

to wear a mask and social distance while working in the

pantry. If you are interested in volunteering in the pantry

as a substitute, please contact Chris Austgen at 281482

Spiritual Act of Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to

receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into

my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be

separated from You. Amen.

st

Sunday in Ordinary Time

The only way to know God is to love God. Our minds will

never fully grasp the mystery of God, but our hearts and

souls can learn to love the mystery. Years ago, when life

had a more innocent quality to it, we believed what we

were told or witnessed, unless there was direct evidence

otherwise. This was especially true if the information came

from someone in authority. In a sense, we were a bit more

gullible on one hand but also more trusting on the other.

The latter is an admirable quality that sadly can be eroded

when we realize we have been duped. With education

and technological advances, we find ourselves more

skeptical and less likely to too quickly accept and believe

what we see and hear.

For all of the good that social media can do, it can also

easily distort reality and truth. Photoshop and a myriad

other technological truths can add to, fabricate, and make

even the nonexistent seem real. It is amazing. How far do

we allow this obviously justifiable skepticism to take us?

Questioning and doubting are healthy elements of any

good relationship as long as we don’t allow them to turn

us away from a deeper experience of love and encounter.

If we cannot get our minds around something or

empirically justify or prove it, we tend to declare it a hoax,

untrue, or unauthentic and walk away. The very same

trust that can quickly be eroded is exactly what is

essential for all of our relationships, especially our

relationship with God. With all things and people that

make a profound claim on us, we have to trust in the

absence of knowledge. Full selfinvestment involves

plunging completely into the unknown!

Simon Peter said to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of

the Living God.” Peter came to this knowledge, which is

not “head knowledge” because of the relationship he

shared with Jesus and what God was able to reveal in and

through that relationship. Peter simply “knew” because of

love that this is who Jesus really is. The silent exchange

of love between friends, and not an intellectual exercise of

the mind, brought Peter to this place. When we stop and

think about it, there are many things in life that we simply

know but do not completely understand. When someone

sacrifices their own wellbeing for another, it may not

make intellectual sense when examined. But it makes a

world of sense when it is carried out. The vastness of

reality and an encounter with incomprehensible mystery

all lead us to profound silence where we simply know

something to be true. Have you trusted enough to allow

your relationship with God to bring you to this place or are

you still too skeptical? ©LPi

The Choice of Stewardship

What does it mean to be a good steward? Does it mean

to be an active parishioner, or something more? Are we

better stewards because we give more in terms of our

money and time to our parish, or are we called to do

even more than that?

The truth is that stewardship is a way of life. We are not

simply called to be active parishioners, but instead be

active disciples all the time. In fact, what we learn to do in

our parish should serve as preparation for the mission

field of the world. What have we really done if we only act

like disciples of Jesus Christ while we are assembled

with others who claim to be the same?

The choice before us is to give of ourselves in all aspects

of our day and life. The call of Jesus will come in our

everyday lives with our coworkers, family, and friends

more often than it will within our parish community. First,

if we can’t become good stewards when we are among

those who proclaim Jesus as Lord, how will we be able to

do so when we are with those who are nonbelievers?

Second, when our muscles of gratitude, generosity, and

graciousness are strengthened within our parish

community, we are more able to meet the challenges of

this world. However, we do not become good stewards

by accident. We must always choose to live this way.

What will you choose? Tracy Earl Welliver ©LPi
