¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL 2--Acelerado!Con la Señora Bernal

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The primary goal of our Spanish class is to develop the skills necessary to be able to communicate in meaningful and appropriate ways with other Spanish speakers. Our focus this year will be to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing while learning more about the Spanish-speaking culture. It is my hope that you will enjoy our journey as we work together to reach these goals.

CLASS RULES1. Respect people. 2. Respect property. 3. Respect time. 4. Follow all school rules and procedures

GRADE DISTRIBUTION10% Homework 20% Projects 10% Final Exam20% Classwork 40% Exams

OVERVIEW OF GRADE DISCRIPTORSStudents will be given a rubric describing specific requirements for oral and written assessments. The following descriptors provide a general picture of what students should be able to do at each level.

A= Far-Above Standards Student can communicate in a manner that is well-organized, includes many details, a variety of transitions, varied vocabulary and no significant errors in structure.

ACADEMIC HONESTY CHEATING OF ANY KIND IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!! Cheating includes copying someone else’s work and turning it in as your own as well as letting someone else copy your work! All students involved in cheating will receive an automatic zero for the assignment and disciplinary action will be taken (detention, referral to the dean, contact parent, etc.). Do not let classmates “see” how to do the HW by giving them yours. Explain it to them instead; this avoids the natural tendency to copy it and both of you will learn in the process!

The Foreign Language Department recognizes that the use of translators, translating programs, and other technological devices can be beneficial in the study of a foreign language. However, using these devices to do your work for you constitutes CHEATING. We encourage you to use this technology as you would a dictionary. Violations of this policy will be handled in accordance with the school’s Academic Honesty Policy (p 6-8). If you have any questions regarding this policy please ask!

SUPPLIES recommended for a successful class Other Useful Supplies:1. A good attitude and willingness to work! 7. Highlighters or colored pens for important points on notes 2. One 3-ring 1” binder (turned in regularly for grading) 8. Correction tape 3. Lined paper 9. Colored pencils or markers for projects4. Pens (black or blue and a red pen for correcting work) 10. Scissors and glue stick for projects5. A Spanish/English dictionary 11. #2 pencils with good erasers for final exams6. A whiteboard marker--EXPO low odor (for class activities)

HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK and ABSENCES Homework will be given three or more times per week. It will always be stamped and corrected in class. Periodically, homework will be turned in and graded for accuracy—so correct carefully! Assignments must be complete to receive credit for them in the notebook checks. If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get the homework and classwork from srabernal.weebly.com or the “¿Qué hicimos?” folder. Make-up work is due the day after returning to school. Please turn in the make-up HW directly to the teacher and get your “crónica” stamped. If an exam was missed, please make arrangements to take it during lunch. Once tests are returned to the other students, make up tests will not be given; therefore, it should be made up within one week. In order to make the best use of class time, students will be asked to copy (not print) grammar notes from the

PowerPoints found on the SraBernal.weebly.com website. If a student has technical problems with this site, (s)he is required to send me an email or bring a note from his/her parent/guardian explaining the problem in order to be given more time to complete the assignment.

PROJECTSProjects will be assigned when appropriate. Because projects are assigned well in advance of their due dates, projects are due ON the assigned date whether the student is present or not! Late projects will automatically drop a letter grade for each day they are late. If you know you will be absent, you can email it to me, send it with someone else, put it in my box in the office, or let me know ahead of time so we can make arrangements.

NOTEBOOKIn an effort to help students become independent learners, they will need to keep and organize all notes, classwork, homework, assessments, etc. All entries will be numbered and a grade will be given two or three times per grading period based on completeness, organization and appearance. A 1” 3-ring binder to use ONLY for this class is HIGHLY recommended.

GETTING HELPI will be available in my room (BC-3) on Mondays and Wednesdays or as needed at lunch to help you with any questions you have or to help you with assignments. If you don’t understand the HW, you must see me BEFORE class starts so please plan ahead if you need help!!!

MY PHILOSOPHYFirst, I love to teach and my greatest joy is when a student is able to do something he or she wasn’t able to do before! In fact, that is my definition of “learning.” I want you to be able to understand, speak, read, and write Spanish and I want you to feel confident doing so. But in order to accomplish that, you must be willing to let me know when you don’t understand something so I can help you. Therefore, please, don’t be afraid to ask questions! There are no stupid questions if they are asked for the purpose of understanding something better. It is best to get instant feedback, but you can also come by at lunch or after school if you feel more comfortable. Finally, I believe we will have a great year if we respect each other and work together. You are a star in my life. I hope this year we can help each other shine stronger and brighter!

Your signature affirms that you have read and that you understand the class requirements and expectations. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me at 915-5841 x 30240 or better yet, e-mail me at [email protected] [email protected]. I look forward to working with you!

Throughout the year, you will be required to turn in a cuaderno (notebook) for a 50-point classwork grade. The objective of this notebook is to effectively organize all of your work so that it is easily accessible and useful in helping you to study for exams. In order to be most successful in this class, it is highly recommended that you keep all of your work organized in a 1” 3-ring binder that you use just for this class. In order to receive full credit, you must adhere to the following guidelines:

Labeling of pagesEVERY page in your notebook must be labeled with your first and last name, your class period and the date in the UPPER RIGHT-HAND corner. Each new entry will need its own date!

Page NumberEvery page (with the exception of your current homework stamp sheet and Handouts) must be labeled with a page number in the UPPER RIGHT HAND corner of the page, near your name.

EXAMPLE OF A PROPER PAGE LABELPg 6

Yenifer López Per. 3 el 3 de sept

Notes and ActivitiesIn order to save paper, notes and activities from different days are written on the same paper as previous notes or activities. Please DRAW A LINE & SKIP A LINE to separate one activity or set of notes from another and write the NEW DATE for the notes/activity. PLEASE HIGHLIGHT the dates and activity numbers for all notes and activities.

OrganizationPages in your notebook must be organized using the “Contenido” (Table of Contents) posted on the WEBSITE. The contenido will be posted a few days before the notebook is due. Pages must be placed in NUMBER ORDER, not in chronological (date) order as they are listed on the contenido. In other words, all apuntes (notes) will be on the same page and if you need more than one paper, it will still be labeled with the same page number. The same goes for the actividades .

Turning in the NotebookNotebooks will usually be turned in the day of the unit test. In order to receive full credit, your notebook must be in the pile by the end of the day it is due. You may turn it in at lunch or after school that day but YOU MAY NOT organize it during class! Any notebooks that are worked on in class or turned in after the day it is due will lose 5 points per day.

Grading of the NotebookEvery notebook you turn in will be worth 50 points, regardless of how many pages are in the notebook. I will divide the number of items you have in your notebook by the number of items listed on the contenido (table of contents) page. I will convert your score into a percentage that will be multiplied by 50.

Example:You have 35 of the 38 items required in your notebook

35/38 = 92.1%92.1% x 50 = 46.05 Notebook score = 46/50
