August 9, 2018 Zephyrhills hosts third annual Saturday Night Lights at Bulldog Stadium Fans in the stands chanted, “Let’s go, Dogs!” First- and sec- ond-string offenses and defenses squared off in goal-line stands and other game situations on Tom Fisher Field, aptly named for the former football coach. Blocks and tackles were made and touchdowns celebrated. What all of that and more was about last weekend at Bull- dog Stadium was a chance for local fans, parents and other sup- porters of the Zephyrhills High football team was to get a first- hand look at the 2018 version of the Bulldogs. With the season- opening game fast approaching — Aug. 24 against Sunshine Athletic Conference rival Wiregrass Ranch — the Bulldogs put on quite a show in the third annual Saturday Night Lights. The football team’s showcase for the community has be- come a tradition since the arrival of coach Nick Carroll, a former Zephyrhills football player entering his third season. “It was a great feeling, because the kids work very hard,” he said. “They want to show their work habits and show how hard they practice in front of the community.” Not long ago, a handful of 2018 Zephyrhills graduates, who sat together in the stands rooting for the Bulldogs, were part of the tradition. Among that group was Kameron Allen, a former linebacker and tight end who was glad to come out and show his support. “It makes you miss it, but at the same time you’ve got to move on with your life,” said Allen, who is headed to Florida State College in Ocala. Added Elijah Thomas, another former player who graduat- ed in May, “I remember the excitement, the atmosphere and all the support (of Saturday Night Lights).” Former players coming out to Bulldog Stadium in support of the team is nothing new in Zephyrhills. Like Teon Black, a 1998 graduate who counted Carroll as a former teammate. His reasoning for showing up last Saturday night was “just to see some action and support the ’Dogs; and to support my brother, coach Carroll.” Saturday night’s session, which began shortly after 6 p.m. and lasted for more than two hours, had a sparse crowd cheer- ing as the team filtered out of the locker room and onto the field for warmups. Then it was the players’ and coaches’ turns to get fired up as one-by-one the athletes squared off in a blocking drill called, Ring of Fire. The connection between energy and eat-ing is significant. A healthy diet and approach to eating can vastly improve energy levels, while a poorly planned diet that lacks nutrition can con-tribute to feelings of fatigue and increase a per-son’s risk for various ailments. The Harvard Medical School notes that dif-ferent kinds of foods are converted to energy at different rates. That’s why some foods, such as candy, provide quick boosts of energy while foods such as whole grains tend to supply the body with energy reserves that it can draw on throughout the day. It’s not just what people eat but how they eat that can affect their energy levels. In addition to choosing the right foods, men and women can try the following strategies as they look to eat to boost their energy levels. • Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Avoid-ing the traditional three-meals-per-day approach may help improve energy levels, especially for people who tend to eat sizable meals once, twice or even three times every day. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the metabolisms of people who do not eat regularly will slow down, as the body absorbs and stores more of the food it eats. Those stores include cholesterol and fat, which can be unhealthy and contribute to weight gain. However, by eating small meals more frequent-ly, one’s metabolism speeds up and more calo-ries are burned. The body recognizes more food is soon on the way and, as a result, it does not need to store as much cholesterol and fat as it would if meals were eaten less frequently. • Avoid a big lunch. The Harvard Med-ical School notes that, while the reasons are

unclear, research has indicated that the circadian rhythms of people who eat big lunches indicate a more significant drop in afternoon energy levels than the rhythms of people who eat smaller mid-day meals. Men and women who eat big lunches and find their energy levels waning later in the workday can try to eat smaller midday meals to boost their energy. • Be careful with caffeine. The foods people eat are not the only components of their diet that can affect their energy levels. Caffeinated bever-ages can provide a temporary boost of energy as well. However, men and women who drink cof-fee or other caffeinated beverages to boost their energy levels should avoid doing so in large amounts after 2 p.m. That’s because caffeine can cause insomnia, and insufficient sleep can dra-matically affect energy levels. • Choose the right snacks. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may compel some people to snack. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietet-ics notes that snacks are important as long as they’re the right snacks. Avoid snacks that are just empty calories in favor of foods that con-tain protein and fiber-rich carbohydrates. Such snacks, which may include fruits such as apples and fresh berries or protein sources like nuts and Greek yogurt, can provide lasting energy. It’s also important that men and women not snack to fill themselves up, but rather to quell any hunger pangs and get an energy boost between meals. The foods people eat and when they eat them can have a dramatic impact on their ener-gy levels.

