Nineteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time

August 9, 2009

“I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;

this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.”

—Jn 6:48-50

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on a Saturday this year — August 15th. Therefore, it is not a holy day of obligation. Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption as a dogma of the Church in 1950. Today the Virgin Mother of God was taken up into heaven to be the beginning and the pattern of the Church in its perfection.

Meditation for Sunday, August 9 Live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Ephesians 5:2 Even without a recession, selling a house can be difficult. I once heard that a realtor’s trick was to have the seller bake bread the morning of an open house so the first thing a potential buyer would experience was the fresh bread aroma of a homey kitchen. Before any word is spoken, the fragrance itself makes the buyer more interested. So, too, without an ounce of cologne, Jesus gave off a comforting warmth that welcomed people before he said a word, did a healing or made a miraculous multiplication of food and drink. Jesus had an “air” about him, even a fragrance, that made people feel at home with him. With Mother Teresa’s words, we can pray: Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere that I go. Dear Jesus, flood my soul with your spirit and your love. Fr. James Krings LIVING FAITH

Mission Coop Appeal Father Abelardo Gabriel and Brother Brian McLauchlin SVD of Divine Word Missionaries will be with us on Au-gust 15-16. They will speak about the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries. Father Gabriel is currently assigned at St. Anselm’s Church in Chicago, Illinois. The Divine Word Missionaries are an international reli-gious community of missionary priests and Brothers who serve in 70 countries. This mission appeal is part of the Mission Co-op Program of the Diocese. Please be generous in the second collec-tion to help support the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries. Their missionaries work in some of the most difficult areas of our world. There will not be an envelope in your boxed set for this collection.

From the Pastor If you have visited our cemetery recently, you might have noticed some improvements are being done. It won’t be too long and our present cemetery will be filled. The land north of the cemetery will open when needed.

In order to prepare for this expansion, we added what you might call small sidewalks. When someone is buried in the new section, the family can put their monu-ment right on the concrete sidewalk. This will insure the monuments from sinking or being crooked. I have seen this done at other cemeteries and it looks quite nice.

Also, this will reduce the excessive time needed for weed eating between headstones. We also did this in one part of the old cemetery, where some headstones were sinking quite badly.

This project has been okayed by the finance committee and the parish council. I believe you will like the improvements.

If you have any questions, you may talk to Ron Ruholl or myself. Thank you for your continued support.

May the Lord bless you and your family with good health and happiness. Peace, Love, Joy, Fr. Austin

ATTENTION MASS WALKERS—First meeting of the year will take place WEDNESDAY, 8/19, in the museum dining room at 8:00 am, beginning with coffee and sweets and socializing. HS Religious Ed Our high school religious ed classes will begin on Sept. 16. We are in need of one teacher for the year and also for team teachers who would like to step forward for the year. Team teachers are people who will work with the regular religion class teacher and provide extra support – whether it is putting your 2 cents in for what the Church teaches or how you live the faith or for help in “crowd control” in the classroom.

In the last 5 years, we have had several recent high school graduates who sat in the classrooms and helped in lots of ways plus several parents who wanted to actively be in-volved in the religious ed department but without the pressure of preparing weekly lesson plans.

If you aren’t sure you’d like to actually be in charge of a class for a year, this is a great way to get your feet wet & see if this might be your calling! Please call the high school religious ed office to inquire.

HAVE YOU MET GOD? Mark your calen-dars for Wednesday, September 2, from 6:30-9:00 pm for Discovering God in the Ordinary, a regional retreat experience. This presentation sponsored by RENEW In-ternational is for all parishioners from parishes involved in “WHY CATHOLIC?” Check the posters at the en-trances of church for more details. Registration is re-quired by August 20th. Please call the parish office to register. 857-6404 or 857-6404 ext. 227.

“WHY CATHOLIC?” season two is ap-proaching. Please consider joining a small group to dis-cuss THE CREED this year. Do you know the meaning behind what you are saying? Did you know that argu-ments were fought over the wording of each particular line in the Creed we say at Mass? This Fall’s session promises to enlighten and create a greater appreciation for the truths of our faith as outlined in our Sunday Creed. Sign-up Sunday is approaching. Think about it. Talk to your neighbors and friends. Commit to joining a small group this year.

As we continue all of our programs at the Family Life Center, you will be a part of all of them. —Family Life Center Board of Directors And thanks for the support of Catholic Charities through your generous donation during our Annual Collection. Your support enables our local office to maintain and ex-pand services to our sisters and brothers in need. Without your support, in the form of prayer, time and finances, Catholic Charities could not carry out its mission. May God continue to bless you for your generosity. Peace and all good! Gratefully, Sister Carol Beckerman, OSF, Staff, Board Members, Volunteers of Catholic Charities in Effingham

Holy Humor.. A Catholic guy goes into the confessional box. He notices on one wall a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest Cuban cigars. Then the priest comes in. “Father, forgive me, for it’s been a very long time since I’ve been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting these days.” The priest replies, “You’re on my side. Get out.”

Found: Ball glove & croc shoes. Both are in office.
