Lakota Places Levy on Ballot -- First of Two Votes

The Lakota Board of Education took the first of two steps necessary to place a 7.9 mil Emergency levy onthe November ballot. The levy will raise approximately $21,750,000 per year for ten years for the dis-trict, and is estimated to cost approximately $231 per year per $100,000 home valuation (or$19.29 per month).

Lakota is facing an expected negative cash balance of $10 million in 2012, and the funding received fromthis levy w ill ensure that Lakota is able to maintain basic classroom instruction for the 18,500students who attend 22 Lakota schools. The Board will approve the second vote later this month tomeet the requirements for placing a levy on the ballot.

Since 2008, Lakota has cut $13 million from its daily operating budget in an ef fort to tightenits belt in these tough economic times. The reductions have included the elimination of over75 positions, changes to services such as transportation, and fee increases. Additionally, while workingto maintain the classroom, administrators are now splitting buildings in some cases as well as the educa-tional support staff across the district being significantly reduced. Student offerings such as athletics andextracurricular activities have also been reduced in an effort to remove dollars from the operatingbudget.

While a 7.9 mil levy will help us in maintaining our programs, unfortunately, in order to re-main solvent as required by the state, we w ill need to continue our reductions and removeeven more from our budget, remarked Superintendent Mike Taylor. We have already under-gone many painful rounds of budget reductions which is leading to the dismantling of the ex-cellent educational programs that this community has built over time, and I am not lookingforward to the continuation of this. Should this levy not pass, we w ill be forced to offer Lakotastudents state minimum education. He continued.

    Preparing a Will

Not enough people have prepared their will.

A fairly simple estate can turn into a complicated mess for heirs if someone passes withouta will, especially when there are minor children involved.

When a Court cannot look to you for direction, they look for the right path by using Statutes.Often, what the Statutes recommend is far different than what you would have preferred. Cana Statute say who is the right person to take care of your children?

The lack of a will can also lead to bitter fights between the heirs. When there is no clear di-rection, heirs are forced to raise the volume to be heard, and unfortunately the quietest heirsare probably the ones you want to have the most control. So its time to stop procrastinating. Get your will finished and marked off the things-to-dolist. You can prevent a lot of problems in the future with just a little effort today.

Call Nick Perrino at Prodigy Plus Title Agency to prepare your will.

Housing Myths Busted! Two e-mail chains are spreading misinformation about pending legislation, according to The NationalAssociation of Realtors. One claims that the energy bill thats working its way through Congress wouldrequire home sellers to obtain an energy audit or make energy retrofits before they can sell their home.In reality, the bill includes a provision that requires new construction to be energy labeled but prohib-its states from requiring new ratings when the house is resold. The second e-mail states that the health care bill contains a 4 percent transfer tax on home sales. Thetruth is that the bill imposes a 3.8 percent Medicare tax for some high income households that havenet investment income. The tax. Which goes into effect in 2013, applies only to households with adjusted gross income of morethan $250,000 ($200,000 for individuals). Also, since the capital gains exclusion rule is still in effect, thetax would be charge only on home-sale proceeds that exceed the exclusion amount of $500,00 ($250,000for individuals). Thats an amount that touches few households.By Erica Christopher and Robert FreedmanRealtor Magazine July/August 2010 Issue

Interim Pool Manager...Bob Bailey! Thanks to Bob Bailey for steppingin to lend a hand. We appreciate

that Bob is always willing to helpour homeowners association andfolks, we shouldnt take that forgranted. Most of us would like to help until well were asked to do so and thenwe realize the commitment of showing up and following through means time outof our schedule and believe me when I say it also means stress! Bob has been atrustee for many, many years and stepped down this last year and yet of course heis still called upon often and thankfully answers the calls as much as possible.

Did you receive the new edition of The Highlights? Sharon Mohan (seen below)is now the editor of the official Dutchland Woods newsletter. She gave us a lot of information about what is going on inour neighborhood and beyond and for the first time that I canrecall we had the scoop from the meeting minutes! I felt likeI was there at the meeting! There were also a list of the cur-rent board members and a list of phone numbers or con-tact information for each. Please consider keeping that so

that you can know how to reach a trustee when you need one. Great jobSharon!! Look forward to the next issue too!

So why are there two newsletters??? For some time prior to Sharon writing thisnew edition we didnt have anyone who was writing regular newsletters. When Ileft the board I didnt want the communication to stop so I chose to pay for thenewsletter myself and continue editing it. I love doing this and for now, well takea wait and see approach. I hope that youll welcome the news from both of us. We

both love our neighborhood and want you in-formed.Need to reach The White House? Want to in-quire about a rental? You can reach the secre-tary Vicki Bailey at [email protected] 8-12 M-F 779-2568