NATURALLY EFFECTIVE!NO SIDE EFFECTS! NO DOWN TIME!NO ADDICTIVE PAIN MEDICINE! AND IT COSTS LESS THAN SURGERY!

ELIMINATE PAIN

Did you know…Stem cells are specialized cells found in every human being and play a key role in the body’s healing process. They have the ability to transform into any other type of cell in our body. They can become skin cells, tissue cells, muscle cells and so on, and are a proven alternative to surgery for joint replacement, sports injuries and orthopedic conditions. Stem cells have the ability to replicate substantially compared to our normal cells. As we age the number of stem cells in our body declines. WHAT IF WE COULD INJECT BRAND NEWSTEM CELLS INTO THE AREAS OF PAIN AND DEGENERATION? Imagine, the ability to heal and regenerate tissue would be signi cant.

“WE CAN! THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE IS HERE!”Stem cell therapy redirects large concentrations of stem cells to the damaged areas of our bodies, allowing the body to heal itself naturally like it did when we were younger.

home with her mother and has not stopped. She most defi -nitely wants to be a part of the high school squad when she becomes of age. “I want to be a part of the squad because I like it and it’s a good environment to be in.

I like practicing at home with my family and my mom helps me,” Hailey said. This up-and-coming color guard teammate will be in the seventh grade at Stewart Mid-dle School. Being part of a team like

the color guard gives the girls not only skills of movement and staying in tune with music but it has found a way to give them confi dence in themselves for other areas of their lives. Squad member Shania Spittka, who will be a junior, spoke about the loyalty among her teammates. “I like how we are a fam-ily beyond practice time and being at school,” she said. “It has given me a newfound con-fi dence in diff erent parts of my life.” Coach Staving, as well as the girls, are expecting a great year on the fi eld. Even though this is the smallest team that they can remember having they are tried-and-true with a steady sturdiness.

“I like the intensity and how hard you have to work to win,” said right tackle Jarrin Galeon, after going toe-to-toe in a draw against an op-posing lineman. Teammate A.J. Mathis, who played defen-sive end and off ensive tackle, relished the Ring of Fire just as much: “It shows who the weaker link is and what you have to work on.” Following the Ring of Fire drill, players went head-to-head in a more traditional exer-cise in which three defenders try to stop a ball-carrier behind a blocker. That one is labeled Oklahoma. There were plenty of parents in the stands watching the team practice, including Courtnie Hicks, whose son Jamar Hicks is a transfer from arch-rival Pasco.

“I think it’s a great idea so everybody can see what’s going on,” the mother said of Satur-day Night Lights. As for the scrimmage format, defender Car-trell Stong looked solid in the secondary while quarterbacks Dylan Wood and Doug Crawford hooked up on passes to receivers Ja’quan Shep-pard, Zyree Roundtee and Tyrese Wigfall. While acknowledging some solid plays on both sides of the ball, Carroll was quick to point out some inconsistencies during the open prac-tice session. “It was a learning experience,” he said, adding, “We’re not where we want to be.” Still, there is plenty of time for the Bulldogs to shore up their defi ciencies in time for the up-coming season.

For the fourth time in Rusty Guynn’s four years coaching baseball at Zephyr-hills High, ballplayers on the upcoming roster spent time honing their skills in a summer league. The Bulldogs recently played in a tournament at the former Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg, posting a 1-1-1 record in a three-game series.

