LETTER FROM THE LTGHello Blue Turtles!

We are entering our last month for Summer Key, but that does not stop us from intensive service and fundraising! The division is having monthly services at the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House, so don't forget to sign up for the wonderful opportunity. We are getting closer to reaching our goal for Pediatric Trauma Program. Keep coming to those fundraisers and help your clubs reach their personal goals as well! And did I hear new division attire? Division 10 South has a new crewneck design for you to wear in the fall, so let's share some division spirit! As your Lieutenant Governor, I am extremely proud of all your accomplishments in the summer. Though the summer heat may make us lazy, Key Clubbers just never stop working! With this attitude, let's march into the new school year with enthusiasm to recruit new members! I hope to see each and every club increase its membership. Educate interested students in the importance of Key Club, and reach that membership growth for our division.

I am thankful to be able to serve you, and remember if you have any questions, I am just a message away. Love,

Kelly Lau,

NOTE FROM YOUR TECH EDITORHello Key Clubbers!

As summer comes to a close, and the school year begins anew, I would like to remind you all to continue participating in Key Club! Even though school is rough, and the hours short, I hope you all find some time to dedicate towards Key Club. Afterall, what fun is high school, if you don’t take the time off to enjoy it!

As you can see, this issue has certainly been vamped up since the last. Although it is still lacking in some regards, I am trying my best to make our newsletter one of the best! Please assist me by providing me with your photographs and articles. The more material I have to work with, the better.! You can send any of these to d10s.techeditor.gmail.com, by the 20th of every month. You don’t have to be an officer to help out-- please send me pictures of all these events, or direct me towards an individual who does take pictures!

Enjoy your last few weeks of summer!

With love,

Kelly Luc

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE elnora phuHey blue turtles! It’s Elnora, your Fundraising Committee Chair, again. So how exactly does this committee contribute to the division? Well, we organize and promote fundraisers for various projects, but our primary focus is the Pediatric Trauma Program. All proceeds from our division fundraisers go to PTP in order to raise awareness of pediatric trauma among children and to treat them. There are multitudes of ways you can contribute and one thing you can do is attend our division fundraisers! As of right now, we have raised about $900 and our goal is to reach $1500 by Fall Rally. We only have about 3 months left and I know we can raise MORE than that, but we need YOUR help! The fundraising committee, along with street team, has lots in store for you. We are in the process of creating a new crewneck design, organizing a hair bow fundraiser, hosting various restaurant fundraisers (101 Tea Lounge, Ten Ren’s Tea Time), and we are still brainstorming some division merchandise we can sell. I don’t know about you, but I’m PUMPED for the new school year! And to end this blurb.. don’t forget to attend our 101 Tea Lounge Fundraiser on Friday, July 27 and our Ten Ren fundraiser on Friday, August 10! See you all there!

OLDBUSINESSREGION 13 PICNIC

Page 11: AUGUST D10S NEWSLETTER

On July 23, Region 13 gathered at Butterfield Park to bond with one another and have fun. This was my first region social event. I was previously unable to attend region events such as the Region 13 Beach Cleanup, so I was very excited to have another opportunity.

At the picnic, I met a lot of new people, who I now talk to or text with on a daily basis, even now. I absolutely love events such as these, because we get to show our spirit, and meet people outside of our division.

Although Division 10 South did not make it to the last round of the Spirit Battle, I am confident that we can win the Spirit Stick during this year’s Fall Rally. With all the new cheers in the making,

On, June 16, 2012, Gabrielino High School’s Key Club volunteered at the 2012 Pasadena Chalk Festival. This event is held at the Paseo Colorado and is an event where thousands of spectators come to enjoy the festival that is open to the public. Spectators can enjoy artwork, which is drawn on the floor with pastels by artists. The venue also allows people to dine, shop, and listen to music at the same time. This festival is made possible by the Paseo Colorado and the Light Bringer Project.

Gabrielino Key Club members were expected to arrive by 7:00 am to help set up. The service was broken down into two shifts. The first shift was from 7:00 am to 1:30 pm. The second shift was from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Our members were given the choice to choose one of those shifts or to do both. For the first shift, we were given instruction by the woman in charge. Many of the members were split up in groups to go to different stations and do different tasks. Some tasks included registering the artists, distributing shirts, passing out refreshments, and making sure all the artists had enough chalk for their artwork.

