IN THE SPOTLIGHTIn August, Bradley Wilson, Associate Professor of Mass Communication, had an article published in the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, “JEMS Revisits Subjects of Article About EMS on College Campuses.” Based on an article on college EMS services that he wrote for the magazine 20 years ago, the article looked at how working in college EMS had an impact on the careers of college students across the nation. The article is available online at http://bit.ly/2wEcg11.
Roberto Fuertes-Manjón, Professor of Spanish, recently presented the paper, “La valoración de las minorías en el discurso jesuítico colonial brasileño: De José de Anchieta al padre Vieira,” at the Latin American Studies Association meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay.
This summer, Steve Hilton, Associate Professor of Art, had artwork exhibited and collected in New York, France, Italy, and Spain, and participated in a symposium with five international artists in Šenčur, Slovenia. The work from the symposium will be exhibited in the Šenčur Ceramic Art Museum this fall. Hilton is also currently exhibiting work with two of his ceramic students, Jonna Shores and Michelle Castro, in Pasadena, Texas, at San Jacinto College.
Jim Sernoe, Chair of Mass Communication, received the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Small Programs Interest Group Dalton-Landon Foundation Award for Service at the 100th annual AEJMC conference in Chicago on August 11. This award is not awarded on a regular schedule but only when a worthy recipient is identified. It recognizes SPIG members who have provided exemplary service to the organization. At the same conference Sernoe was also an invited panel member for the session “Mixed Messages: Strategies for Teaching Classes Geared
Page 4
Toward Both Journalism and PR Students.” Additionally, Sernoe was one of 39 faculty selected nationally to attend the annual International Radio-TV Society faculty seminar. The event was in New York City in late July and featured meetings and workshops by industry leaders including NBC Anchor Lester Holt and producers at CNN and ABC.
Mitzi Lewis, Associate Professor of Mass Communication, coordinated and presented at a peer-reviewed research panel, “The Challenges of Writing 101: A Pedagogical Research Panel,” at the 100th annual AEJMC conference in Chicago. The research was supported by an MSU Intramural Research and Creative Endeavors Award and by EURECA and was conducted in partnership with MSU student Robin Reid (mass communication major) and New York Institute of Technology professor John Hanc.
Dittika Gupta and Suzanne Lindt of the West College of Education in collaboration with their colleague at Appalachian State University, Diana Moss, published an article “Chewing Your Way to Understanding” in Ohio Journal of School Mathematics (Vol 76, Issue 2). This paper explains how fourth- and fifth-grade students were presented with a real-world mathematical task that was engaging, hands-on, and promoted reasoning and problem solving. The authors share details of the activity and student struggles, reasoning, and understanding resulting from mathematical problem solving from the activity.
Dittika Gupta also published an article titled “Hooking Students to Functions: Giving Fun Context to Mathematical Vocabulary” in the journal Texas Math Teacher Spring/Summer 2017 issue. The article is about using the class “Seven Up” game to teach function vocabulary in a fun contextual way to students.
Yvonne Franke, Assistant Professor of German, recently presented the workshop titled “German Phantasies and the New World” at the 2017 Annual Conference of the German-Texan Heritage Society celebrated in Austin, Texas.
Claudia Montoya, Associate Professor of Spanish, presented the paper titled “Catalina D’Erzell, una reflexión socio-feminista a través del teatro en el México de 1925” at the XXV Jornadas Literarias de Teatro celebrated in Puebla, Mexico on June 8-10.
Soon-Mi Choi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Athletic Training & Exercise Physiology, is a corresponding author, and Parshwa Mehta, graduate student of Exercise Physiology program, is a first author on a recent scientific publication, “The Role of Exercise
Physiology in Dance.” The article is in Research in Dance and Physical Education, 2017 June,1(1), 29-35.
AJ Lopez III, Social Media Coordinator, was cited in the July 2017 BriefCASE issue for his tactics to boost summer social media orientation coverage. Information can be found here.
During their break while teaching Public Health in the London Study Abroad Program, Marty Gibson, RN, PhD, MCHES, and Betty Bowles, RNC, PhD, presented a research paper titled “Motivation to Ride in the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred Bicycling Event” at the 13th Annual International Conference on Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences sponsored by the Athens Institute for Education and Research, in Athens, Greece on July 24. This paper was co-authored by Karen Polvado, Lauren Jansen and Robin Lockhart, all faculty members of the Wilson School of Nursing.
Custodians Debbie Villarreal and Jorge Jordan were presented with the Star Award in late summer. From Villarreal’s nomination: “Debbie has been with MSU since January 2009; she has always done a great job. Debbie not only goes above and beyond in her daily duties, but she has helped Housing with all the linens that had to be washed this summer. If it had not been for her hard work and positive outlook on teamwork, the bedding might still not all be washed. She puts the ‘T’ into Teamwork. We all appreciate Debbie very much for everything she does.”
Jordan’s nomination read, “Jorge started working for MSU at the beginning of this year. Jorge may not be known by many due to the shift he works, but he does so much for the Wellness Center. There are always compliments on Jorge’s work and punctuality. He takes pride in his work and it shows. Anything that is asked of him, he does with no problems and with a smile. He is very cordial to his co-workers and the other employees at the Wellness Center. The Wellness Center, as well as MSU, is very glad to have someone like him working for them.”
The award recognizes Facilities Services employees who take pride in their work and give outstanding service to campus. Villarreal and Jordan were recognized with a certificate posted in their work space as well as a unique copper mustang cutout that may be displayed on desks and/or in the Daniel Building front office.
