In today’s laboratory a majority of patient testing is done on plat-forms that perform discrete testing. Quality Control (QC) results are no longer associated with a batch of patient samples, but only reflect what is happening on the instrument at a point in time. Laboratories are also using instruments in different ways with many types of staff. The growth of decentralized testing has also created QC challenges for the laboratory. CLSI recently published EP-23, Laboratory Quality Control Based on Risk Management. This workshop will show you how to use risk management principles to develop a cost effective quality control program that addresses sources of error throughout the entire analytic process.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Describe statistical tools used in QC data interpretation.• Develop a validation plan when introducing new testing into

the laboratory.• Select QC rules and establish control limits.• Utilize risk management tools to design a cost effective QC

program.

Jump start your supervisory career! Enhance your laboratory man-agement skills! Today’s clinical laboratory is a highly complex and busy environment that requires skilled supervisors and managers who are well versed in the various aspects of management. But-- if you’ve spent your formative years immersed in science and medi-cine or you’ve recently taken on a management role-- you probably haven’t had opportunity or time to focus on all the management rules and tools that you need. This workshop will establish your pro-fessional development foundation, with essential information in the crucial management areas of finance, operations, human resources, and marketing/customer relations. Topics will include budgeting, leadership, regulatory issues, staff concerns, and resources for further career enhancement.

Following this workshop, you will be able to: • Discuss key elements in laboratory finances and perform test-

cost and break-even analyses.• Achieve quality laboratory services, using information, facility,

risk, and safety management practices.• Describe the four components in laboratory marketing.• Apply appropriate skills in managing staff, including recruiting,

maintaining, and professional development.

Meet the daily challenges in microbiology: specimen handling, test selection, and specimen workup decisions are based on many scraps of clinical and laboratory information that, when considered alone, may be of little diagnostic value. Clinical microbiologists, more so than other laboratorians, must function like detectives, gathering the evidence necessary for a correct etiologic diagnosis.

Enhance your microbiology knowledge and sharpen your diagnos-tic abilities, as you resolve the infectious disease cases presented. Your interaction reinforces the information presented as unknown bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral etiologies are assessed. Following the case studies, hear a thorough discussion on the infectious agents involved. Incorporating both clinical and laboratory standpoints, the workshop emphasizes accurate, cost-effective laboratory workup procedures.

Following this workshop, you will be able to• Recognize the clinical syndromes associated with common

presentations of bacteremia, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted and other infectious diseases.

• Cite the laboratory methods and procedures that are most appropriate for the accurate identification of the pathogens, stressing cost-effective approaches.

When it’s up to you to perform body fluids analysis, are you com-fortable with the various techniques? Would you like to gain new confidence in your ability to identify cellular and other elements? This workshop will provide valuable guidance for updating and enhancing your skills in this important area of the laboratory.

You’ll expand your knowledge base with an overview of the normal anatomy and physiology of the various body fluids, including cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, serous and synovial fluids. Normal laboratory findings will be analyzed for each body fluid, followed by a discussion on significant cellular findings on wet preparations and Wright-stained smears in correlation to the related disease state. Case histories will be presented to reinforce the information shared.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Assess body fluids pre-analytically in preparation for testing.• Recognize normal and abnormal cell lineage in body fluids.• Describe the differential diagnosis of body fluids.

A phlebotomist is a crucial participant in patient care, setting the standard for result quality and patient satisfaction. There is an art to being a good phlebotomist—an art based on multifaceted knowl-edge and skills. Whether you practice or teach phlebotomy, this workshop will provide the current, practical information you need to combine phlebotomy art and skill into the highest quality patient care. Topics will include the latest guidelines and regulations from NACCLS, CLSI, and OSHA, which will highlight the need for constant awareness of patient and personal safety; safety devices; blood-borne pathogens; and appropriate, confidence-building customer service and communication techniques for your interactions with patients and healthcare colleagues. Critically important topics, such as preanalytical preparation and pitfalls, age-specific venipuncture procedures, and handling adverse reactions to venipuncture, will be presented, along with legal and risk management issues, new equipment, and the phlebotomist’s increasing responsibilities in point-of-care testing.

Following this workshop, you will be able to• Describe and apply the CLSI guidelines to venipuncture

collection.• Explain the measures and actions necessary to ensure safe

practices in phlebotomy, including the newest safety devices.• Identify and resolve preanalytical problems before

venipuncture.• Utilize customer service and communication techniques for

improved patient and staff interaction.• Manage patient situations and age-specific venipunctures with

assurance.

Whatever your level in the laboratory, this workshop will sharpen your hematology and coagulation skills and improve your perfor-mance in those important and complex laboratory areas through a focus on abnormal cellular findings and automated results! You will review pertinent topics and participate in discussions based on your experiences in hematology, coagulation and special hematol-ogy. High quality images highlighting the relevant morphological aspects of each disorder discussed and particular emphasis on the ever-changing and dynamic subject of coagulation will ensure your knowledge of the results that you should be reporting daily, as well as those uncommon, yet extremely critical, cases that should never be missed.

Following this workshop, you will be able to• Identify the coagulation pathways, normal processes, disease

states, inhibitors, and anticoagulants, with regards to clinical symptoms and testing.

• Discuss the preanalytic and post analytical variables related to coagulation and hematology.

• Differentiate the anemias according to morphology, laboratory data, clinical symptoms, and outcomes.

• Describe white cell qualitative disorders, acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and myelodysplastic syndromes, with regards to CD markers, symptoms, and bone marrow and peripheral blood findings.
