Purchase CCSF Cards as Gifts

The Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF) raises funds to be used in the education of young men to the Priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. The primary fundraiser are the sale of prayer cards, which make great Christmas or birthday gifts. To purchase cards, Sts. Peter & Paul parishioners can contact Jackie Stewart and Immaculate Conception parishioners can contact Cecilia Vasicek.

Have you been thinking about exploring the Catholic faith? Would you like to learn more about what Catholics believe and how we worship? Whether you are deeply interested or merely curious, we invite you to join us to explore the Sunday scriptures, answer questions, and discuss basic Christian beliefs from a Catholic perspective. Meetings are very informal and everyone is

welcome. For more information, please call the rectory office (979-865-2368) or contact Deacon Gerald DuPont.

Make Your Weekly Donation Online

Immaculate Conception Church and Sts. Peter & Paul Church now accept online donations. With many parishioners who are still uncomfortable or unable to attend mass due to age or medical issues, we encourage you to use our online giving. It is a very easy process. Just go to the Sts. Peter & Paul website, https://stsppbellvilletx.org/ and click on the tab labeled “On-line Giving (Industry)” or “On-line Giving (Bellville)”and follow the prompts.

Donations for Seafarers

Seafarers coming into the Port of Houston need our help!

We ask you to bring one or more of the items below with you to church and put them in the box provided in the back of church. The items needed include: combs, bath soaps, disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, pencils, pens, small writing pads, puzzles, envelopes, deodorants, needle & thread, white tube socks, brown cotton gloves, knit caps, aspirins, handkerchiefs, Band-Aids, key chains, small photo albums, Texas souvenirs, disposable or single use cameras, books, plastic shoe boxes, shaving cream (no aerosol cans).

This year we would like to get plastic shoe boxes for the seafarers. They are easier to store and the seafarers can use them to keep their stuff in. Our goal is to

collect 200 boxes. The last day for donations is Sunday, September 13. The boxes will be wrapped at the Bluebonnet Deanery Meeting in Bellville at 9:30 am, Tuesday, September 15.

The Divine Point of View

Divinely wise souls often infuriate the worldly-wise because

they always see things from the Divine point of view. The

worldly are willing to let anyone believe in God if he pleases,

but only on condition that a belief in God will mean no more

than belief in anything else. They will allow God, provided that

God does not matter. But taking God seriously is precisely

what makes the saint. As St. Teresa put it, “What is not God to

me is nothing.” This passion is called snobbish, intolerant,

stupid, and unwarranted intrusion; yet those who resent it

deeply wish in their own hearts that they had the saint’s inner

peace and happiness. – Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

Sts. Peter & Paul CCE Registration Update

We have made a few changes in registration for CCE this year, which will make it easier on both parents and staff. (We have gone paperless!) Please go to the Sts. Peter & Paul website, and click on the Formation tab. To the right you will see where it says “CCE registration” (English and Spanish). It will only take you a few minutes. At the end of the On line registration, you will see a button that will take you to our online payment. Once this is complete, your child/children are registered. All registrations must be completed by August 28th, in order to ensure a place in the classroom, or to have the materials that you will need, if you choose the at home program. (Financial assistance is available upon request).

If you have any problems registering or need any help, please email Kimberly Harrelson at [email protected]

Patience is the companion of wisdom. - St. Augustine

The Rock

Peter was Jesus’ choice to lead the fragile band of apostles. In today’s Gospel, Simon is given a new name—Peter, the “rock.” In John’s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shepherd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep. And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we think about the durable rocklike quality that Jesus needed in a leader.

Peter was appointed to his leadership position for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mistake his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through. They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. They make Peter a sympathetic and lovable person. They provide us with the balance and humor that we need as we consider our own roles in the universal church.

Divine Selection of Leaders

The historical memory of the investiture of Eliakim preserved the oracle of Isaiah, today’s first reading, sheds light on the commissions of Peter in today’s Gospel. By divine decree, Eliakim son of Hilkiah replaces Shebna as master of the palace, a promotion that makes him prominent in the royal house. His great authority is symbolized by the key of the House of David; this means that Eliakim will determine who gains admission to the palace and who does not. Similarly, the authority conferred on Simon son of Jonah means he will function as master of the palace in the kingdom established by Jesus.

Jesus’ words to Peter make it clear that this appointment too is by divine decree. “Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” It is not Peter’s resume, but his response in faith to divine revelation that signals God’s choice of him. Jesus announces God’s initiative with a beatitude. And Paul seems to respond with a doxology: “How inscrutable are [God’s] judgments and how unsearchable his ways!”

When I die, God will not measure my head to see

how clever I was. God will measure my heart to see

how loving I was. - Anonymous
