A Message from the ChairBY: ROGER S. BRUBAKER, ABC KEYSTONE 2020 CHAIR OF THE BOARD

n case you missed it, much is happening at the Keystone Chapter, and we're just getting started!

There is a presidential election coming up on Tuesday, November 3, as well as many other important local and state races. If you happened to miss ABC Keystone's three PAC virtual fundraiser events in July, you have three more chances to participate in August. These virtual “Meet & Greet” events are designed to give members an opportunity to support candidates who defend free enterprise and free markets while getting to know them better. On August 4, 11 and 13, we will talk with York and Lancaster Senators and Representatives about issues important to local individuals and member businesses. Elections have consequences, and this one will be no different in that respect. No matter how much or how little you are able to contribute, please support these important events!

ABC PA is an organization consisting of all four of our Pennsylvania Chapters plus the Cumberland Valley, MD Chapter, which has member firms in PA. David Greineder, our Director of Government Affairs, is the lobbyist for ABC PA. David worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 shutdown period keeping members informed of the daily updates from the Department of Health and the Governor. ABC PA ensures we have one voice in Harrisburg, which ultimately carries more clout than four or five separate messages to our legislators. Other PA Chapters include Eastern, Central and Western.

ABC Keystone's Apprenticeship Graduation is just around the corner! As strange as it may feel to be holding this event in August, I am really looking forward to congratulating and celebrating the accomplishments of this year's graduating class. On August 13, ABC Keystone will recognize our Apprenticeship Class of 2020 and the Craft Professionals of the Year at the Chapter training facility in Manheim for a unique ceremony. Please consider joining in this celebration. The number of attendees will be limited to stay within COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. See abckeystone.org for more information.

In case you missed it, career development and safety training classes are back up and running at ABC Keystone. Take a look at the chapter website for a complete listing of education opportunities and sign up to keep your team up to date on the latest trends in our industry.

Other upcoming events include the Safety Awards Breakfast Presented by Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC on 9/15, the Clay Shoot presented by OSS Health on 9/24, The Outdoor Mixer Mashup presented by Barley Snyder and Saxton & Stump Lawyers and Consultants which will be held at John Wright on 10/6, and the Golf Outing presented by Harmon & Davies, P.C. at Iron Valley on 10/21. Mark your calendars and get your registrations in early as these events will fill quickly. Attendee numbers may need to be limited to accommodate for COVID-19 safety guidelines.

ABC Keystone is a member-driven organization and provides support, advocacy and training services. But the Keystone Chapter also continues to support the entire construction industry, through local, regional, and national channels. Check out the website for a complete listing of member services including affinity program discounts which can help you pay for your membership investment and then some.

In case you missed it, this is one awesome group of construction professionals!

Let’s get it done together!

Not stopping now,

Roger Brubaker2020 Chair of the Board

2020

lace yourself back in early 2020, and as May approached, members and staff were looking forward

to celebrating the time and efforts that had been expended by the students in our Apprenticeship program. Four years of theory and hands-on training and 8000 hours of on-the-job training was nearing completion. We couldn't wait to celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of the future of our industry!

Enter COVID-19. Unfortunately, we were forced to postpone our May graduation ceremony. As we watched the weeks pass by, it became apparent that our traditional way of celebrating could not take place this year. The team worked to come up with alternatives to provide a celebration that would give these hard-working students their due recognition. Due to changing regulations and venue limitations, it was a challenging task, and the team has landed on a solution.

We've worked to provide our graduates with recognition and will continue to do so:

Throughout the summer, we have been highlighting this year's class on social media. Please like and share these postings to help celebrate these apprentices.

This August issue of the Merit Shop Spokesman is being dedicated to our graduating class. As you look through this month's Merit Shop Spokesman, please take note of who these graduating apprentices are and of the variety of accomplishments that have been achieved.

And, YES, we are holding a graduation ceremony!

Thursday, August 13, has been established as the date for Graduation. The event will be held at the ABC Keystone training facility, outside and under the "big top." We will be limited to the number of people due to the current COVID-19 safety mandates in place and will be staggering attendance at the event by trade. However, we want these individuals to be

able to get the recognition they deserve, and this will allow them to have a ceremony while still staying safe.

An important inclusion in each year's traditional graduation ceremony is thanking and celebrating our apprentices that spent extra time to prepare and compete on behalf of their companies and ABC Keystone at the ABC National Craft Competition (NCC). This year's competition was to take place in Nashville during March. After the Convention was first postponed from Spring and then moved to August, the situation in Nashville required its complete cancellation. These individuals spent extra evenings and weekends preparing to represent ABC Keystone against the best of the best, and they deserve to be recognized. Join me in thanking Jarrad Fulgenzi, Bradley Gerberich, Sean Herr, Jeremy Spangler and Brandon Thomas for their work and dedication.

The Apprenticeship Class of 2020 will definitely remember their final year at ABC Keystone, including finishing their studies in a virtual environment and the upcoming socially-distanced graduation ceremony. While the year has been non-traditional, in true ABC Keystone tradition, this year's graduating class represents the best of the industry's skilled workforce.

Good luck to each and every graduate, and we look forward to following you on your journeys through this great industry we call Construction.

This issue of the Merit Shop Spokesman is dedicated to the Chapter's 2020 graduating apprentices in celebration of their many achievements. Congratulations!

Dear 2020 ABC Keystone Graduates,

Wow, what a way to end your apprenticeship! While the plans for your last apprenticeship year and graduation ceremony ended differently than what anyone had envisioned, I hope you know how proud ABC and I are of your accomplishments. Your commitment, dedication and hard work over the last several years has finally paid off. You, the ABC Keystone Apprenticeship Class of 2020, are the future leaders of the construction industry, and I know you all will do us proud. Use the knowledge and experience that you gained to achieve all you can in the industry and throughout all your endeavors. It truly is my honor to be part of ABC Keystone's Apprenticeship program, and it was my pleasure getting to meet each one of you.

Be proud of who you are, what you have done, and what you still will do!

Cynthia (Cindy) S. DeWire, ABC Keystone Director of Apprenticeship

Pipefitting Added to ABC Apprenticeship ProgramABC is excited to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Chapter's new Pipefitting Apprenticeship program. Starting in September 2020, Pipefitting curriculum will be added for members who want the choice of having a pipefitter registered with the Department of Labor & Industry.

Our team is planning combined classes for Levels/Years 1 and 2, and then students will separate into their specific trade classes for Levels/Years 3 and 4. ach year, ABC Keystone invites our top fourth-year apprentices to compete in the

Chapter's Annual Craft Competition. Five of these apprentices received top scores at this past year's event held Saturday, September 21, 2019, at the Chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades would have provided these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition which was to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville. Due to the onset of COVID-19, the Convention was ultimately cancelled following an initial rescheduling from March to August.

These five apprentices spent countless hours taking theory exams and honing their skills through hands-on skills training as they prepared for this event. The Chapter shares in their disappointment that the National Competition was unable to take place this year, but on behalf of the ABC Keystone Chapter members, we wish to extend our sincere thank you and congratulations to the 2020 NCC Team for their efforts and hard work. While they may not have had the chance to compete, they have earned their place as the future of the industry!