During the second shift, members passed out flyers, helped the live band, and cleaned stations. Near the end, artists started covering their artwork with plastic coverings to prevent damage, so everyone helped clean up and signed out with the woman that was in charge. This service was enjoyable to the club overall. We got to do many different tasks, learn new things, meet new people, and help make the Chalk Festival a success!

PASADENA CHALK FESTIVAL

Page 13: AUGUST D10S NEWSLETTER

This year I had the honor of helping out at the Chalk Festival for the first time. Last year, I had the misfortune of being holed up at SAT Classes, but I finally got to attend.

The moment I arrived, the artists were already hard at work. As Saturday progressed, I saw just how talented and amazing these artists were. Despite the summer heat, they slaved away at their drawings, with the hopes and intentions of inspiring their viewers. On Saturday, I worked at the kid’s booth. The children who participated in the booth were excited to be an “artist,” and eagerly colored in the templates we provided. By the time they finished, they were practically covered in chalk dust!

I came back on Sunday to help out a second time at the Chalk Festival. This time, we got the opportunity to directly help the artists. We went around with a shopping cart with a bucket filled with drinks. We travelled around, and asked the weary artists whether or not they wanted a drink, and many were delighted by our offer and thanked us for taking the time to volunteer at the event. Every time we were thanked, I couldn’t help but smile, because it was so amazing to know we were the ones putting smiles on peoples’ faces. I think one of my favorite parts of the event was the free food that was given to everybody who attended. Starbucks provided free coffee for anybody who offered it, and one movie theatre gave free popcorn. It is nice to know that so many businesses in our community willingly help the community. Overall, the Pasadena Chalk Festival was a wonderful service to participate in.

D10S CARWASH

ICE SKATING SOCIAL

On June 30,2012, we had our Division 10 South Carwash from 12pm to 4pm, located behind the Carls Jr. in Rosemead. The carwashes were free but donations were accepted and all the proceeds were to go to the Pediatric Trauma Program. Some of the jobs included were washing, drying, and even promoting the carwash on the streets. Even though it was a hot and sunny day, many members came out to support PTP and some even brought their own cars and donated to the cause.

Special thanks goes out to the Street Team and the Fundraising Committee for bringing all the materials.

It was a busy day with many cars coming in to get washed. We had to ask the drivers to keep on moving forward because we were almost always running out of space. The washers hosed the cars and the dryers dried the car with either a towel or newspaper. Those promoting the carwash on the streets used posters and advertising to draw in customers. Overall, it turned out to be a fun and productive experience, giving

On Saturday, July 7, 2912, I went to the division ice skating fundraiser. It was a great experience because so many people came to support the division. I had so much fun, even though it’s not the first time I’ve ever went skating. The event was a well-planned great idea, especially since it allowed so many of us to escape the heat of sunny California. Members of our division were wonderfully helpful as usual, earnestly teaching the inexperienced how to ice skate. Our lieutenant governor, Kelly Lau, had her own personal lesson too! It wasn’t just ice skating, but the entire experience of ice skating with one another, conversing and assisting, that made the fundraiser such an enjoyable experience.

Ice skating gave us the chance to bond and have fun, all while raising funds for PTP. It is because of events like this that I am always excited to attend division events. I could tell that everyone I met, both old and new, enjoyed their time at the event because of all the smiles I saw throughout the fundraiser. Even when we fell, we blue turtles would get right back up and laugh as if nothing happened.

FAMILIA UNIDA

Page 15: AUGUST D10S NEWSLETTER

On June 29, 2012, Rosemead Key Club was invited back to volunteer and participate in Familia Unida’s monthly meeting, which takes place the last Friday of every month at the Garvey Community Center. These meetings hosted by Familia Unida aim to bring those living with multiple sclerosis together, along with their families, to partake in discussions for active social interaction. These discussions are driven by specific themes relating to the latest news.

Rosemead key club arrived at approximately 5 p.m. with 12 to 15 members at the center to help set up and organize the event room by displaying room décor and arranging the tables. As the meeting began, our members were asked to join the discussion circle for icebreakers, such as Hot Potato, and to share our thoughts on the late death of Rodney Glen King, who surprisingly has been an active contributor in Familia Unida. As the time approached 7 p.m, Rosemead key club promptly prepared and served the food for the participants as well as aiding them to their seats. After dinner, our members ended the night with cleaning the event room and dissembling the seating at around 10 p.m