Starter Caden Negron earned the win and reliever Austin Garrett got the save in an 8-0 shutout victory over FIBA. Pitchers Rielly Perez, Garrett and Trace Speegle spent time on the mound in a 3-3 tie with the Canes. Then, in a 4-3 loss to the Dragons, Zachary Driggers started and was followed by Austin Green and Garrett.

going to be just $29.99 per month. Membership levels that allow deeper levels of access will also be available but you don’t even have to be a member to use the facilities. Hear that Ep-person Ranch? There will even be scholarships available through the Sarah Grace Vande Berg Foundation. Police, fi refi ghters, veterans and teachers are also eligible for a discount, even below the $29.99. “Everyone is welcome,” bid winner and future operator of the tennis center Pascal Col-lard said. “This is going to be 100 percent, ev-eryone’s place, not just members.” Collard won what’s called the RFP or Re-quest For Proposal that the City of Zephyrhills put out in order to fi nd a qualifi ed person to op-erate the tennis center. They needed someone with world-class experience, someone that had deep ties to the local and international tennis community. They found that in Collard. “We wanted to do a public-private partner-ship and we knew the operator would have to have a wealth of experience,” Zephyrhills City Manager Steve Spina said. “Pascal fi t the bill.” Collard is a tremendous asset to the proj-ect. He has world class coaching experience, having coached some of the top male and fe-male players in the world. He has experience managing clubs. He ran a tennis organization in Europe called the Belgian Association for Tennis Development or BATD, that expanded into 33 clubs across the continent. In that time, three of the club’s male players went on to at-tain top 100 world (ATP) rankings, two female players went on to attain top 50 rankings. The organization had as many as 120 coaches and 8,000 students. Collard was also the Director of Prep Academy (juniors tennis) at Saddlebrook from 2003 to 2006. He then spent 10 years at the helm of the Merion Cricket Club (which is not a cricket club but a tennis club) in Philadelphia. Collard always had ties to the Zephyrhills com-munity. He took his club players from Europe to tournaments and workshops at Saddlebrook and he’s made more than 50 solo sky dives over

the years at Skydive City. Collard’s friend Dale Bohannon, who sold Collard his fi rst house in Florida, told him about the RFP for the pro-posed tennis center and Collard leapt at the op-portunity. “I fell in love with the project and the vi-sion behind it,” Collard said. “I met with city of-fi cials, architects, builders and realized we were putting together something unique.” The public-private partnership had great appeal to city offi cials. It was also part of how Collard saw the value of the project. The State of Florida also saw the appeal and off ered a $1 million grant. The USTA also liked the project and is helping with the design at no charge. Collard also brings some star power to the table. He has coaching experience and relation-ships with tennis legends such as John McEn-roe, Bjorn Borg, Martina Hingis, Chris Evert and Justine Henin. Those are faces and names that will inevitably grace the courts at the Sarah Grace Vande Berg Tennis Center when it’s com-pleted. Prior to the project’s completion, which is projected to be in the fall of 2019, Collard and the Sarah Grace Vande Berg Foundation are hosting a tennis clinic and gala. You know it’s going to be a big deal when the word, “gala” gets used. Collard was able to retain Nick Bol-lettieri and Billie Jean King for an Oct. 5 fund-raiser at Arbor Greene in Tampa. Bollettieri is a legendary tennis coach who has coached 10 male athletes that attained a number one world ranking, including Jim Cou-rier and Andre Agassi. King is just the fi fth woman in history to have won singles titles at all four Grand Slam events. Collard expects at least 200 players to be present at the event. From 5 to 8 p.m. is a clinic taught by Bollettieri. All proceeds go to the Sarah Grace Vande Berg Foundation. Collard is trying to make it even easier for members of the community to partici-pate. The website launches Oct. 1 and the fi rst 300 area residents to join the club will have their initiation fees waived.

Left: Collard built a renowned reputation working with tennis stars from all over the world, here pictured with Martina Hingis.
