Recycle your eclipse glasses! Now that the eclipse has come and gone, we all have a great opportunity to recycle our glasses so that others can view future eclipses. Xanterra is collecting glasses to donate to Astronomers Without Borders who will in turn send the glasses off to developing countries so that people will be able to view the 2019 eclipse safely. BIOLOGISTS SET TO BEGIN BEAR TRAPPING FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. PUBLIC REMINDED TO HEED WARNING SIGNS! BOZEMAN – As part of ongoing efforts required under the 2016 Yellowstone Grizzly Bear Conservation Strategy to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the USGS and Yellowstone National Park would like to inform the public that biologists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) and Yellowstone National Park will be conducting scientific grizzly bear and black bear research operations in Yellowstone National Park from August 22 through October 31. Team members will bait and trap bears at several remote sites within Yellowstone National Park. Once trapped, the bears are anesthetized to allow wildlife biologists to radio-collar and collect scientific samples for study. All trapping and handling are done in accordance with strict protocols developed by the IGBST. None of the trap sites in the park will be located near any established hiking trails or backcountry campsites, and all trap sites will have posted warnings for the closure perimeter. Potential access points will also be post-ed with warning signs for the closure area. Backcountry users who come upon any of these posted areas need to heed the warnings and stay out of the area. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team was established in 1973 to collaboratively monitor and manage grizzly bears in the ecosystem on an interagency basis. The gathering of critical data on the bears is part of a long-term research effort and required under the 2016 Yellowstone Grizzly Bear Conservation Strategy to help wildlife managers devise and implement programs to support the ongoing conservation of Yellowstone’s grizzly bear population. The IGBST is composed of representatives of the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribal Fish and Game Department, and the states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. NATIVE FISH REINTRODUCTION PROJECT BEGINS ON YELLOWSTONE’S UPPER GIBBON RIVER Closures may affect backcountry travel MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Starting next week, park staff will take action to eliminate non-native rainbow trout, brook trout, and lake-dwelling grayling from the upper Gibbon River drainage. After the action is complete, biologists will reintroduce native fish species to the upper Gibbon River drainage. The upper Gibbon River drainage is in the central portion of Yellowstone National Park and includes Grebe, Wolf, and Ice lakes, as well as the connecting streams above Virginia Cascades (which is located approximate-ly 0.75 miles north of the Grand Loop Road between Norris Junction and Canyon Village). Beginning on Monday, August 21 and continuing through September 30, biologists will use rotenone, a pisci-cide (fish toxin) to remove fish in the upper Gibbon River drainage. Rotenone is a naturally occurring chemi-cal compound derived from the roots of certain tropical plants. Biologists will add potassium permanganate to water at the lower bounds of the upper Gibbon River drainage to fully detoxify rotenone and prevent impacts to downstream waters. Trails and campsites within the upper Gibbon River drainage will be closed to public access (see map for de-tails). The Ice Lake area will be closed from August 21 to September 30. The Grebe and Wolf lake area will be closed from September 5 to 30. This action is part of a three year project that will create a refuge for the reintroduction of native westslope cut-throat trout and fluvial (stream-dwelling) arctic grayling, which are the park’s native grayling strain. Genet-ically pure westslope cutthroat trout and fluvial arctic grayling were nearly eliminated from Yellowstone be-cause of the historical stocking of non-native fish. The park has restored these native fish to East Fork Speci-men Creek, Goose Lake, and Grayling Creek as outlined in our Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact documents about the Native Fish Conservation Plan. The work in the upper Gibbon River drainage is a continuation of this effort.

CUSTER GALLATIN FOREST PLAN REVISION Public Meetings and Webinars Coming in September The Custer Gallatin Forest Plan Revision team is setting out on the road again with the fourth round of public meet-ings September 6-20, 2017. Community conversa-tions will give the forest ser-vice input on the plan direc-tion developed to date. These public meetings are aimed at stepping down a notch from the overarching vision statements, or desired conditions, and getting into more tangible plan components such as standards, guidelines, objectives and goals that help achieve those overarching visions. Meeting agendas will in-clude an opening main presentation followed by small group discussions organized around key topics such as wildlife, recreation, designated areas and ecology.
