Q. DO I NEED HUNTER SAFETY OR BOWHUNTER SAFETY TO HUNT WITH ARCHERY EQUIPMENT?

A. Hunter safety or bowhunter safety is not required to hunt during the archery season or with archery equipment. Hunter safety is required to hunt by use of firearm for those born after 1965. Since archery equipment is not categorized as a firearm, hunter safety is not required if the only hunting method is with archery equipment.

MOST COMMON ARCHERY QUESTIONS Do I need an archery license in addition to my big game license? Yes—usually. Archers hunting in the archery preseason need an archery permit in most areas. The exception is for holders of Type 9 archery-only licenses. Hunters holding Type 9 licenses do not need a separate archery license. The archery license does not allow a person to take an extra animal—it simply allows the archer to hunt in the archery pre-season.· Do I need an archery license to hunt with a bow during the firearms season? No. The archery license is only required to hunt during the archery preseason.· Are mechanical broadheads legal? Yes, as long as the broadhead has a cutting width of at least one inch. Wyoming law requires that broadheads, whether mechanical or fixed, must have a minimum cutting width of one inch.· Can I carry a firearm while archery hunting during the archery preseason? Yes. However, the law prohibits the use of firearms in taking or finishing off any big or trophy game animals during the special archery season.· Are crossbows legal during the archery hunt? Yes, as long as they conform to certain specifications. Crossbows must have a minimum draw weight of 90 pounds and the bolt must be at least 16 inches long. The broadhead requirement is the same as with conventional archery equipment and must have a minimum cutting width of one inch.· Are lighted nocks and lighted sight pins legal? There is no regulation prohibiting the use of lighted nocks or sight pins.

1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon celery salt 1 tablespoon prepared mustard ground black pepper to taste 1/4 cup mayonnaise

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the macaroni, and cook until tender, about 8 minutes. Rinse under cold water and drain.In a large bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, mus-tard, salt and pepper. Stir in the onion, celery, green pepper, carrot, pimentos and macaroni. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serv-ing, but preferably overnight.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook

chop.Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil; cover, remove from heat, and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, eggs, celery, onion, relish, garlic salt, celery salt, mustard, pepper and mayonnaise. Mix to-gether well and refrigerate until chilled.

Bury My Heart Beyond the MountainAre you getting a little weary of being lectured to by the P. C. Liberals and their serial politi-cians about the injustices suffered by the American-Japanese at the Heart Mountain Reloca-tion Camp For sure, in hindsight, the American-Japanese were treated exceeding unjustly by that action. But it requires some context!

I, too, was there, in and about, just on the other side of the fence. Not once do I recall anyone locally ever even suggesting, doing, or conspiring to do those people in the camp any harm. Not once! (I can’t speak for Cody’s environs.)

Few people in Wyoming had anything to say or do about that policy, particularly locally. It all came out of the “left coast,” mostly California. It was instigated by the Federal government, its elected administration, and signed into law by President F. D. Roosevelt. He was not much criticized for it at the time for we were at war against some very formidable and dangerous adversaries. Unless you lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor, it may be difficult to understand the mood of the country then.

The internees were just placed within our midst by the Federal government, on what was then Federal land. Coming on the heels of the Great Depression, some locals were glad to get extra employment build-ing the barracks etc., but beyond that local involve-ment was minimal.

After the War, my brother and his family lived in the vacated barracks while he was a surveyor for the Bureau of Reclamation. They surveyed the various allotments to be divided up for the Veterans lucky enough to be successful at being chosen by lottery for one of the “homesteads.” My recollections of their household was that while not commodious, it was not that bad either. And they were young and healthy and hopeful for the future.

Same said of the “Veteran” Heart Mountain home-steaders who were allowed to purchase the barracks for very modest sums and move them to their home-stead allotments for living in or for outbuildings. So far as anybody knew they were glad to get them. Some lived in them for years, “as is,” with a little fixing up. Others eventually evolved into lovely homes, some of which are still being lived in to this day.

It’s also fair to say that overall, these barracks were often better than the tarpaper and frame housing occupied by the 1930’s Depression era Homestead-ers on the Powell Flats. (Those were the “good old days” —really!)

The worst injustice of the Heart Mountain affair was that the internees had their homes, businesses, and personal possessions and private property con-fiscated, or lost and absorbed so that many were left penniless and homeless with nowhere to go after the War. How about using your passion to pursue that

reality, P. C. Liberals?When I was in the military overseas in France, we

were quartered for a while in barracks consisting of tarpaper shacks (I mean shacks), recently vacated by the displaced Polish people from the War, who moved on to better housing. We had no central heat, no in-sulation, no indoor plumbing, but had wooden floors and bunks. Our only salvation, I suppose, was mild weather. We made the best of it, but those times are remembered, not for the lack of amenities, but for the good times generated, in part, by listening to and laughing at “Radio Russia” and their characterizations of us and our country, and ample supplies of Danish Tuborg beer made affordable on a GI’s pay by the PX system.

Always, always, I have thought of that experience as a picnic compared to the courage of the Doolittle raiders, the horrors of the Bataan Death March and camp, the deathly grind of Island hopping in the Pa-cific, the terror of the coastal invasions in France, the GI’s existing in foxholes to change their boots until their feet became so swollen they had to be cut-off (if they survived) and thousands of other hell-hole experiences.

Later came the bitterly frozen waste lands of Ko-rea and the Chosin reservoir (salute Darrel Urbanski and ten of thousands of his comrades), the steamy jungles of Vietnam, and now the scorching sandy wastelands of the Middle East. The list goes on and on, ad infinitum.

At least the P. C. Liberals could reserve a little em-pathy for these mostly drafted Veterans (rest assured being drafted or entering the military hardly begins and exercise in evolutionary democracy), particularly the Vietnam era boys, who also suffered through a na-tional disgrace that can never likely be properly ame-liorated. Where are their reparations and apologies?

So now, I have a final question for the P. C. Liber-als, etc.

How many internees at the Heart Mountain Relo-cation Camp were worked to death, starved to death (or both), executed by being hung or shot, or gassed and cremated, all without due process or trials? This sort of thing was happening frequently during that era all over the world. Perhaps you are privy to some his-tory the rest of us are unaware of or have overlooked.
